Fascinating. I could see Artemis 8 being condemned as a waste of resources in 2020 but if it launched in 2021, it could be a huge feelgood moment: "look at the cool thing we can do if we try", a symbolic victory over a dark hour. Period films would be featuring Artemis 8 as an emotional peak for generations!
I remember in 2020 wondering if Trump would try to rush them to something like this so he could grandstand about it before the election.
wasn't that in some ways a version of the original dear moon mission.

It is, indeed, as the original plan for dearMoon involved using the very same Crew Dragon capsule and a Falcon Heavy. That soon changed to the current plans for flying with Starship instead after SpaceX elected to focus on it instead of trying to get Flacon Heavy crew-rated.wasn't that in some ways a version of the original dear moon mission.
