The 2040 United States presidential election was the 63rd quadrennial presidential election, held on November 6th, 2040. The Democratic ticket of Rose Maddox, the junior Senator for California, and Davon Reid, the governor of Mississippi, defeated the New Democrat Coalition ticket of Michael Hunter, the senior Senator for Connecticut, and Ellen Hayakawa, the representative for Washington's 10th congressional district; the Unionist ticket of Lydia Bondarenko, the junior Senator for Ohio, and William Christensen, the Mayor of Salt Lake County; and the Democratic Socialists of America ticket of Antonio de la Rosa, the junior Senator for Hawai'i, and Aisha Russell, the Brooklyn Borough President. Maddox became the first non-binary person elected President, the youngest person elected President (at 41 years, 356 days), as well as being only the fourth sitting United States senator elected president, joining Warren G. Harding, John F. Kennedy, and Barack Obama. This was the first Presidential election in which the two highest popular vote totals went to members of the same political party, the last election in which the Unionist Party won any states, and the last election in which Patriotic Front officers and officials were barred from electoral participation under the Electoral Qualifications Act of 2032.

Incumbent Democratic President Charlotte Conneh was ineligible to pursue a third term due to the term limits established by the 22nd Amendment. Senator Maddox secured the nomination by November 2039 despite vehement opposition, defeating Governors Christopher Simon and Patricia Mendez in the primaries. In response to their success, a group of Democratic elected officials associated with the center-right New Democrat Coalition announced their intent to run an independent campaign that same month; though Governor Paris Stanford initially planned to make the campaign, she announced her retirement in January due to a diagnosis of leukemia, and Senator Hunter was nominated in her stead. Additionally, Senator de la Rosa announced his own independent campaign, and narrowly defeated Maddox for the DSA's national endorsement in February 2040, though many local chapters endorsed Maddox or refused to endorse either candidate. The Unionist primaries were marked by a close race between Senator Bondarenko, State Senator Joaquin Duarte, and Governor Andrew Cowan; Bondarenko won a narrow victory at the national convention in June 2040, in part by making a deal with Gov. Cowan and naming his protegé running mate.

The campaign focused largely on domestic policy. Maddox supported significant cuts to military, police, and surveillance funding, as well as sweeping legislation to protect Americans' privacy rights and end wartime restrictions on the Internet. They also endorsed the phased deregulation of price and wage controls, the devolution of the National Infrastructure Administration to state and local control, and the end of "special status" for national-scale unions and corporations. Hunter, conversely, supported the expansion of the NIA to cover geoengineering projects and long-term administration of social housing, renewed efforts to suppress third-wave 'amphibious' militias, and investment in Meristic Intelligence; on foreign policy, he supported expanding the Inter-American Development Program. Bondarenko and her party supported the repeal of the Emergency National Labor Relations Act of 2028, promotion of the nuclear family in education and housing, a legal right to private or parochial education, and American membership in the Global Democratic League, a precursor to the Ayodhya Agreements. De La Rosa supported Maddox' demilitarization plan but broke with them on economic planning and support for national-scale unions.

Maddox won a decisive victory in the Electoral College and a plurality of the popular vote, with key support bases in the Southwest, lowland South, and Midwest; their victory was assured by vote-splitting in key states such as Texas, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, though they won outright majorities in only four states (Alabama, Minnesota, Mississippi, and New Mexico). Hunter was able to win states such as New York, Virginia, Washington, and Tennessee through strong margins with white-collar voters and vote-splitting between Maddox and de la Rosa, but was unable to prevent socially conservative and military voters from falling behind Bondarenko.

This election was key in developing the Seventh Party System and crystallizing divisions within the postwar Democratic Party.

Rwanda Appeal Decision was a judgement by the Lords of Appeal in Ordinary (Law Lords) in 1924. This decision confirmed that the plan by the Colonial Secretary, Leo Amery, to take over the administration of Rwanda, the northern part of Rwanda-Urundi and place it under the governor of Tanganyika was legally impossible, despite the agreement of Prince-Regent Karel of Belgium, as Rwanda was a trust territory under the League of Nations and the trusteeship could not be altered by a trustee alone.

Amery had wanted to include Rwanda in a future East African Dominion, a white-ruled self-governing entity under the British crown that he sought to create from Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika. He saw Rwanda as "ideally suited to white settlement, having a similar climate to the Kenyan highlands," and had convinced Prince-Regent Karel of the plan with a promise for settlement grants for Belgian farmers. Amery had continued to push forward his dominion plans, despite the opposition of the Permanent Mandates Commission, and did not consult the Commission on Rwanda.

After the appeal decision, Prime Minister Baldwin demanded (and received) Amery's resignation, reputedly commenting that "even a childlike udnerstanding of law could have avoided this".

The Kingdom of Finland

Finland, officially the Kingdom of Finland, is a Nordic country in Northern Europe. It is a constitutional monarchy and has a population of 5.6 million. Helsinki is the capital and largest city. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Finland declared its independence from Russia and became a sovereign monarchy under Fredrik Kaarle (Friedrich Karl, Prince of Hesse). It is a founding member of the Kontinentalpakt and, as of 2002, the Euromark Area. The current head of state is King Heikki, while the head of government is Chancellor Jaana Koponen of the People's Party (Kansanpuolue).

In addition to its own military forces, Finland is host to the Finnish Sea Squadron (home port Hanko) and 1st Pomeranian Jäger Brigade of the Imperial German Military, as well as rotating army, navy and air force units of the Kontinetalpakt's Operation Polarlicht.

From Separated by a Common Language: A Guide to American Slang and Culture (published 1991):

"We've already discussed how Americans will be very confused if you call cigarettes fags, but you should also be prepared to be confused at American slang regarding tobacco. You see, in America they don't "smoke tobacco" they "drink tobacco." Many a visitor from the UK has been to an American restaurant and elicited guffaws at their confusion around the drinking and non-drinking sections. The term "drinking tobacco" actually predates "smoking tobacco" by several hundred years, with the term drinking being popular when tobacco was first introduced to Britain in the 16th century and smoking only emerging in the late 18th. The term "smoking" simply never took off in America, presumably a result of the same pigheadedness that has prevented them from adopting other common ideas like the metric system or universal healthcare."

Central Europe Treaty Organisation: 1946 - 1967

Formed in the aftermath of the inconclusive 2nd Polish-Soviet War, the Central Treaty Organisation (CETO) was a collective security organisation which stated focus was the containment of Soviet influence in Eastern and Central Europe. First proposed by the Republic of Germany, its founder members were Germany, the Kingdom of Italy and Czechoslovakia.

While purportedly focused on the Soviet threat to Europe its secondary purpose was to provide a bulwark against aggression from the Western European states, and to protect the German and Italian spheres of influence in Europe.

Its members were:

Member statesDate of membership
Germany1946 - 1967
Kingdom of Italy1946 - 1967
Czechoslovakia1946 - 1967
Kingdom of Hungary1948 - 1967
Western Polish Republic1948 - 1958
Federal Republic of Austria1950 - 1967

The organisation was was headed by a Secretary General that was appointed to a four year term by the Council of Ministers, made up of a representative of each member state. The list of Secretary Generals were:

1946 - 1950: Franz Von Papen (Germany)
1950 - 1954: Jan Syrovy (Czechoslovakia)
1954 - 1957: Guido Schmidt (Austria)
1957 - 1958: Council of Ministers collective leadership
1958 - 1962: Augusto De Marsanich (Kingdom of Italy)
1962 - 1966: Eduard Brücklmeier (Germany)
1966 - 1967: Lujo Tončić-Sorinj (Austria)

CETO was an unstable alliance with frequent clashes between German and Italian Ministers over influence and interference with the smaller member states and observers states such as Yugoslavia and Romania. This was not aided by the ideological incoherence of its members with the more democratic states such as Czechoslovakia butting heads with more authoritarian regimes.

Matters would come to a head during the Hot Summer of 1967 and the collapse of the Federal Republic of Austria during the Student Revolution, precipitating the Austrian Crisis during which Italy prepared to move troops into Austria to ostensibly save Vienna from "naked German aggression". A wider regional war was only averted by Atlantic Alliance diplomacy and a large military build-up at the border of Germany and the Polish SSR.

No WW2 or something since Eduard Brücklmeier survived and the original Czechoslovakian state survies, Poland divided, fascinating
Yep, no Nazi takeover of Germany, probably a DNVP dominated Authoritarian Democracy. Still working within the post Great War international order more and less and a more aggressive Soviet Union focuses minds, at least for a couple of decades.

Keir's Deers (alternatively, Keir's Dears) was a term used to refer to new Labour MPs elected at the 2024 general election from historically Conservative "Blue Wall" seats. They were referred to as "deers" due to being compared to "deer in the headlights" when their victories were announced at the counts. Approximately 48 (or up to 52, depending on the source) MPs were elected in seats which they did not expect to win, but were carried over by the national landslide in which Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer became Prime Minister. An alternative subset of new MPs who were women, including those elected in other seats outside the Blue Wall, were referred to as the "Dears" as a direct callback to the "Blair Babes" elected in 1997. The latter usage was scorned as a sexist remark. Many of the Deers were defeated in the 2029 election as the Conservatives won back the seats. The phrase was revived in 2055 when the Labour Party under Prime Minister Keir Mather selected very young candidates for seats across the nation. Although the Labour Party only won a plurality of seats in that election, the turnover from veteran MPs to the new generation of Keir's Deers marked a turning point in the makeup of the Commons. The Deers of the 50s would go on to dominate the Labour Party and Westminster in general over the following decades.

The 2076 United States presidential election was the 74th quadrennial presidential election, held on November 5th, 2076. The Democratic ticket of Tahaerys Gould, junior Senator for Columbia, and Dalia Ayala, Mayor of Chicago, defeated the Republican ticket of incumbent President Grace Wong and Vice President Mitchell Jackson. Gould became the first Jewish woman, first LGBTQ woman, and the youngest person to be elected President of the United States. Wong's Presidency was marked by a series of unpopular decisions, notably including immigration. Attempts at passing "Islamophilic" legislation (including a reversal of Davenport-era burqa bans) were met with massive popular resistance from many on the left, including Gould. Following massive victories in the 2074 midterm elections, the Democrats proposed an extremely ambitious platform. This included the total nationalization of the healthcare sector, a loosening of Torres-era gun laws, and more focus on foreign policy. Other major issues throughout the campaign included climate change (specifically concerning the adoption of fusion energy), education, and other social policy. Come election day, Gould would comfortably win by a margin of nearly 10%, well above the margin needed for a runoff. She would be sworn in on January 20th, 2077.

US finally has a twentieth century electoral system! And is getting a twentieth century health system! But dropping back into Islamophobia.

Also the first Targaryen, going by her first name.

Yeah, I like experimenting with different left-right overton windows. It goes without saying that I fully condemn Islamophobia.

Yep. I was reading an article about all the girls named Khaleesi entering middle school, and I thought it would be cool to have a similar thing for a 2040s-era GoT sequel series (Gould was born in 2040, for instance)

The Democratic Party is one of two major contemporary political parties in the United States. Its main political rival has been the Republican Party since the 1850s.

The party believes in a robust social safety net for education, healthcare, and basic necessities funded by progressive taxation to address economic inequality. Democrats are also staunch defenders of the environment, favoring an immediate end to the use of unclean energy in favor of fusion power. They also support the protection of personal freedoms and civil liberties (such as abortion, marijuana, and guns) and generally support minimizing government intrusion while upholding the rule of law.

The Republican Party is one of two major contemporary political parties in the United States. Its main political rival has been the Democratic Party since the 1850s.

The party believes in a variant of Civic Nationalism, which contrasts with the Democrat's values-based worldview. Republicans have a wide variety of opinions on social issues, although most generally support things like marijuana and LGBT rights. A large part of the party platform is predicated on the belief that "the powerful" conspires to worsen the living conditions of everyday Americans.
