Dubya was pretty cozy with Ken Lay of Enron fame. It's not hard to imagine a world where they survive into the 2008 recession before dragging down the global energy market.
It kind of is, considering how many different fuses had been lit by the late 90s. Frankly, it’s truly astounding that Enron got as far as it did - and considering how much everything depended on Enron continuing to grow endlessly, any Enron which could avert that collapse, or even delay it more than a year or two, would not be the company we all know and presumably love.

so the aim here was to get britain to a point where the chairs of parliamentary select committees on foreign affairs. home affairs, etc etc are the relevant minister for that governmental department

To get there, my idea was to have a New Labour project that goes much further in the centralisation of power, authoritarian overreach etc. The root of that is Smith's survival to a narrower 97 victory. There is no Granita Pact to shore up Blair's position in the party and overshadowed by Smith, he feels much more insecure. Factional bloodletting leads to no compromise with the incipient Brownite faction and while Blair wins a majority of his own in 1998, he is far more susceptible and simultaneously less accountable to his most authoritarian instincts.

This reaches new heights in the spring 2002 election, delivering a landslide victory to Labour on the back of 9/11, engorging the PLP's ranks with Blairite sycophants. He doesn't have long to enjoy that however, as in 2003 the truth of Iraq's WMDs are revealed and butterflies lead to an impeachment attempt on Bush with teeth. Blair's meteroric appeal collapses and in a few short months he is forced out of office. Turns out that staffing the halls of power with people who want power simply for it's own sake isn't a good idea for your own longevity.

Milburn is the manifestation of the modern Labour Party, leading the way on extending private finance initiatives, the backdoor privatisation of the NHS, the vast expansion of the powers of the security state... the list goes on. He wins a majority of his own in 2006, always afraid of moving out of his predecessor's shadow. It's on a shockingly small percentage of the popular vote however, barely breaking 30% and enabled by the split vote between Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and the small halting mainland campaign of the DUP. Importantly, many of those dissatisfied with the authoritarian direction of Labour have defected to the Lib Dems, most prominently their new leader Peter Hain who establishes libertarian socialism as a coherent strand of Lib Dem thought.

The global financial crisis breaks in 2007, and the parlous state of British finances, wormridden by PFI, is finally revealed. As the economy collapses, civil unrest breaks out and a police force that has been bestowed with sweeping authority in the name of counter-terrorism gets to work criminalising the poor and disenfranchised. Strikes break out and work on the London Olympics is delayed and balloons in cost while the neighbourhoods that surround the half-mothballed project go to ruin. In 2011, Labour is the definitive loser coming third in the popular vote while the Lib Dems come first.

The Conservatives have been on a journey since 1997 and at the 2011 election two very different kinds of libertarian come together to form a coalition the promises to undo the excesses of authoritarian overreach and unaccountable majoritarian government. The era of Parliamentary Dictatorship is to come to a close as a new consensual system is adopted. Since the 2011 election, Labour has continued to decline unable to escape the legacy of Blair and Milburn, while the Tories and Lib Dems have emerged as roughly the two largest parties. Leaders of the parties essentially serve as Convenors or Spokespersons leading debate in the Commons, rather than as prospective heads of government in their own right.

As of 2022, the Labour Party has gone bankrupt and much of the PLP has formed the New Britain Group, now totally shorn of a trade union link. A small group of Socialist Labour MPs persist on the backbenches, but increasingly caucus alongside the Lib Dems.

Economist Milton Friedman later noted that he, Friedman, regarded Reagan's pick of Bush as "the worst decision not only of his campaign but of his presidency", and that Rumsfeld was instead his preference. "Had he been chosen," Friedman said, "I believe he would have succeeded Reagan as president and the sorry Bush-Clinton period would never have occurred."

They tried to kill us. We won. Let's eat.

[laughter from the audience]

...is that not enough? Fine, then. The full story. Oh you want it from the start? Well, in the beginning G_d created the heaven and the earth...

[more laughter]

Alright, alright, fine then! I think it's an important point, though. With history, it's hard--very hard indeed--to pick a "beginning" that properly, well, begins. Every point in history is dependent on the points before it, and so on and so forth...really, if I wanted to waste any more of your time I could start with the exodus from Egypt into the promised land, the first time we returned here, or the destruction of the Temple by Babylon, the first time we were forced to leave. While our national story does start there, or in another sense it starts with Maimonides' Thirteen Principles, or in a synagogue in Semlin, the best place to start for our purposes is the 1920s, with one of the more trouble Mutasarrifates of the Ottoman Empire...

A lot of accounts act like the New Maccabees came out of nowhere, that their history begins with Katznelson getting off the boat from White Russia--well, that's really not true. There had been Jewish communities in Palestine for, well, quite some time, and their number was increasing as aliyah began to look a more attractive option thanks to the barbarisms going on in Russia at the time under Denikin, and of course this began to cause friction. After 1908, the new government had started out by being friendly to us if we toed the line--accepting Ottoman citizenship, swearing loyalty, all that sort of thing--but they'd changed their tone not five years later, were trying to bar those making aliyah from landfall, accusing us of being foreign agents, the same old story from all over.

By the early Twenties, Djemal Pasha [hissing and booing] not now! Oh, alright, fine...a certain gentleman had managed to outmaneuver the other two members of the triumvirate, and the policies of discrimination became policies of destruction. Katznelson, at the time, was growing his influence in the Jewish community's left-wing through his labour organising efforts on behalf of Jewish workers, and so faced his work constantly being opposed by Ottoman authorities. The sudden shift to more direct cultural suppression, the burning of libraries, the breaking-up of prayer meetings, this was something new to him, that he knew had to be fought. So he reached out to the group that had been preparing for such a day--the HaShomer, the watchmen, who'd been acting as an internal police and protecting the Yishuv.

They both needed each other--Katznelson and the Histadrut had the foundations for a Hebrew civil society, and Shochat and the HaShomer had the means to defend that society. A sword in one hand, a plow in the other--that was the way. They took their name from the Maccabees not just because they fought in this land, once, and won, against an empire that hated them, but because in the midst of that bloodshed they found time to restore the Temple. Those were the ideals of Labour Zionism--that in building a new nation, we have a duty to make a just one, not just another state, but a light unto the nations.

The Ottoman armies laughed at us, said we didn't have the men or the resources to last, but once we got the port of Hadera secure, the whole diaspora could join the fight as well. Just like how what some though would last only one night was enough to last eight, what some thought would last only seven years lasted eight times that. It was thanks to His hand protecting us that we weathered the splits--between religious and secular, between kibbutznik and state-builder, and yes, between ourselves and the other inhabitants--and stayed united in our common struggle, to live in our land and keep our customs, whatever those customs were, with no Pasha to breathe down our neck!

On this day, so many years ago, the 7th of Tevet, we came out the other side. Decades of struggle were over--we could hold elections, be part of the community of nations, accomplish the dream of two thousand years. They tried to kill us, and we won.

So let's eat!

[applause from the audience]

Originally this was an idea for a Alternate History British Noir story, but instead I’ve created the setting for ‘Hilde Monte’s Inglorious Bastards’;

1937-1940: Neville Chamberlain (Conservative leading National Government)
1940-1941: Duff Cooper (Conservative & National)
1941-1946: Euan Wallace (Conservative &
National)
1941 (Majority) def: Clement Attlee (Labour), Archibald Sinclair (Liberal), Stafford Cripps (‘Action’ Labour)
1946-1947: Arthur Greenwood (Labour)
1946 (Majority) def: Euan Wallace (Conservative & National), Archibald Sinclair (Liberal), Stafford Cripps (Action)
1947-1953: Hugh Dalton (Labour)
1950 (Majority) def: Oliver Stanley (Unionist), Wilfrid Roberts (Liberal), George Strauss (Action)
1953-1955: Manny Shillwell (Labour)
1955-: Anthony Eden (Unionist leading ‘War Government’)

1955 (Anti-Fascist Coupon) def: Manny Shillwell (Labour), Wilfrid Roberts (Liberal), George Strauss (Action), Oswald Mosley (Union)

As War erupts in Europe, it’s architect, Adolf Hitler is killed by a bomb at Bürgerbräukeller alongside Rudolf Hess and several other prominent Nazi’s. Herman Göring takes over after a chaotic period of infighting which stalls the early advantages of Germany. Chamberlain is able to stay around a bit longer as a result, as the ‘Phoney War’ occurs for longer as Göring consolidates control. By the time Germany is attacking Norway and the Low Countries, Duff Cooper has returned from America and becomes Prime Minister of a National War Government.

Germany stalls in France and the bloody stalemate lasts to Spring of 1941, where increasing concerns over the Soviet Union and Italy stalling in the East leads to Germany coming cap in hand to an Armistice deal. Cooper is forced out the by War Weary backbenchers who fear another World War 1 and a former Chamberlain support Euan Wallace comes to the table. The War in Europe ends rather awkwardly for everyone as no one particularly wins.

Euan Wallace would be forced to an election by Clement Attlee and rebel Tories who want to squash Germany once and for all. Wallace wins a slim majority on a continuation of Chamberlain policies and the Labour Party proceeds to rip each other to shreds as an Anti-National Government splinter does decently in the 1941 election. Wallace tenure is spent mainly fighting party coup attempts as the Chamberlainites and the Edenites try to gain control of the party for there own ends and trying to establish the Welfare State that Chamberlain envisioned.

Herbert Morrison’s attempt to oust Attlee leads to Arthur Greenwood managing to become the leader with support of the Unions and the failure of the Wallace Government particularly with fighting the Japanese coupled with Nazi’s invading the East and battling the Soviet Union which ends around 1943 causing many to sour on the Armistice. Greenwood is voted in 1946 by a population tired of the National Government and who want reform and a Labour Government to guide them through.

Greenwood starts increasing aid being supplied to the Soviets and plans to bring Britain back into War against Germany, is ruined by a combination of Britain’s military being tied down policing the Empire, fighting Middle Eastern Independence movements and the Japanese whilst Greenwood alcoholism gets the better of him.

Hugh Dalton wins by combining support from Morrisonites and Union voters against the scary Leftist Nye Bevan who joins Action not long after. Dalton is more preoccupied with keeping the British Empire spends much of the late Forties to keep it in British Control as the Japanese are beaten back. Dalton tries to avoid getting involved in Europe, but not longer after his re-election an opportunity appears.

The Mussolini regime implodes spectacularly after he’s assassinated by Anti-Fascists and the various wannabe Il Duce’s proceed to bring about a Civil War. Britain decides to ‘protect and secure’ Italy’s Colonies with help from apathetic troops and begins supporting Anti-Fascist forces across the country with weapons and troops. Germany’s reaction is to support the forces of Bruno Mussolini.

Italy and Greece become a battleground between German supported Government forces and British supported Anti-Fascists and Dalton believes that the Anti-Fascists will win. Heinrich Müller head of the Nazi Security Forces is killed in an assassination concocted by Hilde Monte and her connections to Hugh Dalton cause an awkward cool war to become very warm, as Germany decides to deal with this problem once and for all, as liberal use of poison gas is used against Partisan forces. Dalton isn’t seen as having the muster to commit to a full out Anti-Nazi war and so his Secretary of Defence, Manny Shillwell is made Prime Minister.

But having a Jewish Socialist Prime Minister inspires the nascent Fascist movement and Anti-Semitic groups to return from the woodwork and Oswald Mosley's Anti-War ‘Union’ campaign inspires enough people to become a political problem for Shillwell as street fighting across Britain becomes commonplace. As Britain slowly heads back to war, as Spanish forces also see Anti-Fascist partisans emerge to retake Catalan and more, it seems that a more stable War Government must be formed.

In 1955, the so called Tory Democrat and rabble rousing supporter of War against Germany, Anthony Eden finds himself becoming a designated leader of a War Government to be, as that year’s coupon election see’s Britain elect a Pro-War Government as Mosley flounders.

As Britain enters officially into War and secretly gains support from the Soviet Union, a daring plan by Hilde Monte and other members of the Union Time Ltd is concocted to take out Herman Göring and his gaggle of supporters once and for all.
