I watch and wonder

Sit and ponder

My mind bound over yonder

Cross that vast sea

Land of serenity

Quiet indemnity

Stripped to depravity

Hidden brutality

From the River Styx they came

For our souls to claim

Walls of marble

Stained with Bordeaux

Now a sea between

I little think of the gleam

Now only the steam

Informs but a seam

In the tapestry of we
It was quiet when we came

Waiting

O’er the bow of the Saint Romagne

Inticipating

Loud was the gnashin’

Crashing

Sharp was the thrashin’

Smashing

Red was our blood

Seeping

Red was their’s too

Reaping

Now the years have past

At last

And their names fade

Outlast

And my soul may breath free

[2] Joe Biden resigned as President after it was revealed by Taylor Lorenz of The Washington Post that his campaign had planted moles at Truth Social to leak negative information about Donald Trump and suppress posts that were negative towards Biden.

Based on Twitter comparing Biden's approval ratings today to previous presidents in their first terms...

I really wanna see someone try and write a TL around the Ultimate Universe because Ultimates 2 literally implies that Cheney and Laura Bush die in a supervillain attack, lmfao.

IIRC the mass attack by the Liberators on the US that kills lots of Americans including the president's wife ended with detente and not nuclear bombs being dropped. You softy, Mark!

Biden as Nixon!!! This is what I've been saying, it's insane that it takes til 2061 for a woman president, but having her being the Republican Obama equivalent checks out.

With Jake Laturner as president in 2073... who behaves like Biden who behaved like Nixon.... infinite Nixons, in a loop

The Mayor's On Crack

2009-2013: Rudy Giuliani (Republican)

2008 (with Rick Perry) def. Hillary Clinton (Democratic)
2011: Giuliani escapes removal from office in Senate impeachment trial, 59 guilty - 40 not guilty - 1 vacant

2013-2021: Barack Obama (Democratic)
2012 (with George Miller) def. Rick Perry (Republican)
2016 (with George Miller) def. Mitch Daniels (Republican), write-ins

2021-0000: Elizabeth Warren (Democratic)
2020 (with Steve Bullock) def. Rudy Giuliani (Republican), John Kroger (Independent)

Short, topical scenario. I’ve read multiple articles and blog posts recently where the gist is “Doesn’t it seem ironic that Giuliani’s being prosecuted under the RICO Act he famously used against the Mafia? Well, remember, he whipped up the NYPD into a racist riot in 1992; he's always been like this.”

Different situation in 2008 (maybe the crash starts later?) means Rudy narrowly wins the presidency even after Bush’s bungling; he proceeds to use the office to help Bernie Kerik out of some legal trouble and gets himself embroiled in a bunch of conspiracies and cover-ups. With large Dem majorities in Congress – even larger after the midterms – he doesn’t have much of an ability to set the agenda, so he turns to the bully pulpit and fully embraces the outer-borough bully that was under the surface all along. This is perfect for the base, of course, but the GOP establishment isn’t yet ready to turn the party over to a crook (although they don’t want to give the Dems the satisfaction of a successful impeachment either).

With Hillary having blown a sure thing and the economy still biting and the Blue Dogs soiled because some of them voted to acquit Rudy, Obama and his supermajorities are quite a bit more proactive than OTL, especially with the Republicans now mostly focused on keeping Giuliani from taking over the party. Of course they don’t succeed, and by Right Now ITTL the Dems have been successfully sailing on a more populist course while Staten Island Fascism rules the opposition. Kinda like Trump but a little more suburbanite – fiscally drier and focused on law-n-order and racism.

(Oh, and as one of Giuliani’s star prosecutors who proudly repudiates his former boss’s crudeness and criminality, Kroger is the perfect Do-Nothing Centrist for Mike Bloomberg’s money – plus it helps the candidate himself escape the gubernatorial recall petitions being circulated back in Oregon.)

I’ve been working on a 2008 HRC loses, 2012 Obama TL myself, so I obviously really like this. It’s kind of crazy that even with a more energized Republican base (due to their President being ‘persecuted’ by the Dems) and some Blue Dog opposition, Obama still has really big liberal majorities, but that’s 2008-12 for you. Also just how bad does the economy get? Is it a full on second depression, or does Giuliani pass a stimulus and bring back some faith to the economy? Lastly, I’m wondering how you settled on Miller as Obama’s VP? He works pretty well as a committed left-liberal choice, but is he also chosen a nod to Pelosi?

PS: only you would have John Kroger pass the 5% threshold in a list :p

Thanks!

I'd imagine Giuliani passes some level of stimulus but on a smaller scale - I didn't think about it too hard but I doubt he'd totally Hoover it.

Miller fulfils the Biden conditions of being a Congressional veteran and a goofy old white guy, but yes, he's also a) a staunch liberal and b) a close ally of Pelosi's, which are both considerations for TTL Obama.

Lol, yes Kroger is a very on-brand inclusion, although I do think he's kind of an interesting character (despite being very dull on an interpersonal level). He had this great backstory - ex-Marine, beat alcoholism, became a nationally renowned Mafia prosecutor, put away the Enron guys - and then just got into a Peter Principle rut once he moved into administration, failing at everything and getting new jobs anyway because the govt-nonprofit blob likes him. He's been a total fart of a leader at the Oregon DoJ, at Reed, and at the Navy War College. He's a case study in one of the faults of meritocracy!

I also presume he doesn’t go crazy with Iran, which likely further helps with not Hoovering it.

I would’ve hoped that after eight years in the Senate Obama would’ve been seen as having enough experience to not need a septuagenarian.

There is just something about Oregon and attracting weirdo technocratic outsiders; first Kroger and last year Kristof.

Two CEOs in the 90s, too, Harry Lonsdale and Tom Bruggere, and the crypto guy who ran in OR-05 last year. None of them have been very successful (Kroger won but then resigned under a cloud), so you'd think folks would have learned that that's probably not the right political formula here...

Britannia 68’:

1957 - 1960: Selwyn Lloyd (Conservative Majority)
1960 - 1963: Hugh Gaitskell (Labour)
1960 (Majority) def. Selwyn Lloyd (Conservative), Jo Grimond (Liberal)
1963 - 1965: George Brown (Labour Majority)
1965 - 1968: Quintin Hogg (Conservative)

1965 (Majority) def. George Brown (Labour), Jo Grimond (Liberal)
1968 - 1969: Reginald Maudling (Conservative Majority)
1969 - : Anthony Crosland (Labour)

1969 (Majority) def. Reginald Maudling (Conservative), Jeremy Thorpe (Liberal), Collective Leadership (Unity)

Britain, 1969;

The ashes of Belfast and Derry still smoulder, the air of Glasgow and Manchester is still quiet even as men prepare to go back to work, in London the remnants of rubber bullets and tear gas canisters are brushed away, alongside broken glass, discarded banners and the occasional blood soaked rag.

The past year has been one of a seeming endless chaos.

Quintin Hogg and Reginald Maudling were not the men to bring a peaceful resolution to the chaos of 68’ - 69’. British troops continued messy engagements in Aden and Malaysia was bad enough, but the sudden and violent end of British Hong Kong would scar the psyche of Britain. The government’s support for the increasingly unpopular Vietnam War didn’t help matters much.

The economic woes didn’t help things, the economy had been overheating since George Brown had stumbled into the Prime Minister’s office. But the inability to call a wage freeze or stop the Unions organising strikes would drag on the Hogg government’s ability to govern. Hogg would try and rabble rouse about ‘enemies within’, but red baiting didn’t particularly work on the masses in this regard.

Britain it seemed would freeze through a series of different and disparate strikes that sprang up across the country. Hogg and Maudling would try and negotiate at various points, but often the police were sent to bluntly keep order.

Hogg would be forced to go, following a brutal crushing of a student demonstration against Vietnam and British Intervention in Biafra, not helping matters was the appearance of several MPs at the rally, including folks ranging from Renee Short to Jo Grimond to Enoch Powell who proceeded to demand Hogg’s head for his inability to seemingly govern.

Comparisons made to the deceased President De Gaulle rattled on, as Hogg would be met by men in grey suits who politely asked for his resignation. Unlike De Gaulle, Hogg didn’t board a helicopter to regroup, instead accepting and moving on.

Maudling, was popular within the party and despite his handling of protests as Home Secretary seemed up for the job. But Labour’s slightly younger leader, seemed capable and charismatic in comparison to the increasingly alcohol dependent Maudling.

Maudling seeing somewhat buoyant numbers thanks to an economy that had paused somewhat on the overheating, he would call an election.

But the mood of discontent lingered, particularly in Northern Ireland which saw various different politicians campaigning on behalf of the so called ‘Unity’ electoral pact. As pogroms flared up in Belfast and Derry and the army was deployed to try and keep order, Maudling was seen as being out of touch of governance, unable to deal with the problems at hand.

In the wake of the aloof and drunken Maudling, Labour swept back into office on a platform of ‘change’.

But it wasn’t to be the change that the students, protestors and strikers had wanted. Anthony Crosland had a mandate and a vision of governance that he wanted to achieve, Social Democracy was to be the cry for the 70s…

Meanwhile in Conservative Party, questions were being asked. It wasn’t their fault that all this happened, some said, it was the fault of students, Communists and protesters and that a firm hand should be applied. And one man who seemed to be able to convey that message is former Home Secretary Airey Neave, a man who seems to have plans for the future.

this is my first attempt to come up with a British Mai 68’ as it were, I would certainly like to go back to this because it’s interesting but I feel like I should read up a bit more on it etc.
