Basically the TL;DR is that somehow Wilson makes it an independence instead of a devolution referendum, and this gets enough turnout that Scotland actually leaves for real. The long vaguely-lefty-Keynsian Labour government, only broken by a brief SDP interlude that falls apart trying to get some kind of voting reform, is broken when Fraser and his Crofter-Liberal type friends manage to get discontent with a sluggish, decaying, industrial economy propped up by government money behind them. Unfortunately, slashing the budget that keeps the nationalised industry running causes the entire economy to take a long walk off a short cliff.
Things--Get--Worse! Fraser ends up being killed at a rally when protestors collapse the stage, and if you thought public discontent with the government was bad then, the nation is now led by a Viscount who can be painted as out-of-tough so easily it's not even funny. Tommy Boy forms a deal with the remaining rump of Scottish Labour and the reformist Communists, and after 2 years of nationalising everything bar the kitchen sink factory his personal life gets leaked to the press. Boyd's EuroComs really start to rattle the establishment, and after the wealth tax is cranked up to 75% an awful lot of American money starts to head the way of a certain party...
Meecham's new Scottish constitution outright bans anticapitalism, and when the EuroComs start to complain they get a boot in the face. Unfortunately for the SNS&RP, the General Strike that eventually occurs when the shock treatment rolls into gear takes place when the US can't spare any tanks. Because they're all heading to Beijing. Or at least, they were. The military dump Le Funny Pug Man due to the whole WW3 thing going on, and while rationing and conscription and Emergency Powers come in hard, at least Scotland wasn't a target for nukes. Just for insane Northumbrian nationalists who managed to find an awful lot of guns and people. Some claim Aethelfrith is a psychic mutant, all we know is he's managed to sweep the Lowlands handily.
