Although spying on an ally is fairly common practice. It's one of those "Everyone denies doing it and everyone says it's a bad thing to do, but everyone does it."

The spying on Greece seems to have been a particularly egregious "ha ha we can just DO this" case

Can I check - very late I acknowledge - have we had an article on the Olympics that were planned but did not take place, i.e. 1940 in Tokyo or Helsinki and 1944 in London, let alone the 1940 Winter Olympics planned for Sapporo, Japan and the 1944 Winter Olympics planned for Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy? These would have occurred in a world without a Second World War or a different one to that we knew, but given the likely political tensions it seems that boycotts and protests would have been common, even with London, given the movement for independence in India. Sorry if I missed this on here and please point me in the right direction. Thanks.
