-basically Iran’s planned invasion of Bahrain if the coup by Shia terrorists backed by them was successful in 1996 becomes reality and Bubba is forced to declare war on Tehran.

-by Richard Clarke’s accounts, said tensions reached the boiling point in the last week of the Presidential Campaign, meaning the Dems get one hell of a boost, regaining both the House and the Senate and Newt (narrowly) loses his seat in a very proto Portillo Moment.

-due to the Dems dominating both Houses,Ken Starr’s “investigation” just stops and the Lewinsky Scandal becomes less important.

-Dubya decides not to run, leading to Keating becoming the establishment choice to stop McCain but losing slightly more states.

-Bradley wins a primary or two and Wellstone enters the race as an antiwar candidate, with a still massively victorious Gore being forced to name Shaheen as his VP to appease the left.

-9/11 doesn’t happen but the Talibans still run over Afganistan.

-the Crash still happens but is slightly less severe, affecting however Shaheen’s chances and leading to Huckabee riding to the White House on a wave of populism.

He only gets one term because come on,this is Huckabee we’re talking about but I don’t know who is Dem nominee who beats him in 2012. Obama just became in this TL Governor of Illinois two years ago and is relatively obscure,Hilldog and other female candidates are tainted by Shaheen’s loss and the rest of Gore’s Cabinet would have consisted by grey men who don’t want to be Prez. Especially people like Holbrooke,Holder or Summers.

So yeah,kinda stuck there.

Any ideas? @Time Enough @Walpurgisnacht

Basically Y2K happens but only in Italy,Romania,Turkey and one nuclear plant in Japan (like it did nearly happen) and this is the fallout.
Okay, I wonder how much we will be doomed.
I expect a straight-up military junta, with some very weak Prime Minister (maybe Cindoruk? He was always described as “all words, no actions” type of politician who seem to fear from authority and getting real responsibility, and also was called by some writer as the night watchman of the order)

@Time Enough @Walpurgisnacht

A idea that just came to me for a future project:

1953-1971 Nikita Khrushchev

1971-1989 Ivan Serov

1989-1992 Oleg Penkovsky

-basically the U2 spy affair doesn’t happen due to Gary Powers crashing by accident while testing and thus Ike and Nicky K’s planned arms treaty goes forwards and is successful, meaning an earlier Detente,no Berlin Wall,no Cuban Missile Crisis-maybe even Ulbricht gets ousted.
-Kozlov survives slightly longer enough to stop Brezhnev but not long enough to be Nicky’s succesor, making the Butcher of Katyn (who still remains in charge) the Khrushchevite continuity candidate by default who continues the consensus til the mid 1980’s,when things go south.

(incidentally,Jaruzelski mostly likely resigns because of this in protest and abandons being in the public eye)

-No U2 Spy Affair means Nicky K doesn’t become more aggressive which means Penkovsky doesn’t become a double agent and becomes Serov’s Gorby,as he attempts (and half succeeds) to dissolve the USSR peacefully as he sees the writing on the wall.

-the Cold War doesn’t quite end but it doesn’t really function that much-outside of a few places here and there, the Americans and the Soviets mostly cooperate with each other, especially on space related stuff.

-a main theme I wanted to center around this possible project is that of the main powers dealing more with rouge states and thus being forced to/accidentally work together to solve global issues at times.

A Soviet-Albanian war in ‘61,Trujillo wacking the Shah, surviving assassination attempts and forcing the USA to intervine militarily, Sukarno starting a war with the Brits-even a prequel of sorts about the May 1958 Coup attempt going forward due to De Gaulle having died in ‘44 and NATO being forced to intervine in France.

Not to mention China, who becomes Public Enemy Nr 1.
