Yokai Man’s Test Thread Thing

@Time Enough @AH Layard

Something I found it while reading biographies of Chamberlain was that Nev was incredibly paranoid at times and heavily depended on Major Joseph Ball,head of the Conservative Research Department,Deputy of the Security Executive and best known for playing a certain role in creating the Zinoviev Letter forgery.

It cannot be stated how much of a bastard Ball was. Fanatically loyal of Chamberlain,he viewed him as the savior of the nation and was willing to do anything to aid him. He created a whole newspaper with government money just to promote appeasement and bully Jewish people. He illegally financed the pro appeasement movement with numerous criminal schemes, many of which had the backing of Nev and involved people like Lloyd-George’s old pal Maundy Gregory and gold mining tycoon Sir Harry Oakes.

Both of which btw died because Ball always knew how to cover most of his tracks and arranged their murders.

Not to mention spying on all of Nev’s political rivals,not only bugging the phones of Churchill,Eden etc. but also having informants infiltrate their social circles and the Opposition/anti appeasement organizations in order to undermine them. By all intents and purposes,because of him Nev knew all of Labour and the Liberals’s plans and policies and the 1935 election was won in no small part because of espionage. The 1938 Oxford by-election was won by Hogg (without him knowing btw) only because Ball tricked the election at Chamberlain’s orders.

In a no WW2 world,Nev would still win the 1940 election because Ball would still be in power and thus able to know every thing the opposition does. In case of emergences,Ball had special files ready to be used as blackmail towards Nev’s rivals.

And note that he did this without MI5 or MI6 knowing or approving of this. By all intents and purposes he and Nev not only broke the law but committed treason repeatedly-especially with the Italians.

Here’s the real kicker though:

In a 1940 election won by the Tories,Nev still dies of cancer and Ball becomes a very awkward problem.

Especially if,distraught by his idol’s death,he doesn’t manage to eliminate some incriminating evidence at time and MI5,wanting to get revenge on him,gets the evidence and shows them to Hoare and the Cabinet.

None of which were previously told anything about this by Nev and would be aghast by Ball and Nev’s actions.

And knowing how naive Sammy was,I do believe this could end up a big scandal.

Neville Chamberlain and Joseph Ball as the 1930s British Nixon and Ehrlichman I guess.
They also bugged Baldwin’s phone since 1931 and,in case Stan refused at some point in time to give Nev the job,they planned to use his son Oliver and blackmail Baldwin into resigning or else they would expose Oliver’s sexuality to everyone and have him sent to death.

It cannot be stated just how much Nev was a bastard. The embodiment of a backstabbing snake,he believed in nothing and solely wanted power and wealth. He was an appeaser mostly due to pure opportunism and Ball was one because Nev was one. Left wing,right wing-Nev was willing to be whatever you wanted for a vote and a buck.

In a Clarke Wins in ‘97 Timeline,how would the Shadow Cabinet actually function,given his deal with Redwood?

And how long til Redwood turns on Ken?
Not sure, I would say that’s probably fairly equal in Wets and Dries. I could see Francis Maude gaining a prominent position as the Liberal but Fiscally Conservative figure.

I don’t see Redwood plunging the dagger, he will probably be seen as having betrayed the cause if he was working with Ken, I could see mumblings from figures like IDS or maybe Peter Lilley or some kind of Thatcherite lad.

Gosh, doubt they’ll be happy. Has there ever been a way for Romania to avoid the vast levels of corruption and incompetence that have plagued the nation.

@Time Enough @Walpurgisnacht

An idea came to me while reading old Academia Cațavencu articles from Internet Wayback but first,a bit of a background:

See,back in April 2008,PSD,PRM and PD-L in an act of pure electoral populism voted to rise teacher’s salaries by 50% because hey,elections are just months way,might as well bribe the electorate in other ways than literally.

The Tăriceanu government however postponed actually putting this into practice because,well *gestures at the 2008 Financial Crisis*,which launched massive protests by the unions controlled by PSD and PD-L and out of cowardice (as well as not wanting PSD to coup them,they needed their votes to remain in power),did a 180 and in September unanimously voted the same law months ago they and everyone else pointed out will cause massive hyperinflation like in the Nineties.

Also note that they did this on the same week Goldman Sachs went bankrupt.

Now,this didn't quite happen due to the few months delay from April to September and the PD-L-PSD coalition of 2009 changed the law a bit-the salary rises became technically legal but not now.

In fact,they specifically made so that said actual implementation of said law can be stalled as long as the government wants to-a common occurrence in Romanian politics.

Now the first PoD here is obvious-Tăriceanu and PNL don’t stall it and back it in April instead of September,maybe seeing the polls to close to their liking. Hyperinflation happens,worse recession,bigger austerity,that much is obvious.

The second one however is what I wanted to talk about:

See,Academia Cațavencu sued said MPs who voted for said law to the General Prosecutor’s Office on the basis of undermining the national economy,which is a crime and honestly they did have a case (they always did though,the OG Academia Catavencu pre split was good at investigating crime)-so much so that the General Prosecutor approved of starting a criminal investigation and latter trial,but was then closed because the law regarding 50% salary rises was never really implemented.

In the TL where it’s implemented in April,the trial can happened and the 326 MPs who voted yes can easily lose the trial and get prison sentences from 5 to 20 years of jail-the punishment for undermining the national economy according to the penal code.
