I do feel like doing it out of order misses out on part of the fun, which is trying to work out the implications of all the previous choices in picking the next leader. Doing it out of order also constrains other players as they have to fit in with the eventual vision of previous entrants.

I understand that, but I feel that sometimes there’s more fun in trying to fill in the blanks than going from scratch - plus just in past experience doing these things people have a tendency to try and sidetrack these lists and shoehorn their own over-the-top ideas without much consideration to other contributors or an overarching story, whereas doing it out of order sort of limits that.
