Non-SLP Writing Opportunities

Given how many writers we have on here who have diverse writing interest, not just AH, I thought it might be worth creating a thread about non-SLP writing opportunities. There's quite a lot of them out there, and some of them are worth sharing here.

To open things off, here is a link to an anthology call for one called Fit For the Gods. Full submission guidelines are in the link, but in summary:

- Looking for retellings of Greco-Roman mythology, considering diversity in racial, ethnic and sexual identities
- Want original stories of between 5000-10,000 words
- No reprints, multiple or simultaneous submissions
- Submissions close 11:59pm Eastern, February 1, 2022.
- Open to all genres, so AH tales, or alternate retellings of alternate folklore (like the recent AlloAmericana anthology) might be something they'd consider.
- Payment is a tidy US $1500 per accepted story.

Unfortunately this call is only open for the rest of the month, but if anyone feels like writing quickly, or has an existing unpublished story which would suit (with or without tweaks), it may be worth checking this one out.

Fantastic Schools 5 and Fantastic School Hols – Call For Submissions

Wisecraft Publications is putting out a call for submissions for the next pair of Fantastic Schools anthologies. We are looking for stories (3000-12000 words, unless by prior arrangement) set in magical schools, or related in some way to the theme of magical education. If you are interested, please read the guidelines below and then drop us an email with your proposal. All profits shared equally. Please also forward this email to anyone you think might be interested.

Check out the first volumes here.

Fantastic Schools V.5

We are looking for generalist stories set within a magical educational environment. They can be of any sort, including sporty, bully-gets-theirs, newbie wins respect, dark lord gets beaten by students, etc. We prefer reasonably stand alone stories, but feel free to write them in your own worlds; we invite writers to include details that might draw new readers to their stories.

Fantastic School Hols

What do students do on those long school holidays? Work experience? Private tutoring? Visit each other’s homes … whatever else … as long as it touches on magical education in some way. We prefer reasonably stand alone stories, but feel free to write them in your own worlds; we invite writers to include details that might draw new readers to their stories.

We are looking for submissions of stories dealing with any aspect of life at a magical school and/or magical education. School life, extracurricular activities, teachers’ trials, life as a magical custodian—this is your chance to explore beyond what has appeared in your favourite magical school, be it Hogwarts, Roke, Whitehall, or more.

The Fantastic Schools anthology is intended for a YA and general audience. Stories do not need to be directed at a YA audience, but story content should be appropriate for both teen and adult readers.

Magic schools must be original to the author or used with the author’s express permission, which must be provided in writing beforehand. No unauthorized fan fiction will be accepted.

Please query with your story idea, so to avoid too many stories on the same exact topic.

Word count: 3000 to 12,000 (for longer stories, inquire.)

Payment: Authors will receive equal shares of 55% of profits.

Please send queries and questions to:

Note: Query acceptance does not guarantee a place in the anthology.

Was scrolling through anthology listing on Horror Tree and came across this - Great Wars:

Deadline: April 1st, 2022
Payment: $50 and 3 contributor’s copies
Theme: Write a story about a historical war of any culture and any era and change one aspect of it to see how the war might change and explore from there!

LBP is pleased to announce that we will be accepting short story submissions through April 1st, 2022.

We will choose 8-12 submissions to be published in our 2022 fall anthology, Great Wars!

The prompt: Write a story about a historical war of any culture and any era and change one aspect of it to see how the war might change and explore from there!

Examples: How would the Revolutionary War change if soldiers on all sides had access to advanced weapons, such as those which are laser-powered?

Accepted stories will be published in the ‘Great Wars’ anthology! E-book and print!

  • Every genre qualifies.
  • Works must be previously unpublished.
  • Must be at least 3k but no more than 9k.

  • No headers or footers, please. Name and title on top/left of the first page.

If accepted, contributors will receive $50.00 as a flat fee for their story and receive (3) author copies of the printed anthology after publication. Contributors will be paid via PayPal.

International Contributors:

Due to high postage rates (and/or postal accessibility) to some regions in the world, author copies may not be feasible and we’ll adjust the flat fee to accommodate.

Author Rights:
  • Authors will retain the copyrights to the story.
  • If selected, the Author agrees not to publish or permit others to publish the story in any form prior to its publication and appearance in the Anthology for a period of twelve [12] months after the publication of the Anthology without the prior written permission of the anthologist.
