Like the title says, what John Hinckley Jr. had used a bigger bullet? What kind of damage wound the ricochet have done to his body? If he survived how would it have affected his presidency? What about his reelection in 1984?

On a related note would/could a one term Reagan presidency be a good way to explain the timeline in the movie My Fellow American?

I don't think you necessarily need him to pick a different weapon - the ammunition he used in the attempt was meant to be explosive, with lead azide in it. Only one of the six might have actually detonated, the one that hit James Brady, the press secretary.
