The Anti-Fascist Coalition/Popular Front lining up to defeat the appeasing National Government is one of your phreshest ideas. So to the extent that I was planning to steal it for the local election night TL I briefly planned to do before realising it'd just expose how surface-level my actual knowledge of British politics is.

The basic idea of this was an exploration of how a very alternate Russian Revolution might take shape in a world with no WWI. Nicholas II is assassinated in 1916, and Alexei is removed by hardliners who want a strong emperor, only to then be reinstated when Mikhail II begins to indulge in too many reforms. The result of this is a revolution in 1917, which sets up a fractious Provisional Government. The ascendancy of the various Communist factions then leads to a German invasion, and the emergence of a triumvirate which is in turn overthrown by a military dictatorship, which then falls apart after Germany forces a peace treaty similar to Brest-Livotsk in 1920 after a gruelling two year war. The rump Russian state is then coopted by Kolchak's nationalists, who swear a war of "national Revanchism" and link up with a paranoid France which by 1920 has not fought a war with Germany yet. I have vague ideas about this European war coming in the late 1920s and maybe a weakened Franco-Russian alliance begins defeated by an Anglo-German continental system, but that's all very vague... I might do a list of British PMs at some point!

The really really obvious Nazi attack on California in the late 30s rather rallies interventionist attitudes in America, and what ends up happening is that America leaps into the action along with Britain and France in 1939. Yankee doughboys manage to slow the German advance but America is no better prepared for Blitzkrieg than the British and French and eventually have to pull out. Fears over the 1940 election lead to Roosevelt forming his fateful 'Second National Union'. Howard Hughes becomes a national hero, wunderwaffen pouring from his factories to aid the American war effort. The combination of that America properly getting its house in order, and Hitler's attempted invasion of the Soviet Union leads to the fall of Germany in 1943. FDR retires in 1944 and with proper care and attention and time to rest and relax, dies in his 70s.

FDR is followed by FLG, and realising that his own base in the Republican party is rather narrow, retains the National Union brand. 'Independent' Democrats win the South and 'Independent' Republicans win the Northeast but America is happy under La Guardia. Sadly he dies in 1947 and is succeeded by the optimistic but extremely eccentric Wallace. Wallace is ultimately stripped of his status as Democratic leader and the 'Independents' of yesteryear coalesce behind an extremely neutral figure, the former Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe.

Marshall is unhappy in his role as figurehead and a figurehead he is as the coalition of segregationist southerners and conservative northerners begins to come together. For this reason he stands aside in 1952. Joe McCarthy rides a wave of demagoguery and scaremongering, pointing to communist advances in East Asia, and then pointing out the 'Second National Union' coalition which had similarly come together under ex-Republican and FLG protegee Vito Marcantonio, and saying the two were linked.

Meanwhile, Howard Hughes' business empire continues to grow, the money he has invested in the 'Third National Union' finally coming home to roost. New Dealer restrictions on business, which had been maintained by Marshall, will be cut, the Reds under the bed will be hunted out and brought to book, the Soviet Union will be opposed to the hilt, and civil rights will be stifled like the crypto-Bolshevism it so obviously is...

Governors of Russian America

1863-1870: Dmitry Maksutov (Russian-American Company)
1870-1874: Vasily Zavoyko (Imperial Navy)
1874-1891: Andrei Popov (Imperial Navy)
1891-1900: Fyodor Avelan (Imperial Navy)
1900-1901: Vsevolod Rudnev (Imperial Navy)
1901-0000: A. M. Bezobrazov (State Council)

Presidents of the Free Republic of Aleska

April 1900 - May 1900: Jefferson Randolph Smith (Free League)

Owing to a prolonged Civil War and a new peacetime government with little desire for foreign ventures, the American purchase of Alaska never happens. A lesser offer to Great Britain also falls through. Alexander II liquidates the nearly bankrupt Russian-American Company and appoints a military governor. For the next thirty years, Russian Alaska remains a desolate colony, populated by sailors, natives, and criminals. The decline of the fur trade is offset by growth in the whaling, fishing, and shipbuilding industries. Beginning in the 1870s, Alaska becomes a popular location to send political radicals and sectarians. In 1893 the Doukhobors are deported en masse to Cape Constantine, where many of them die of starvation.

The discovery of gold in the Yukon in 1897 sets off a frenzy that the Governor is powerless to stop. The next few years reveal the pitfalls of long-term military administration. Thousands of illegal American prospectors flooding the territory soon clash with local magnates, who complain to St. Petersburg of violence and lawlessness. Matters come to a head in April 1900, when an alliance of exiles and filibusterers led by the American J.R. Smith seize Novo-Arkhangelsk and declare a "Free Republic of Aleska [sic]". The improbable Republic survives for two weeks, after which the insurrection is put down by the Pacific Fleet. Smith flees and is murdered by his own followers in Vancouver. American President Long protests the execution of American citizens and the presence of the Russian fleet in North America, leading to tense relations between the two great powers. With added pressure from the British, Russia is forced to pay compensation to the miners that have been evicted. In the wake of this embarrassment, authority is quietly transferred to a civilian State Secretary.

A.M. Bezobrazov sets to work correcting the Navy's economic mismanagement. Under the umbrella of the newly established Russian-American Mining Association, Bezobrazov uses state funds to properly exploit Alaska's natural resources. The end of the gold rush paves the way for copper mines and lumber yards. The influx of permanent settlers disrupts native society, leading to a series of violent confrontations that spell the end of benign neglect.

After four generations in space, humanity still struggled to adapt to life away from Terra. Those who lived planetside found ways to adjust—longer or shorter days, radiation from foreign stars, different levels of gravity—all of these could be managed. The endless twilight of space presented its own challenges. Spacers installed artificial sun lights, dark rooms for sleeping, and gravity cores to keep their minds and bodies grounded. The colonization of the Belt proved to be the most daunting undertaking in human history. Most colonies failed, their would-be founders skulking back to the Inner Rim, demoralized but satisfied to live out their days in the soothing familiarity that came with solid ground. A few refused to give up. Headstrong and space-starved, they pushed on to the other side, and came out stronger for it. Some even prospered.

Unfortunately, though the asteroids were adaptable to human life, they were hardly suitable for building stable societies. As the twenty-first century drew to a close, Ceres burned in the wake of SpaceX's ballistic missiles and Pallas atrophied into a desperate hedonistic cesspit, while distant Hygiea attempted to carve its own path in the solar system... with mixed results.

I've long toyed around with this idea but was never quite sure of how best to format it when toying around with lists, and have long struggled to write a Vignette on the subject. And then Bob dropped that Electoral History Billy Hughes, which not only had a similar theme but of course, struck me as the best way to go about showing it. So here goes.
