Shine Like A Starlight: Haiti (Misc. Lore) - Gonâve
slas logo header.png
1692927058880.png
The Most Prudent Republic of Gonâve is one of the many constituent republics of the United League and Covenant of the Americas. It is one of the republics ran by a minority elite, namely the White Gonâveans [primarily made out of French and Anglo-Latin populace], over a primarily Taino populace. It is a noted free state, with slavery being abolished in the 1960s in a move that deeply disgruntled the French of Saint-Domingue.

Now as the Imperium fractures, Gonâve is the most vulnerable of the republics of the League, as all of the insurgent forces in Saint-Domingue [all calling themselves Haiti] seeks designs on Gonâve as 'rightful Haitian land'.

Barry Domville, 1st Earl Domville (British Unity military-led government) 1949-1951
Bernard Montgomery (Independent-led 'transitional executive') 1951-1953
Jessica Mitford (Socialist Labour majority) 1953-

1953 [maj.]: def. Harold Macmillan (New Democratic), Anthony Benn (Progressive), R. Palme Dutt (Communist)

The Prime Minister comes from a very complicated family, with a brother and two sisters eagerly supporting fascism and two becoming collaborators [the third shot herself as the war started], and even as she assumes office in Blenheim Palace [the Nazis bombed Downing Street in retaliation as they retreated], many still associate 'Mitford' with the names Tom and Diana, even as they all know Decca is far away from them.

Truth be told, she doesn't even recall how she was made Prime Minister. Montgomery just fell deeply ill, Denis Healey was missing, Tony Benn was faffing around with his own 'Independent Liberal Party' (later the Progressives), Anthony Eden was high on drugs all the time and Harold Macmillan, well, nobody trusted Harold Macmillan. Not even the man himself. And Monty would rather run the entire show from his sickbed than allow Dutt to take over. And way too much labour union leaders were either dead or had tainted hands. So it was her by default.

The main question so rudely thrust upon her, which Montgomery refused to deal with until an elected Parliament, was that of the King. George, he of blessed and tragic memory, elected to send his family to safety in Canada. Unfortunately their voyage was interrupted by an U-Boat. The King spent the rest of his reign a husk and died in 1947 as a broken man. Edward would return to the throne under Nazi occupation for nine years. As the Resistance rose up and the Americans landed, he fled with the Nazi occupation authority, announcing his rudely-abrupt abdication.

The man named as his heir was the 'Unknown Royal' [a snarky play on his brother calling him the 'Unknown Soldier' in his abdication speech], Henry the Duke of Gloucester. His coronation as Henry IX was rushed and brief with the entrance into the Abbey to crown on head being less than twenty minutes due to the insistence of the Earl Domville keen on shoring up royal legitimacy.

Henry IX would find his next two Prime Ministers both loath to shore up his legitimacy, with Montgomery being disinterested in royalty who didn't fight against the Nazis, and then there was Decca. She sipped her tea as Britain's first openly republican head of government in 300 years.

At their family manor of Mitford Hall, Jessica Mitford brushes away her sister Deborah and her attempts to persuade her to keep 'good old Henry' on, or at least "don't rock the boat so much". She just dismisses her sister with a wave of her hand - "I will decide on my own, Debo."

That ended the argument.

Gender: Female
Year of Birth (Age): '958 CRC / 1 BFE (19 years old)
Home System: Chalacta (birth) / Nouane, Alsakan and Mikkia (adoptive) / Coruscant (residence)
Political Affiliation: Amidalist, with Reformist sympathies
Force Sensitive: Yes
Relationship and Family Status:
- Father:
Specton Mualegrea (deceased)
- Mothers: Zuji'af Sumijah, Auphi Acio-Siadro, Kaaké Lóóv and Linmela Corbark (third and fourth deceased)
- Sister: Thei Case (twin)
- "Relatives": Padmé Amidala (aunt), Anakin Skywalker (uncle), Luke and Leia Amidala-Skywalker (cousins), etcetera.
- Family Status: Imperial
Personality:
Slightly introverted with a (manageable) anxiety problem, can hold herself well in a debate and knows how to defend herself competently in a lightsaber fight, but is more at home being a bureaucrat. Extremely familiar with Force bullshit, has a mental link with her sister.

List of Positions Held:
- Force Academy Student (9-16 AFE)
- Fellow in the Imperial Corps (16 AFE)
- Journeyman in the Imperial Corps (16-18 AFE)
- Prior in the Imperial Corps (18 AFE-present)

Bio: TBD
The Empress:
Close: I know the Empress well. She might not be perfect, but she's a brilliant woman and I cannot imagine anyone else in charge. Only take this stance if your character has a personal connection to the Empress.

The Great Purge:
Supportive:
Tarkin's band of racist thugs had to go, and who realised how deep the rot ran? It was a worthy cause, and perhaps the work isn't yet done.

Structure of Government:
Authoritarian Democrat:
Ultimately, the people need some kind of voice, as a release valve of pressure if nothing else, but naturally we cannot trust their opinions. The Grand Vizier should be an elected figure, indirectly through a liberalised Senate, but their influence must be tempered by the Empress and other apolitical forces. Balance is key.

Economics:
Dirigiste:
It is clear that tripartism is beginning to strangle economic growth. The state should be given more power to direct and plan the economy, so that we can truly invest in the future, unions and businesses be damned.

Xenophobia and Social Views:
Genuine Xenophilie:
The galaxy is huge, diverse and multicultural. It is our duty as those in charge of it to protect and encourage that diversity. No one species is naturally better than another after all.

Imperial Succession:
Legitimist: Well, the Empire was founded on the ruler being chosen by the Senate and the people. Whichever one of them is supported, and thus has legitimacy, should be the Heir.

The Imperial Order and The Force:
Force Sensitive: The Force is what gives me my power, of course I champion it! Even if it is slightly strange, the Empress' interest is a good thing, because it means she understands our power. [Force Sensitive Only]

Dealing with the Rebellion:

Bread and Circuses: The Rebellion is not a war, but a symptom of the Empire having its focuses in the wrong place. If we are to beat them, then we must appeal to hearts and minds. Focus the economy on unprecedented development and social welfare programmes, and show the people that only the Empire can provide. The Rebels will dry up after that.

Abortion
Far-left: Complete bodily autonomy for pregnant people. Abortion up to, and including birth should be permitted.

Agriculture:
Left: Restore all subsidies for worker and small business agriculture

Asset Sales:

Far-left: We need to completely abolish the current system of financial capital and reform it to a people-centered system.
Right: The state should have a minimal role in the banking system

Crime - first is personal preference, second is what he says for political purposes
Far-left: The idea of crime is a colonial capitalist myth. Abolish capitalism and abolish the police.
Center-left: Invest in more police and rehabilitation, with a slight emphasis on rehabilitation.

Education - His *real* view is "Education should be controlled by communities, not the state or capitalists"
Left: ALL education should be free, but keep private education without subsidies.

Healthcare:
Center-left: Abolish the crown health enterprises, and move to the District Health Board system.

Unemployment - ahahahaha [more seriously, he probably mouths something like Centre-Right if asked in public]
Far-left: Abolish capitalism = abolish unemployment.
Far-right: Unemployment is the consequence of government involvement. Abolish all labour laws and government regulation to encourage work.

The Waitangi Tribunal Settlement Process:

Gender: Female
Date of Birth/Age: 14 August 1979 (29 years old)
Ethnicity: Russian
Religion: Atheist
Home Federal Subject: St. Petersburg
Party Affiliation: People's Solidarity Coalition "Roza" / Union of the Democratic Left
Member of the St. Petersburg City Council (2002-2005)

Natalia Tarkovskaya. One of the SDL’s ‘Bright Young Things’, being only 29 years old. A very quiet individual, with eyes perpetually flickering around the scene and a sharp mouth ready to throw barbs at anyone who displeases her. A hard worker when presented with tasks to do, she has been one of the people who the SDL whips has found indispensable, although she finds people, as individuals, very tiresome.

When giving a speech, as she is often reluctant to do, she digs deep in herself and at times loses herself to her own speech. It’s a form of controlled wildness, where this woman who normally holds her emotions to herself lets it all out in a very unique way. When she gets passionate about something, you’ll be dragged along for the ride. There’s people who currently have very strong views about the colour of Piter buses due to one of her speeches veering into that subject.

She doesn’t often have people close to her. Even her two sisters – Alexandra and Yekaterina – doesn’t quite understand her, but perhaps that’s more because they’re a decade older than her and she was her parents’ unexpected third daughter when they were approaching middle age. Still, Sasha and Katya tries sometimes to be good sisters to their incomprehensible sibling.

When she sits at her desk late at night after a long day, she just closes her eyes and shuts out everything in the world. In those stolen moments, she enjoys that rarest of things – peace.
Government Spending (Russia finds itself at a crossroads, as increased privatization and the need for pension reform has brought into question just how expansive the Russian state should be, and how to pay for it.)
A Leftist believes in a state with both high spending and high taxation, inspired by the Nordic model, and with a focus on taxing the wealthy.

Democracy (Russian democracy has been frequently turbulent, with street action common and only one Parliament not being pushed into a snap election. How does your character view Russian democracy?)
A Democrat is someone who believes in the value of liberal democracy. They believe that the popular will must be respected, but also tempered by respect for human rights and freedoms.

Balance of Powers (While the constitution envisioned a parliamentary republic, inaugural President Scriabin significantly strengthened both the power and prestige of the office, and at the moment Russia operates under a de facto semi-presidential system.)
A Parliamentarian supports the legislature and believes that more power should be given to them and the Prime Minister, including greater control over the security apparatus and foreign policy.

Gun Control (Russia’s americophilic youth continue to agitate for more liberal gun laws.)
A Liberal views gun rights as a convenient way of pandering to the youth vote, and backs some form of legal liberalization, although they usually stop short of supporting an outright amendment.

Incarceration
A Pragmatist is fine with prison sentences, but acknowledges that the current mass incarceration system is not sustainable and that alternatives must be found.

Homosexuality
A Reformist is opposed to homosexuality, but believes that a consistent human rights policy includes greater freedoms for the LGBT community, mainly related to self-expression and the discussion of their experiences. May support civil unions.

Foreign Policy
A Nationalist loves Russia, and believes it’s a country worthy of power and deference. However, they also view isolation as a negative and work to foster bilateral alliances with other countries, particularly India.

Corruption and the Oligarchs (The oligarchs continue growing in power and influence, despite the vast array of state organs arrayed against them.)
Someone who is Anti-Corruption supports the anti-corruption crackdown as it currently stands, but views further expansion as unnecessary zealotry, and may support pairing back some of the paramilitary elements of the anti-corruption campaign.

This Sceptred Isle: Niran Areh
Neville_Chamberlain_by_William_Orpen_-_1929.jpg

Neville Chamberlain
Name: Niran Areh
Gender: Male
Nationality: Kemean
Date of Birth: 14 April 1839 (56 years old)
Profession: Politician, Reformer, Noble, Conservative, possible Chief Minister or Vizier [possibly both to solve the constitutional question]
Faction: Conservative
Aims:

  • The Security of Keme: It is transparently clear to Areh that the war was a mistake. While of course he would praise the soldiers and call for a Remembrance Day for the fallen, he will seek to avoid a second war that will destroy Keme. His policy, 'reserve, but proud reserve', will seek to extract Keme out of any entangling alliances. Keme's interest is solely mercantile and securing trade from countries, not pointless wars that only undermine Kemean society.
  • The Winds of Change: Areh is not blind. He knows which way the wind is blowing, and he has read extensively of the Iberian situation. While Keme is no Iberia, he knows that eventually the masses of Keme will demand reform, and that the veterans will have ambitions. Therefore he will propose a major constitutional reform in Keme, establishing the Divan permanently and even granting a form of suffrage if pressured. However, he will not be a Kemeanist in this, no, he will seek to ensure the high court's interest is preserved and that the monarch still enjoys his own. It will be a limited reform. His own position will be clarified as he will seek to merge the positions of Vizier and Chief Minister into one clear executive position, even if he refuses to clarify on if it is ultimately answerable to the Diwan or the King. In classic Arehian manner, he says 'six of one, half a dozen of the other, Bryten didn't clarify, why should we'.
  • The Historic Compromise: To be a Conservative is not to be a Monarchist. While Areh will sing the praise of the old and wise King (and his young and wise son the Prince) every day, he is not a reactionary that thinks any change is inimical. In this new era, one touched by shudder people-rule, the state has new expectations. For one, the troops deserve some sort of pension for fighting in that ultimately doomed war. That Areh will ensure Keme gets. The state will step into the economy in a limited manner - more limited than Areh would prefer - to ensure that the rural and urban peasantry gets some form of limited support. Perhaps a workplace compensation scheme and an old-age pension system. It is not a socialist or Kemeanist policy, it is a policy to maintain social stability.
  • The Kemean Identity: This is not quite an Aim in itself, but Areh has a very Europeanist stance, but his view of Keme is a bit more nuanced - "In the heart of every Kemean resides the urge to be a Westerner with dreams, ambition and progressive thinking. Unfortunately for our people, lurking in its shadow is its rival, the urge to be of the East, a despotic hedonist with nary a care but pleasure, hollow tradition and cruelty. This is the struggle of every Kemean, for we are a people of two natures, not one. To achieve the perfect society, we must seek to reject the urge to reduce us to nothing."
Unique trait(s): Lives a very austere lifestyle, deeply loathing the idea of any 'hedonism'. If you visit him, you will be served dry crackers, even if with serviceable wine. Very keen on exercise and on 'bodily perfection', he boxed in his youth and still can pack a mighty punch if anyone tries to lay hands on him.
Background: It was never supposed to come to this. Niran Areh was supposed to be the spare, with his elder brother Tadros being the heir to the family legacy. So while Tadros was doing his own thing, Niran sought to establish connections. He knew he would not get far in life relying on the House of Areh’s boon. He wanted to be his own man and saw hard work as the path forward for him.

Through lots of toil and sweat, he did, and ended up a respectable businessman who knew people from all levels of society. He prided himself on being a man who shook hands with all castes, as long as they could do exchange with him. ‘Any man of golden character can be born high or low’. Of course, don’t ask him about his ‘little’ start-up loan he got from his apa and maw…

Still, one can admit that apart from that, he did come across his success honestly. By the time he was 30, he was regularly making a little tidy profit in the mercantile world of Keme. Then he was told of his brother’s sudden death of an opium overdose. Tadros was always far lazier than Niran, and far too many times did the younger brother envy the elder. Still, as he entered his elder brother’s abode, he saw what he would later regard as ‘decadence’. Drug smoke everywhere, clothes laid around absent-mindedly, and a clear disregard for his duties to the family.

His elder brother had a young wife from a respectable family, Ỉrỉs, who Niran met soon after, and agreed to marry to continue their familial alliance. He never had much love for her, but they grew to have a very amicable understanding, bolstered by their first child, a daughter named Mariam. Perhaps Niran just wasn’t the sort of person to feel much romance, so dedicated was he to his work. Ỉrỉs would look after Mariam and their other children, and he would deliver the profit and keep them all comfortable as both a successful businessman and the new heir to the House of Areh. He could trust her to keep her dalliances discreet, for he couldn’t provide in that dimension after all.

Leveraging his pull as a businessman and noble, especially when he became the family head at the age of 43 once his father died, into a position of relative influence, he sought to apply what he learnt at the ‘hard school of life’ to his politics. The supreme act was work. To apply oneself wholeheartedly to an endeavour was heavenly, even Godly. The worst sin was to be decadent and a wastrel, like his older brother was before his untimely death. While he allows Ỉrỉs her pleasures, he lives a very austere lifestyle. Someone once cruelly remarked that “the Arehs are a perfect pair – Ỉrỉs eats everything in the stew, Niran drinks the stew itself.” It is quite clear that on all matters monetary when the husband has to spend to spread influence, he hands the purse (albeit reluctantly) to the wife. This has resulted in the austere Niran being known as a host of extravagant parties.

Now at the age of fifty-six, Niran Areh stands tall with greying hair. His business is doing well. Not great, not terrible, just well. His wife is at his side, wishing for his success, even if there’s still not a spark of love there. His daughter is a spirited twenty-something woman who has ‘unorthodox’ ideas, and his other children, well, they’re his legacy as well, aren’t they? But his main priority remains first and foremost his country. As he sits with the Prince, they discuss the future…
Other Details: His wife has discrete affairs with other noblemen and he sometimes uses it as leverage over them if utterly necessary.

THE MANY FACES OF AUPHI ACIO-SIADRO
10: The Immortal Chancellor, 180 N.R.C.

The Chancellor of the New Galactic Republic closed her eyes. She was not always a quiet meditator, one to consider her words carefully before uttering them. Once, in her most recent youth, she was an arrogant fledgling believing that she had every right to rule. All of that is now over, and her edges have been smoothed, especially as she was humbled and then realised what she truly was. People were starting to talk, she realised. Not just about her, but about what she represented.

She remembered, vaguely, what she was in the past and what they thought of her duty, her destiny. Confusion. Doubt. Fear. She felt very little of it now, her adjustment process was far easier this time around. What does it mean to get used to the infinite? Did it make her just that less bit mortal?

She was wearing her fine robes, befitting of a Chancellor, as she approached the spaceship. It was to take her to a planet she had been before, but a long time before. She wondered if she would be recognised. Not as the Chancellor, no. Not as Feres Sadit Ky. As herself. Waving her talon, she dismissed the aide with “In an hour, bring me a drink, but leave me alone for the duration”.

She sat in the comfortable chair, and began to think. Think like she never had before. This trip was unusual, as it forced her to think more about the reality she was now in. The burden of not being mortal. To a mere mortal, immortality sounds great. But to an immortal, it is both a blessing and a curse. Especially her way of immortality. Sighing, she recalled all the people she grew up around, all her four lives so far, and how she lost all of them. She tried to reconnect one time, but it just never worked. An immortal’s life is defined by moving on, perpetually.

Sure, she could easily reduce the pain by cutting all connections out of her life, but that was not a happy path. Merely a ‘safe’ one, and hardly safe at all since it would cut allies out of her life. She was a woman with a destiny, and such destinies rely on strong allies. She idly pondered on if the one she would talk to would be an ally. Perhaps if it came with a pledge of not tampering with the Force. She knew full well how the action affected the Force, she remembered experiencing it as her first self and felt the anger of the Force upon it impressing on her her new responsibilities.

She brought out her red yo-yo. She was extremely skilled at making it go anywhere just with a flick of her claws. It gave her some peace when her mind was hounding her. Red was a colour she loved. The ball, the disc, the baton, the yo-yo, it was something that never quite changed, that every one of her selves had a trusty red toy. The yo-yo flew up in the air before being yanked back by the indestructible rope. She held it tenderly before putting it in her pocket – she always insisted all her robes had pockets – before the door opened. An aide brought in a bottle for her to drink, and she thanked them.

It wasn’t long yet, so she put the bottle in her beak and turned her head upwards. They really should get around to making drinks suited for people with beaks, she always thinks. Still, the cold, fizzy, sensation going down her throat gave her a pep in her step that she very much needed. Especially to such a destination as the planet she was headed towards.

The ship landed at a well-used port. This planet was very popular still, even in republican days. The allure of letting go is one for all seasons – whether imperial winter or republican summer – after all. She privately disliked it. Lots of her fellow Senators loved it, but she could taste the darkness, and so stayed away. This was not a place of honour, she deemed. Still, she had her duties as the new Chancellor, so she had to do the obligatory visit every Chancellor does. It was something arranged as part of a deal between the former Grand Moff and the New Republic, and every Chancellor followed it. She was not one to shirk her duties. Even when it became painful.

Exiting the ship, she saw a cruiser door open. “Take me to your leader” she said, and the staffers waiting for her bowed in obeisance as she got into the cruiser. She took a long, hard look at this planet. She knew what happened to it, in intimate detail. Still, she could admit that the planet has its own kind of beauty. One even she could admire, in a certain twisted kind of way. When the cruiser stopped outside the palace, she stepped out, and noticed no one was there. She knew the Grand Moff did not wait for the Chancellor. It was some kind of power play. Chuckling, she gestured with a friendly talon for the staffer to take her to the one she came to meet.

Not before long, they reached a door and she prevented the staffer from opening the door. “I will introduce myself” she uttered with a sweet honeyed tone she practised for so long. People were putty when she spoke like she was a bee’s masterpiece. She gently opened the door and walked in. She recognised the Grand Moff at once. A face she saw before, but oh, a long long time ago.

The Grand Moff’s bald head turned up, and the Chancellor’s eyes sparkled in mirth.

“It has been a long time hasn’t it, Ishtar?”
