reading clean gene’s interview in the mid 1990s about the campaign is funny cuz he gets all mad about rfk jumping in and making the race about “other issues” when those other issues were mostly helping the poor and fighting racism

it’s also funny because you can clearly tell from the interview that ol gene never had a lick of personality to him. the interviewer just writes (???) multiple times in his sentences. truly our greatest near-president!

what follows is an insane general election, with hobby winning over “eisenhower democrats” in the south (SC, AR, and NC go republican), but the democrats, led by golden boy kennedy win more in the west and midwest (hello california), and still win, with kennedy choosing scoop jackson instead of lbj

anyway nixon gets all mopey and goes back to cali, just to sulk around and turn down various attempts to nominate him as president. he gets even more depressed when kennedy is assassinated by anti catholic wacko richard pavlick, which ushers in an era of chaos as scoop jackson calls for civil rights expansions and the far right goes hog wild

anyway scoop wins in 1964, with thomas dodd as his vice president, but gets gunned down by militiamen in 1967

dodd pretty much becomes an extreme authoritarian, starting the war on drugs early, arresting mlk utilizing the logan act, and utilizing the FBI to crush radical political opponents

he gets a solid win in 1968 (with sam yorty as his vice president/professional attack dog) but corruption and the dam breaking in 1971 get him thrown out

hilarity ensues during the short yorty administration, and he loses an insane 500 EV landslide to republican bob dole

dole is cool, but his death in 1974, along with the death of his vice president, the speaker, and the president pro tem cause his secretary of state, richard nixon, to enter power

this nixon is basically a mix of late-watergate nixon and the nixon the birchers thought they were getting in 64. his politics are more right wing, as he’s grown close with conservative groups, and operating out of a white house half decimated turns him even more paranoid

basically nixon becomes the nixon we all love to hate with mark felt keeping a reign on intelligence for him and the logan act being used for all kinds, even senators george mcgovern and john sparkman

by the end the opposition democrats are nearly crushed, but a small “mom and pop” campaign out of minnesota unseats the republican machine after nixon terms out

i think i’ve been on this tangent before but the word “fraud” has no sticking power anymore after having my brain melted by nba twitter. like what’s really separating future alternate-timeline-president ron desantis and twitter user @LeGoatWipesJorGamble when you really think about it.

the lia thomas story and more importantly the reaction to it is a very obvious (but successful) distraction from the actual atrocities committed by republican governments towards transgender people, but let’s see how far this sports grift can go. when andy ngo is speaking at the 2024 rnc thats post-ironically located in san francisco can we get him to say “Lia Fraudmas”?

The reason why Republicans are latching onto this issue (on top of blatant transphobia) is that parenting is the real sport in the suburbs. If Republicans can convince parents that Democrats will destroy their child’s athletic prospects, it’ll surely make up for Trump’s vulgarity.

We were watching a Fox News video about this where they attacked Lia Thomas for having gone through puberty as a male (from the same party that wants to make puberty blockers a felony) and advocated for “separate but equal” (deadass) sporting leagues. They had a vox populi too from some concerned parents, but the only people they could get were two Christians misgendering Lia Thomas while wearing shirts saying “Biological Women’s Lives Matter” or something.
