At the end of 1984 and the beginning of 1985, with Howard Baker's retirement, there was a race between Republican Senators for Senate Majority Leader. In the final ballot, it came down to Bob Dole, from Kansas, and Ted Stevens, from
Alaska. Dole won by a narrow margin, thanks to Jesse Helms getting conservative Republicans to vote for him. What if Stevens had won? How would his Senate leadership differ from Dole's?
