Drake's Drum

HA2.jpg

The ascension of the United States, to the status of the world’s unchallenged hegemon was caused, in no small part, by the American biker gangs. This may seem an extraordinary claim at first glance, but causality in this case is clear and inarguable.

Three Presidents from the Drake's Drum timeline.

L to R

Ronald Reagan (Republican) President of the United States 20/1/77-20/1/85
Albert Gore (Democrat) President of the United States 20/1/93-20/1/01
Mickey Leland (Democrat) President of the United States 20/1/01-20/1/05

Thanks for the 'heads-up.' I don't like the sound of the last sentence. Still, for Drake's Drum, in the vast majority of cases, I didn't stray far from real world designs done by real world designers. I shall definitely tune in.

The battleship brigade are notoriously impossible to please even by rivet counter standards so I wouldn't worry about it!

Is this a screen shot from Twitter?

No it's from YouTube - Dr Clarke's YT account. It may be critical, sure, but if it includes Drachininfel it's going to get a lot of viewers

Might be best to watch it and comment something positive - like "Hi, it's the author here! Thanks for taking a look at my books, and I'm loving the video as well - hopefully some people pick up the books afterwards!"

believe me, and I cannot emphasise this enough, a cheerful and positive engagement with this event will be much better than a negative reaction, or just ignoring it. You will get positive engagement and maybe if you're lucky the odd sale

@Nick Sumner also for the love of god do not engage in the comments with any criticisms, either from the hosts or the viewers in the comments themselves

you'll never win, because the entire point of Drachininfel et al is to be professional critics, and you'll just look bad. Nice, cheerful and positive initial comment and then nothing else

do that and you should be fine, as I've seen with many other authors facing this - but go critical or get baited and it'll be a disaster

No, no, no Skinny, you don't understand; ship nerds are legally required to take everything personally and argue every detail until the argument devolves into insulting one another's lunch and beating your opponent over the head with your copy of Parkes. Otherwise you can't even call yourself a naval enthusiast.

I know, I know

but years of being a reviewer, I've seen what happens when critic's and reviewers take on a book or series, and the author reacts; and very few of them have the sense to avoid or only engage positively

and it's entirely the fault of the critics and reviewers, but it's only ever the author's that come out bruised

Being (slightly) more serious now, obviously this presents an opportunity to bring the DD series to the attention of more people. So I have a You Tube etiquette question: Would it be okay in the comments to find an excuse to post a link to the DD website? Or would that be a big 'No no.'

That’s what the video is about - go for it!

I'd just add it to the end of your initial, positive comment - if the YouTubers are decent they should pin it so everyone can see it

the only issue will be if YouTube itself allows it - the system seems to be rather schizophrenic around allowing links themselves

Good point. Maybe do 'search for (name of site)' rather than giving the link itself.

Well, that was depressing.
"Don't read your reviews, weigh them" - I've found that phrase valuable over the years.

However, as Skinny says, this is ultimately a big shout-out to an audience directly in your niche. Years ago, Jack and I encountered some people being a bit 'nah' about Lavender, but still engaging closely with what we'd written and ultimately drawing attention to the book and inspiring others to form their own opinion by reading it. I'll keep an eye on DD sales to see if there's a noticeable translation into a boost.
