Biaggi’s Second Opium Den

State Within A State

"The Wallace Movement, built on decades of southern anger towards the increasingly authoritarian rule by the north, would show its full strength on November 5, 1968. A coalition stretching from the Mormon west to the Upper south showed that Americans, of all stripes, were growing opposed to government overreach."

Ted Kennedy / Fred Harris (Democratic) - 224 EVs
Richard Nixon / John Volpe (Republican) - 158 EVs
George Wallace / Ezra Taft Benson (American) - 148 EVs

1969-1975: Ted Kennedy / Fred Harris (Democratic)
1968 def. [elected by House of Representatives after "Grand Bargain" with New Mexican State Republican Party] Richard Nixon / John Volpe (Republican), George Wallace / Ezra Taft Benson (American)
1972 def. [disputed by state governments of Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Louisiana] George Wallace / Harry Byrd II (American), Jim Folton / George Romney (Republican)
1973: Governors Lester Maddox, John Rarick, James Allen, and Charles Sullivan challenge election results, declaring Kennedy administration "fraudulent". "Southern Crisis" begins as states begin to recognize George Wallace as president.
1973: Paramilitary conflict between Southern-based militias and the United States begins. Young Americans for Wallace, converted into the American Freedom League (led by David Duke), the Klu Klux Klan, the Minutemen, the Southern League, and other minor groups go onto commit various acts of war against the United States.
1973: A "Popular Front" led by Fred Hampton begins conflict against "Wallace Militias".
1975: In a landmark meeting, George Wallace and allies meet with President Kennedy to begin the "Southern Compromise". The south, as a so-called "designated region" within the United States, would have to be guaranteed participation on all presidential tickets and cabinets, and most southern laws would be "respected" by North, with a national referendum system to be utilized where all "controversial laws" would need majority backing from the south. However, segregation as it once existed would still end, but the existence of white paramilitaries would set back black groups for years. George Wallace would become Secretary of State, while "compromise candidate" Carl Sanders is made Vice President.

1975-1977: Ted Kennedy / Carl Sanders (Democratic)
1977-1981: Hiram Fong / Thad Cochran (Republican / Moderate American)
1981-1985: Hiram Fong / George Wallace (Republican)
1976 def. Carl Sanders / Hugh Carey (Democratic), Edwin Walker / Strom Thurmond (Remainder American)
1980 def. Fred Harris / Claude Kirk (Democratic)

1985-????: George Wallace / Clay Smothers (Republican)
1984 def. David Duke / John K. Singlaub (League for the Defense of America), John Kerry / Edwin Edwards (Democratic), Bobby Rush / Preacherman Fesperman (Rainbow)

i feel as tho the only way this could possibly end is some kind of post-Soviet Union fall-esq American Divorce. unless the Wallace regime literally becomes a fascist state and ethnically cleanses whole populations, the political situation would be entirely unsustainable in the United States at that moment in history especially.

100,000 wikipedia articles describing how southern democrats would’ve accepted one of “catholic, anti prohibition, tammany” but not all three in 1924 but not one describing how midwestern voters who make youtube videos in their cars would’ve accepted one of “mormon, ineffectual, rich” but not all three in 2012

If only it was 2/3, then we could've had President Huntsman

Romney '08 would have been so funny maybe one of the funniest things the Republicans could have done

obama winning the white vote and his reward is having to deal with sen. ronnie musgrove (D-MS) >>>>>>
Reminds me of that tl on the other side where Democrats absolutely crush the Republicans in the 2008 election because of some minor changes, and Democrats still barely do anything with their supermajorities, and Robert Reich loses his head.
