One woman, the singer, taking extraordinary joy in rubbing her relationship in the face of an ex, justifying her absurdly mean actions as a moral virtue due to seeing the “true heart” of a skater boy sk8er boi who happened to fall into a pop-punk career. she’s commodifying her boyfriend’s talent and fame as an inherent quality, taunting the ballet girl.
more to the point, the singer notes SPECIFICALLY how the ballet girl is a single mother, reinforcing that role as inherently inferior to the singers’. it’s a monument to the meanspirited pointscoring by which we judge relationships, as well as a monument to the capitalistic commodification of countercultural movements.

Tbf Mill formulated these ideas during Victorian times,he didn't expect social media to exist. He sorta expected society by 2024 would evolve massively to the point where average person would be educated enough and not be contrarian/a dickhead because of societal progress.

it was being fascetious for the most part; it’s never been super friendly to the idea of Free Debate as a cultural salve because humans inherently act in our own mode of rationality dependent on learned motivations and, like, eating food.

It has potential and it has flaws. Its biggest obstacle in most places are honestly the cost, hence countries like China that can mobilize a lot of funds and resources can do well than most other countries in doing so (though this also applies to solar, wind, and hydro as well).
This also applies to most other policy wonk favorites like land use and fopo, so I have tended to avoid it more often than not. Like online spaces are usually not the greatest places to have these convos unless you know the other person well.

policy wonk brain always gets extremely exposed when it comes to social inequalities, as the weberian machine can’t quite overwhelm a social structure built around said inequalities.
if it holds a policy position, it’s usually extremely distrustful of institutions in place. the one that it’s most split on is euthanasia, which it supports in theory but it needs a level of government oversight that most state institutions are too miserable and capitalist to institute in a humanitarian way
