wikipedia is really funny because of how it wants to avoid alternate theories or something like look at the phrasing of this:

Hyman A. Pressman (April 23, 1914 – March 15, 1996) served as the Comptroller of Baltimore City, Maryland, from 1963–1991. He ran for Governor of Maryland in 1966 as an Independent after the Democratic Party nominated segregationist George P. Mahoney as its candidate.

Pressman's gubernatorial candidacy may have been a spoiler for Mahoney. Had the 10% of the vote received by Pressman instead gone to Mahoney, Spiro Agnew would have lost the 1966 gubernatorial election by a narrow margin. Had Agnew not been elected governor of Maryland in 1966, it is unlikely that he would have been chosen as Richard Nixon's vice-presidential running mate in 1968.

this makes me think of a really funny tl where mahoney somehow unites the democrats and agnew loses, but is for some reason still tapped by nixon (pause) for vice president

[1] Won popular vote
[2] Killed by Albanian Mob
[3] Finished below 5%, but finished second in Kansas
[4] After the impeachment of Agnew, the mainstream of the Republican Party changed the name to the "United America Party", but this prompted a split, as the UAP was generally more conservative, and led by "paleoconservative" thinkers. As such, the "Independence Party" was formed by more liberal ex-Republicans. Neither would enter office for more than a decade.

what if jesse jackson was reverse george wallace (strategy wise) and was using the democratic party as a springboard to form his own party

also for some reason iacocca runs in 1988 and gets strong-armed into making jackson his VP

he beats on pat robertson after he wins and the liberal wing walks out

anyway iacocca gets killed in 1991 by some plane attack

jackson uses this to get re-elected in 1992, but pretty quickly turns his campaign into the creation of a rainbow coalition party, which is influenced by these fellers

anyway, republicans get word of this and do jackson like the feds did henry wallace, release a memo connecting him to various radical left wing groups, calling him "unamerican" and after they win in a 1994 sweep, impeach him for financial misuse of PUSH, putting jackson's vice president, the moderate still-democrat jim folsom jr., at president

in 1996, republicans storm to the presidency by nominating oliver north, who of course is senator ittl, but the rainbow party finishes second in a four-way-race after nominating jackson's secretary of education ron daniels

the rest kinda happens as it happens tbh

It is not a far stretch to imagine that if Agnew had contested corruption charges half as hard as Nixon denied culpability for Watergate – as Goldwater and several other stalwart conservatives wanted him to – today we might be speaking of Agnew-Democrats and Agnewnomics, and deem Agnew the father of modern conservatism.[207]

This is frankly brilliant--a big-tent coalition of all the unsatisfiable weirdos who vote generic third-party in OTL (socialists, radical centrists, and... let's be polite and say "single-issue voters concerned with their bodily fluids"), who, in classic American fashion, only get elected because the choice is between socialism and a black man.

Going to assume these two things are just a little bit connected.
I imagine this is...not a fun timeline to be Jewish in.
