It Wasn't For Lack of Trying- 1957-8 Soviet Invasion of Syria
  • Screenshot 2023-04-23 4.03.28 PM.png
The 1957-1958 Warsaw Pact Invasion of Syria was an armed conflict fought between the Soviet Union and it's allies and the Republic of Syria. Troops entered the country via Iraq, but quickly got bogged down. The Communist forces resorted to large-scale carpet bombings of Syrian cities, although military assistance to Syria from NATO quickly resulted in many downed Soviet planes, some of which were taken by the Americans for research.

Wanting to save face, General Vasyl Tkachenko forged an order from General Secretary Andropov authorizing the deployment of a 100 kiloton nuclear device on Damascus. Over 300,000 would die in just a few hours, with the city and government being completely leveled. The Syrians, who had been winning, capitulated quickly.

The backlash to Andropov's supposed decision was fierce, with the Politburo removing him within two weeks and replacing him with Vasyl Tkachenko. The new premier, in a supposed 'gesture of goodwill' agreed to cap the total number of warheads at 1,000.

It Wasn't For Lack of Trying- 1959 South Vietnam Presidential Election
  • January 2, 1959 - South Vietnamese General Election:
    Screenshot 2023-05-07 2.14.07 PM.png

    PRESIDENTS OF SOUTH VIETNAM:
    Ngo Dinh Diem (CL) -
    1955-1959
Phan Khac Suu (PS) - 1959-1963

NOTE: Ho Chi Minh died in late 1954 so the Communists have been under more radical leadership. This has resulted in much of the OTL Communist movement pledging to put down arms if the South elects someone amenable to more moderate strains of Communism. This is realized with the election of Phan Khac Suu, a prominent socialist who promised an even more left wing agenda.

Many observers were confused about a potential self-coup by Diem, but a call from the President-elect to President Johnson forced Diem to step aside.

  • April 26, 1959 - Spanish General Election:

    PRESIDENTS OF SPAIN:
    Juan de Borbon (CSD) -

    FIRST EXECUTIVE COUNCIL OF SPAIN:
    Democratic Salvation Coalition -
    114 Seats
National Protection Union - 80 Seats
Communist Party of Spain - 6 Seats

NOTES: A higher option of the US leads to Spain adopting a different form of government. Specifically, a presidential election that determines how many seats a coalition gets. Since Borbon won 57%, his coalition- the big-tent Democratic Salvation Coalition- won 57% of the vote. This only applies to the first round, so if a third-place candidate gets 15%, they get 15% of the seats.

    PRESIDENTS OF SOUTH KOREA:
    Syngman Rhee (
    L) - 1948-1956
    Chang Myon (D) - 1956-?

Elections for the Presidency of South Korea were held on March 15, 1960. Incumbent President Chang Myon of the Democratic Party ran for re-election. Myon ran on a record of economic growth- which would eventually be known as the beginning of the 'Korean Economic Miracle'- along with his pro-democracy and anti-authoritarian policies. Lee Ki Poong- the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament- was nominated by the previously-dominate Liberal Party. Former President Syngman Rhee also ran for his old job, but his polling collapsed from the low-20s to single digits following his indictment on corruption charges.

The President was re-elected to a second four-year term.
