Tras la Caída
A take on the scenario suggested around the Alliance of the North flag by kinginthenorthwest, with his permission.

His work depicts the long aftermath of a global, total nuclear war in which civilization has survived, albeit heavily damaged: The collapse of the old nation-states, the famines that came with the nuclear winter and the irradiated environment, all of it prompted the decimation of the survivors and the regression of most of the world to local warlordist rule under precarious health and food conditions. In the Peninsula, Andalusia suffered the most in that regard, though some small spots of civilization regrouped or carried on.

THE NORTH

Though only two cities hit Portugal, that and the effects of very poor harvests were sufficient to break centralized order in the lusophone country. A military survivalist regime has united many of the old cities of the Condado Portocalensis and it expects to reconquer what was lost, even to bring a new Portuguese global empire... but as of now, delivering a tight martial order in its area is all it can do. To its north, the Leage of Five Cities, a Galician alliance formed against the incursion of the new rural warlords and bandits, and which effectively curbed the crime syndicates-turned-feuds around the Costa da Morte, is giving signs of losing momentum against the League of the North, a defensive and maritime confederation that has proved to be one of the most succesful experiments in this new Iberia. A formal capitulation might be waiting in the not-too-distant future.
South of the Alliance of the North lies the great contradiction that is the Leonese Federation: chauvinistic but modeled after the Alliance and increasily dependent on it. Euskadi, or the Basque Country, had its cities heavily hit during the Fall, but had the providential feature of its capital being far from the main urban centers and not a main target itself, so the Basque authority survived and kept civil order around a sense of nationhood -control near the capital is ironically tenuous, surrounded by shires where conflicts of identity and personal feuds clashed and created a human landscape that recognizes no authority beyond the hamlet, something the Basque government claims it will revert but secretly finds convenient as a cost-free defensive March. Now a heavily rural democracy, and on practice a pious feudal Guildist republic of heavily armed peasants and fishermen, it has earned its independence the hardest way and neither wants anything from the outside world, nor is a country you can easily fuck with. The Pyrenean Confederation is also a defensive commonwealth of interests within a natural barrier unaffected by the Fall (in very relative terms) and that was seen as a haven by many survivors, to the point the original citizens have fallen way below in proportional terms. It combines a survivalist-defensive and an aristocratic bent, with a layered legal status by antiquity, full citizenship being a a privilege of ancestry or one acquired by merits out of the ordinary.

THE SOUTH

In the southwestern peninsula, we find the other two remaining Portuguese sucessor states. The Algarve Repubic stands as a relatively prosper maritime state, benefiting from its intact ports and a strategic position that makes it easier to defend against the Rif raiders -the Sagres stronghold is where the administration sits, rather than in the commercial centers of Faro and Portimao-, so it's getting expansionistic and thalassocratic ambitions. The Alentejo commune is a collectivized junta where the -rebranded as- Communist Party of Alentejo and the military share power on behalf of the assemblies of farmers they swear to defend, and that as far off as might look now, expects a clash with Nova Lusitania in the future -a clash against Algarve is too risky at the moment-. The League of the Two Seas hasn't met the Algarvean success, but it started from a situation of much greater disarray. Starting as defensive commonwealth between La Línea de la Concepción (that now spreads to Gibraltar) and Algeciras, it has united the scattered surrounded coastal territories in an effort to create a trade base and secure the coasts against Rif pirates, but at this point it seems doomed to become an Algarvean appendage. Granada, which survived without a direct hit, was nonetheless almost depopulated in the Aftermath of the Fall. Now, an endtimes prophet with its own twisted vision of a revival of Al-Andalus has claimed it and plans to turn it into a shining beacon. But this well-organized, eccentric and sectarian dictatorship has competence. The Plastic sea of greenhouses around El Ejido survived relatively unscathed, even enjoying a slurpus of food supplies. Decades of hardships have turned the already tense agricultural and cultural relations there into a true, quite brutal slaveocratic republic of landlords. As for the Civil Authority of Guadix, it must be understood as the survival and reestructuring of the shire's municipalities thanks to the promotion and management of an already-existing habitational refuge -the traditional cave houses. More were built, and some of the existing ones were dug deeper. They became connected, increasingly self-sufficient, until becoming true vaults that provided security and care to all its denizens -just don't step too much out of the line or you're out and on your own.

THE CENTER

Central Portugal remains without stable government beyond the tribal and municipal. What was the Lisbon Metropolitan Area now stays eerily silent. And throughout this new Wild West, bedtime stories are told about how Setubal tried to carry the torch of what once was Lisbon and then was raided to the bone, in a cold and dark night, by an unknown force. If the Nova Lusitanians don't get into trouble with the Alliance of the North and its sphere, they might soon count with the numbers and the organization to start their march downwards, claiming authority over the decimated yet symbolic Coimbra. The Alentejans, in return, might advance northwards and consolidate themselves in Santarém.
Out of the claimants to the title of restored Spain, the paramilitary-fascistic New Dawn had one of the most promising starts, but as the bodies of imaginary and real enemies piled up, their behind-lines enemies became more palatable and efficient, gaining ground against them. Their last stronghold might not be long for this world.
To be honest, the fanatical, millenarian Church of Reigning christ, which expects the Second Coming to be already happening and doesn't recognize any -admitedly tenuous, all of them- of the current Papal authorities, can be trigger-happy in the moments of mass hysteria -to be more precise, they prefer hanging, though burning at the stake is not unheard of-, but they offer a communitarian network of solidarity and their farms bear fruit, so their armies are very disciplined and are proving themselves a tough nut to crack. To the north of what was Madrid, the surviving metropolitan emergency services have put together a certain normality -a more technocratic than democratic normality, an often rationed normality, but still-. To the south of what was Madrid, their normality came when an alliance of biker gangs, ranks filled by orphans and the destitute, put a swift end to all gang warfare in the area -a quite brutish normality, and even worse, they just won't shut up about the Siege of Toledo, the former raids, the latter spoils. Given their failure to secure the Madrid city remnants, their next big showdown might be against the Manchego Castilian Communards -unlike in Alentejo, in this one the farmers' assembly delegates themselves *are* the military junta, but just as with the Alentejans, don't expect more tolerance of dissent than the Church of Reigning Christ can offer. The plains are filled with mines, so whoever raids them should better not loose the strings. And surrounded by desert turned wasteland, a Zaragoza that was only partially hit, patched and walled, yet still a shadow of what used to be, survives as a self-styled city-state thanks to its transit hub condition -caravans moving between the Levant and the North, as much as Catalan refugees, prefer to cross the New City by the Ebro than venturing inside the volatile Central Warzones.
The Rising Star of the Meseta at the moment is the Reconstituted Kindgom. In all truth, the claimant is probably just one of the False Froilanes that started to pop out after most of the Spanish royals were wiped out during the Fall -just to start somewhere, he seems decades younger. Yet, unlike other go-getters, he really inspires people. His charismatic, tough but fair rule, his commitment to food plenty and local rights, a certain display of strategic savviness, have made many not to care and consider he's the future a new Spain deserves.

THE EAST

Catalonia is suffering one of the longest lasting conflicts the peninsula has seen in recent centuries. With the Fall and the destruction of Barcelona, the tensions already existing became borderline genocidal, and factionalism became intractable. The Tabarnese identity, which started as little less than a reactive meme in much less desperate times, became a rallying flag for those who still rooted for the lost country and heard the news about the False Froilán with hope, until it took life of its own. Make no mistake: it's a vicious Spanish-monolingual military junta that's charging real and imaginary grudges in a pound of flesh, and where just carrying any pre-fall Catalan political symbol might get you shot under charges of divisionism. Not an inch less vicious is the Insurrectionary Faction, those who want a Catalonia for blood-and-soil Catalans, vengeance against the national humiliators and zero concessions for enemies, which might include those who don't speak a Catalan pure enough. The Revolutionary Faction is the descendant of those who thought independence -later, the Fall- was a chance to start anew. The dysfunctional, paranoid and mobocratic nature of its territory is routinely handwaved as a result of civilizational collapse and the perpetual state of war in the land. The Legitimist Faction is the descendant of the old Generalitat, assimilationist and a parliamentary dictatorship in practice, just wishing it had it as easy as the Basques. Add Badalona to the lot, which declared itself a free territory and which acts as a neutral no man's land/wild everything-for-sale port in the middle of all this mess.
Not to talk the Balearic pirates. Isolation and bad winters made the local emergent authorities fully assume their nature and where their future was, and they fully went for it. This eventually prompted the local statelets in the Murcia and Alicante coasts to join against them. A fertile territory and a dense, relatively untouched population -very relatively: Murcia city didn't suffer a direct hit but it still heavily suffered from fallout effects- made it a successful commonwealth of interests that menaces to spread and become in the Mediterranean what the Alliance of the North became in the Atlantic.

Ultimately, some developments seem likelier than others now that the dust starts to settle. But it's a new era, and figuring out what lasting entities will emerge from this new world is impossible for the time being. Only now France, Morocco, Italy and Britain, or rather their weird new sucessor states, are starting to be accurately charted. Only now the news of places with many of the lost means of yore start to become more than rumors.Tras la Caída.jpg

Madrid Aeterna 3
Imperial Patada owes a lot to Calcio Fiorentino, yet diverges from it in significant ways, being in other aspects closer to it than to what we understand as football.

The main difference an OTL football aficionado might find is the literal arena, for it is played in a sand pitch usually measuring around 45x100 Varas -slightly below meters-; later, they may notice the absence of an out-of-bounds area, or even more probably, that both hands and feet are used.

The real difference in terms of gameplay, though, is the astounding level of contact this sport allows. It is still constrained by rules (you cannot sucker-punch nor kick in the head, you cannot punch/kick in the back nor someone who's lying on the floor, you cannot bite nor strangle, only one vs one fights are allowed unless one is in possession of the ball...), and the breakup of these rules grants a free penalty kick from the Línea de Gracia to the opposing team, but matches often show free-for-all levels of fighting.

Matches last one hour with a 10 minute rest after the first 30 minutes. In case of draw in ranked competitions, it is granted a five minute extension in which only captain vs captain play, and the first score earns the match. The start of the game, previous coin flip to choose sides, always involves a similar team position, with the ball in the Punto de Saque and the Captains facing each other in their respective initial points, strategy revolving around how that initial position is expected to evolve during play. There are two ways of scoring: one point if the ball reaches the opposite side of the field, but just if throwing/kicking from de Línea de Meta or beyond, and three points scoring a goal in the Garita -significantly smaller than a goal in OTL football-, which always must be done by kicking and from the Línea de Patada or beyond.

One of the main differences with Calcio Fiorentino is that movement is stressed over brawling. The greatly reduced number of players prevents a definite front to be formed, and makes the need for evasion and pass abilities to be more balanced respect to fighting skills and endurance. Still, professional Patada, which would put many a professional American football player into trouble, is not for everyone to play.

Timeball
My humble sketch around the Patada Imperial gave me enough impulse to make something a bit more dedicated, based on an idea for a sport I've been holding since I was a teenager and that could work in an alternate near future context, such as depicted in the graphic. It's a sport heavily based on contact, where the main form of scoring is continued possession of the ball. I might post the rules soonTimeball Liga.jpg

Mube Maso 2
Ernacius came with a unique graphic (please, check out Ernacius' work, it shows extremely high levels of talent in all aspects) that echoed ideas I tentatively had in mind for a Fascist Rwanda but never fleshed out myself. So, instead of his depressing and realistic-feel take, I went for a depressing and VERY over-the-top take to give it a context: A Rwandan Genocide that became an era-defining event. Consider it an extension of the Mube Maso flag graphic.

In this case, the total silence of the international community and an early killing of Paul Kagame made Rwanda both become THE Congo War and consolidate a Supremacist Hutu Republic with client states, a warm waterport and underground tendrils around the world regarding illicit activities, the hunt for their enemies, lucrative lost cargos which worth is often measured in megadeaths: War on Terror means a very different thing in this world. The International Community and the backers of the Rwandan side eventually understood what they had unleashed, and that it had to be isolated and contained (it's a world of integrated multipolarity in which Africa plays a bigger role), but the moral blow has been big enough that this world of healthier democracies (just ignore Lebedist Russia, please) and no pandemic doesn't feel like looking down on us.

I Was the Anal Slave of the Young Master
An extremely quick photomanipulation on a friend's idea that led to a conversation about history, Alternate History and literature, and thus I don't consider it related to my No Pasarán series, but more of a oneshot concept.
His premise is that a world where Republicans had won the Spanish Civil War could well have had a Nationalist Terror genre of smut literature, similar to the one that appeared in Israel around Holocaust porn, as a reaction to it being an adult, taboo topic disengaged from the present but within recent memory (there are things you just can't make up, go and look "Stalag fiction"). The dark joke implied in this case is that the salacious spicy stories depicted in another world's novels could only be seen as a revolting reality in our world.

El Arsenal del Libertador
The divergence that leads to this superpower Colombia doesn't lie in Colombia itself, but it starts in Spain before moving to Mexico. In this world, Spain ended the Peninsular War receiving a king heavily affected by a stroke, well before his marriage with Maria Cristina de Borbón-Dos Sicilias could have taken place, leaving a weaker monarchy much more dominated by much more Liberal Cortes -and a much harsher Carlist insurrection by the time the Treaty of Cordoba happens, which Spain, relatively more sensible and with bigger fishes to fry, accepts immediately ITTL. This results in a more cohesive and supported imperial Mexico that poses a much more direct threat to Colombia. And this forces some compromises between Bolivar and the Santanderinos that would not have been possible ITTL. This compromises would mark the uniqueness (not without imitators, often devolving into pure unipersonal dictatorship) of the Colombian System, combining a federal administrative framework with an electoral duumvirate-like hyper-presidential system, in which the vice-presidency is elected every few years and the presidency is elected for life.

As soon as this got Peru and Bolivia on board, it was clear enough that Brazil, Mexico, the United States and Gran Colombia -a denomination so extended that relatively few people know it's not an actual official name- would fight for supremacy over the continent. A fight Colombia would win by more effectively pouring resources into any continental insurrection it might find -by 1870, none of her foes even existed in their former shape. This would be even more evident in North America: the familiar fiefdom of Aaronia, the arid Mormon theocracy of Lehi-Nephi, the corporate state of the Hudson's Bay, the mystical-Unionist military dictatorship of Delmarva, the corrupt and Athenian-inspired New York, the Anglo-Spanish individualistic republics of Rio Grande and California, the tribal councils of Comancheria and Lakotah, the everything-for-sale Sonora, the wound-licking and puppetized but ultimately still angry and revanchist Mexico... the continent is a patchwork of polities played against each other so the Colombian military, industrial and economic global hegemony can't be overshadowed, at least not in their own backyard.

Colombia is a nation of compact yet packed and monumental cities, filled with neoclassical and neobaroque projects as well as viviendas fused with andine motives, often built to last, often in poor materials, where monumental beauty and monumental ugliness go hand in hand, and where the administrative quarters are often bigger and more striking than the financial ones (and for that matter, the Libertador Statue of Bolívar at Bogotá could well use the OTL Statue of Unity in India as a toothpick). The sharp divide between urban and rural living standards never really went away, the latter dominated by the large estate landlords and often under uncompromising natural conditions: this has contributed a constellation of metropolises hyperconnected both by rail and superhighways, surrounded by vast swathes of latifundio and a sort of inner frontier.

The Shen-Vogler Files
PRELIMINARY CLARIFICATIONS

Though there are much more in-depht analyses, the Shen-Vogler Files are considered the standard human encyclopedic taxonomy system when it comes to common divulgation of xenobiological, xenopsychological and xenosociological details of the sophont civilizations, particularly those who engage in starfaring civilization-building. It is so because it allows a bird's eye of the main traits one needs to know to get the general picture of a wide range of relevant xenodata, even in non-upgraded formats and even if it takes a familiarization with the pictographic nomenclature. In addition, these files were created, even admittedly so, with a human perspective and thus a human bias: the cathegories that non-human sophonts might find relevant about other sophont communities might be read in very different terms, and in some cases hard or even nearly impossible to accurately decypher.

INITIATION TO NOMENCLATURE

Green by default indicates traits corresponding to the subject of study, against a background color according to the analyzed traits: red for physiological information, blue for civilizational values with a teal subsection for the specific political system, purple for the astrological details of an inhabited body considered of reference. The file is completed by a basic briefing, a Kardashev measure of civilization power in its most basic sense, and a xenopsychological axis taken from the sophont's position in the Pradesh Scale and the Kuwale-Hopkins scale.
Top left includes an archetypical physiological and cultural model of the species at hand, top right includes a model of the cosmological body of reference with briefing (both models rotating and interactive in most formats), bottom right includes the most recognizable insignia the specific polity/civilization employs.

THE RED SCHEME
On top, the symbols arranged in a circumference signal whether the natural habitat of the species is ground, body of liquid, air, plasma or more than one at once. To its right it branches to the universal biochemical traits found between sophonts in opposing pairs, with the plasma crystal composition set apart: carbon vs silicon based lifeform, water vs ammonia based lifeform, phosphorus vs arsenic biocheminstry.
Below, a triangle indicates how many races, castes and genders the sophonts display in their baseline form, with an number for indication. In this case, we're dealing with a species that displays no castes, no races (the taxonomy deals with race in a rather biological sense, not in a social sense -should Neanderthals be around, Humans would appear as 2 or 2-C on race) and a gender continuum with two prominent cases, marked as two-continuum, 2-C. Below the triangle, there's an indicator of the sophont's symmetry, whether non-existent, bilateral, radial or spherical. Below, in a rhomboidal quasi-hierarchical distribution, the degree of sociality of the species: presocial, parasocial, eusocial or hypersocial, the latter referred to natural hive minds. Finally, the red scheme indicates whether the species follows an r or a K reproduction strategy.

THE BLUE SCHEME

The star pattern indicates the general ethical disposition of that civilization at the time of consulting. This is some times a matter of life and death: there's no scarcity of space and resources in the Milky Way whatsoever to justify the mobilization of energies required for starfare, and yet cultures destroy, capture and even creepily lurk at each other at relative frequence. The reason is never a matter of realpolitik, but how a community places itself on a scale of values.
The vertical scale indicates disposition towards other sophonts: from an attitude of supremacy on top, down to disdain or secretism, down to collaboration coupled to maintenance of their sophont species' chauvinism, down to a degree of xenophilia that ideally cares more about civilization as transmission than in physiological terms.
The horizontal scale measures the distribution of returns in the civilization's ethical code. From strict, often enforced universal returns on the left end, to recognition of universal returns to a degree, to the denial of universal returns, to the explicit rejection of universal returns. Most of our 2020 cultures would be placed second to the right in the Files, and most political experiments in our history, including left-wing ones, would be placed top right.
The northwest to southeast diagonal scale measures the degree of chauvinism about the civilization's own values. From a general state of anomy/epistemological nihilism, to the accepted idea that each sophont has its own adequate set of values, to the idea that there can be compromise with sophont values but there are things that cannot be tolerated, to a full proselytizing attitude towards the civilizational values. A proselytizing attitude coupled with a disposition of sophont supremacy on the vertical scale generally indicates a xenocidal civilization, but a nihilist-supremacist disposition often means just the same.
Finally, the northeast to southwest diagonal scale measure the degree of purity respect to baseline forms. From radical Edenite dispositions that can go genocidal on machines and augmentations, to bioconservative attitudes in which those are tolerated but subject to a lesser status, to a positive attitude to augmentations combined with a care not to lose an "original essence" that might be physical or abstract in nature, to a complete disdain and rejection of baseline forms.

Below the star-shaped pattern, an indicator of whether the civilization is unitary, federal or confederal in nature. Below it all, additional useful information about the sophont's background: whether they're the culturally dominant species of the civilization, whether they're a "stateless" species that has been fully or formally adopted by another sophont culture as citizens, whether they're under another sophonts' suzerainity, whether they're under other sophonts' direct territorial rule, whether they're been enslaved by other sophonts or created for enslavement (these four cases are marked in the Files by indicating the sophont's insignia above the insigia of the adoptive culture), whether they're "Promethean" or have supplanted the culture that created or enslaved them. Theoretically, many of those details can coexist at the same time.

THE PURPLE SCHEME

The main square displays three columns measuring the habitat's typology: from left to right they respectively refer to availability of liquid bodies, humidity and temperature. The top left indicates a world or artificial construct where bodies of liquid are the main medium and land support, if any, comes in the form of archipielagos. Medium left, a relative equilibrium between liquid and solid bodies: both our Earth and an Earth where the ratio of water and land were reversed would qualify as this. Bottom left, a barren world where permanent large bodies of water are at best scarce.
The top medium column idicates an environmentally arid habitat as predominant, down to an intermediate level of average humidity, down to what would appear as a tropical world to our standards (or a permanent blizzard world, if sufficiently cold). The right column deals with habitats from frozen, to temperate, to torrid for Human standards.
In addition, the top right margin displays, left to right, whether the world can be considered a political and administrative capital of the sophonts to study (it could not be the case if they're a subject people), and whether this is the sophonts' homeworld. Below, left to right, further details for consideration: Whether the habitat is a natural satellite, whether it is tidally locked, whether it is part of a hierarchical system (for example, in the orbit of a star of a binary system), whether it is artificially created, whether it orbits a black hole, and whether it is a plasma habitat.

THE TEAL SCHEME

Listing the forms of government that have been observed within the sophont stellar community into 25 comprehensive cathegories.
Protocolary autocracy is the form of single-individual rule that appeals to lineage or divine will. Most Ancient and Early Modern era monarchies would qualify as protocolary atocracies. The Gulf monarchies, even the consultive system of Oman, are protocolary by default.
Entrepreneurial autocracy is when a single entity who answers for an internal or external market monopolizes political rule over a territory. The Congo Free State and United Fruit Company/Chiquita International can be said to have engaged in entrepreneurial autocracy.
Gladiatoral autocracy, quite uncommon in Human history but not in other sophont histories and civilizations, grants rule to whoever can defeat the current ruler in a deathmatch.
Constituent autocracy is one grounded not in tradition, but in a call to enforcing a general order chanelled through personal will. Most human military and unipersonal right-wing dictatorships, as well as the Napoleonic continental system and the early Roman Empire, would qualify as constituent autocracies, but also many self-declared democratic states of 2020 would be treated by the Files as veiled constituent autocracies.
In an elective autocracy, an electoral body elects a ruler for life. Most historical elective monarchies, and some proposed presidential Republican systems, would qualify as this. Cambodia wouldn't, as the king doesn't hold enough power.
An automated autocracy delegates all decision-making in an AI protocol.
A theocracy is the form of oligarchy where the clergy, in behalf of a higher power, acts as the oligarchic element. In spite of many theocratic elements appearing in many protocolary autocracies, Human history is surprisingly lacking in that regard, the most notorious examples being Tibet and the Holy See (thus not an elective autocracy in the Files' terms).
Suicracy is just how the Files frame the political framework of a pure hive mind.
No self rule needs little explanation.
Manorial oligarchy is the rule of the few based on privileges granted by a network of mutual obligations between social estates. This is also widely known as Feudalism in Human history.
Managerial oligarchy is the rule of a clique whose interests and modus operandi revolve around the administrative tasks. China has been, during several periods of its history which include 2020, a managerial oligarchy, as have been most Marxist-Leninist countries, and as would be pure technocracies if there ever were one.
Entrepreneurial oligarchies work as a board of entities that act for an inner or external market. The old Italian merchant republics, the Hanseatic League, Ancapistan if it ever existed, would be classified by the Files as entrepreneurial oligarchies.
A darwinistic oligarchy is that which is constituted explictly for a subset of sophonts to prey upon others. The Confederate States of America, Nazi Germany, Apartheid South Africa and Democratic Kampuchea would be listed by the Files as darwinistic oligarchies.
Kritarchy is the rule by the judiciary. Acient Israel, Megacity One, you name it.
Stratocracy is citizenry by military service. Sparta, Starship Troopers, you name it.
A tribal council is a chamber of representatives of kinships, often with a kinship taking the lead, and in the context of the Files, specifically when said representation is charismatic in nature. Old Celtic social systems would count as this.
Demarchy election of rulers by sortition between the general political body. Quite rare in human history, but very present in other sophont civilizations.
Theodemocracy is an elected body that either upholds the principles of a higher power or in intertwined with the political power of the clergy. The Islamic Republic of Iran or the State of Deseret would count as such.
Representative democracy happens when the community delegates decision-making in elected representatives. If you're reading this, there are high chances you're living in one.
Participatory democracy is where the community directly or at least semi-directly involves itself in the political process. The Athenian precedent would count, as would Switzerland, if both very limited in their own ways.
A tribal democracy divides the political body in kinships just as the tribal council category, but the the kinship as a whole is consulted in the process. The Iroquois Confederacy would qualify as this.
A partnership democracy is one in which the political body is divided along material associations of interests -guilds, trade unions, you name it-. Should Council Communism have existed, it would count as a partnership democracy.
Hive democracy is a system which is generally laissez-faire politically speaking but in which, should a project or dilemma of collective importance emerges, parts or the whole of the community temporarily switch to an aggregate hive mind mode to engage in it.
Panarchy is a system in which political organization is voluntary and decentralized. Again, uncommon in Human space and very present in other spaces.
Rogue enterprise is a polity whose role is thriving on the customary limits of at least another polity, such a crime syndicate or a pirate organization would do. It has been stated that distinguishing them from entrepreneurial autocracies is problematic, though rogue enterprises tend to present a greater level of integration and active involvement of all their members.

OTHER INDICATORS

The Kardashev scale measures the energy consumption of a civilization, level I corresponding to all the energy of an Earth-like homeworld, II to all the energy of a Sun-like star, and III to all the energy of our galaxy.
The Kuwale-Hopkins scale vis-a-vis the Pradesh scale is a simple glance at a sophont's basic psychological disposition: though psychological types and axiological trends are generally highly influenced by physiological and environmental background, they're often shaped by a variety of indirect and subtle factors, and this gets better understood through a compared lecture of the chart. Kuwale-Hopkins measures the openness of the space of possibilities (that is, psychological malleability and adaptation), while the Pradesh scale measures the average degree of connection between the self and the sensory imput: a Pradesh level 0 would mean extreme individuation to the point of derealization, while a Pradesh level 10 would mean selflessness to the point of depersonalization. It should be noted that the Pradesh scale does not mean hive minds get 10, for pure hive minds share the psyche of a single individual, who can score any number in the scale according the limits of its xenopsychological disposition.

......................................................................................................................................................................

Human-based civilizations are amongst the newest of the Young Sophonts group. Throught their history, metarreflection on the Human condition has typically taken two forms: the destructive, unbalanced nature of humanity, worthy of outer punishment, or the ingenuity and adaptability of the Human species, that would make it prevail: it rarely merited reflection that it was the Human sophont community the one making both judgements posing as an outer judge, and how this offered hindsight about human traits, and still both offered a hint of truth, if they don't quite match the view the sophont stellar community often has of the Human sophont community.
Physically speaking, Humans are a chordate, low-dymorphic, bilaterally symmetric and relatively flexible apex predator who actively and passively wiped out all homeworld opposition to their status not long time before their early civilization processes. They belong to that relatively uncommon form or organism in which the inseminated individuals host the gestating offspring completely inside their bodies, producing feeding serum through glands during and after the process. Humans are also a naturally omnivorous predator, though a myriad of dietary, cultural and moral reasons can make a human to reject almost any given source of food, the dietary consumption of other humans being one of the deepest, most ingrained taboos in all Human cultures. Maybe one of the most striking facts about Humans is the fact that, though all baseline healthy humans are expected to develop a full sophont status, their offspring comes upon birth completely dependent for long periods in which they have to go through a long complex acculturation process before they can fully integrate their sophont community. The most apparent and striking trait to most outsiders, though, is their relatively smooth surface that abruptly ends in a concentation of filament-like folicules as one gets closer to their sensory direction centers: common derogatory expressions about humans are almost by default compare them to brush-like tools. Humans live in degrees of communal life, yet often with a distinct separation between communal units, and with specialization of tasks, like most things Human, not being a fixed matter. Their early processes of Neolithic accumulation entrenched several aspects of their tribal impulses into their civilizations, prompting forms of sexual and social hierarchy that only have started to fade in the course of the last few centuries. This has less to do with Human psychology (adaptive but not the most adaptive, individuated and yet fundamentally cooperative, territorial and yet generally uncomfortable with the effects of a territorial mindset and struggle) than with the environmental conditions that prompted this very psychology.

At first glance, Sol-III is a standard intermediate planet, perfectly fit for the convergent model of life in all aspects. A closer investigation will notice the extreme conditions at the ends of the averages, the spectacularly limited ecological niche and the delicate equilibrium that is, at geological scales, interrumpted by ecocidal waves of extinction. Sol-III is, in fact, a quite anomalous planet: in Human terms, a Death World superficially disguised as a Paradise World. There shouldn't be the brutal fight for spoils that goes on there, but there is. There shouldn't be so much default scarcity, but there is. As such, many sophont cultures consider Human psychology, to a degree the Files themselves don't fully capture, truncated. All species Sophonts need to feed, reproduce and develop strategies to defend themselves from natural predators, but what consitutes feeding, a natural predator and a viable survival strategy is a wildly conditional and variable matter. In the Human case, that has meant something uncannily close to Death World competiton dynamics. As a species, they have spent all of their history rationalizing its habitat's nature and their own impulses with one appendage and desperately trying to mend them with another, slowly succeeding at times, causing spasms of untold suffering at others. By the time of access to the sophont stellar community, most of humanity seems to have succeeded, in its own Human, truncated way. The Second Forum, which filled the gaps in the failure of the UN and the transnational organizations under their umbrella, is an feverish mosaic of polities and associations, of faiths and fashions, of controlled biomes and bioluministent new species, of stellar diplomats and refugees, of minds entering machines and machines entering minds, of deafening noises and blinding lights, where deterritorialization runs more rampant than ever. It would be called positively cyberpunkish by an outer observer, but post-cyberpunk is closer to the truth: collective agoras of deliberation down to the semi-automatic workplaces are part of the consensus, and economically speaking it takes the form of a semi-artificially enforced single-currency market economy with massive, polycentric and networked welfare systems delivered by corporate leisure conglomerates. Participation in said conglomerates, digeracy and social clout determine capital and power flow. The philosophical disposition of the Forum is straightforward for Human standards: once equilibrium and survival are granted, anything goes. Tensions between xenophile and xenophobic attutudes -towards sophonts- define political fault lines, in a consensus context of conditional coexistence and asylum, and a moderate Transhumanist approach that pushes towards the limits of what means to be human but still worries about not breaking said limits.

At the time of reporting, the Second Forum comprises the bulk of the Human sophont community and the attitude towards the polities it has interacted with has been best described as an ambivalent process of trade and alliance-building, not exempt of circumstancial and existential enemities. Note the resemblance of the Forum's flag to that of The Gambia as nothing but an anecdotal coincidence some history nerds bring up from time to time.
The Forum Fleets pride themselves in being a defensively armed and networked chamber of spokespeople and nothing else. But in a typically human fashion, the reality has more folds and shadows. The sopont community's more common view is that Humans are fundamentally an insidiously cunning species filled with layers upon layers of ulterior motives, and it's just natural they are like that forged in the deceifully hostile environment of Sol-III. For this reason, Humans are quite valued within the sophont community as diplomats, spies and covert operations agents. The truth is the "chamber of spokespeople" is feared, not without a reason. One does not not forge a stellar civilization and a position of prestige in less than two centuries just taking chances.

Not to tell the Second Forum isn't the only Human stellar civilization out there.

Ciudadanos del Reino
Note: what follows is a political fiction exercise and doesn't represent any real political movement, at the time of posting and God willing.

Most Sovereign Citizen movements around the world could be described as the view of the State as a contractual spell that disappears if you pronounce the right incantations. In the Spanish case, that incantation goes at follows: The April 12 1931 municipal elections didn't take into account the little electoral force Republicanism had in rural Spain and weren't a legal plebiscite on the monarchy, so the proclamation of the Second Republic was illegitimate. As every subsequent political regime has made its way, by reform or by force, through faits accomplis and without taking that original illegitimacy into account, there's a lasting void of State legitimacy from 1931 to this day: the 1876 constitution still has force of law but is not being enforced, and every true patriot is thus on their own in its defense. In practice, this means both a refusal to recognize any form of modern legislation, the refusal to pay taxes to the "usurper kindgom" (they tend to back Luis Alfonso de Borbón as the rightful king of Spain, for they perceive current line has betrayed its duty. Luis Alfonso himself has declined to comment), and a degree of adherence to one of the many scattered "Interim Presidents of the Council of Ministers" that act as radicalization agents and LARP as Spanish leaders in inner exile.

The Spanish momevent of Ciudadanos del Reino isn't unlike its Reichbürger homologue in more than one sense: falling in that spot where Libertarianism and far-right Nationalist ideas collide, it's often scorned both by the most traditional far-right movements and -at least officially- by emerging National-Conservative movements such as Vox. And yet, it still poses real security concerns: the average Ciudadano del Reino is a male in his forties, socially isolated in real life and trapped inside a conspirative feedback loop via social media, resented both in his masculinity and his economic status. The ideas under which the Ciudadanos del Reino operate, paired with their background, make them potential perpetrators of so-called "lone wolf" terrorist attacks, which makes the CNI -the Spanish intelligence services- to keep a close eye on them.

Reason on a Pickup Truck
A common 'yer dad' topic I hear is how Muslim civilization never had an Enlightenment, so I wanted to turn that topic upside down a bit by taking it to its natural consequences. Let's say the waves of history went in a predetermined direction and majority-Muslim countries needed to mechanically pass through the historical phases Europe did. It would practically follow that sooner or later a Napoleon will appear there -maybe a Middle Eastern Napoleon.
So far I like how the map suggests things, so I'm not revealing anything about the backstory.

12 Murcias
"Four things has Murcia,
and may God spare me of three:
The hospital and the jail,
and the Holy Inquisition"

-Traditional couplet

"Kill the king and go to Murcia"

-Proverb

A1: Qartalebine Braid, 1894-Present.

The Phoenician civilizations have had times of rise and fall, but in some way or another, they've dominated the Mediterranean cultural space for millenia. Names like Tyre, Carthage, Qart Hadast, Finike, Qartalebo, pass through time, the latter dominating not just the Mediterranean space, but the metropolitan goods exchange network of urban cores -Qartalebo being itself a city and the host of a particularly dense metropolitan exchange network- and the space of electric simulacra they extend. One is not without the other, all need of a cooperation that pretends to sustain itself, and they all share the name of The Braid.
Now, you're probably saying: "Well, I'm from Utica and I've never heard anyone use the phrase 'Qartalebo'". In A1, they have. It grew at the shadow of Qart-Hadast many centuries after it, in a valley propense to flooding and Nile-like in qualities, as a center of accounting and supply that would not suffer the raids of the enemy cities' privateers. Not only it overshadowed Qart-Hadast itself: from the original valley, what remains is nothing but a labyrinth of private parcels of gardenry intertwined with a colossal sprawl that creeps along the roads, the ports, the subsidiary villages, that needs other worlds in the sky and other braids to subsist, and even just to not choke and poison itself in its own need for more, first as the true center of the world, then as an attempt to supplant it.

A2: País Murcià, 1982-Present.

He may be buried in Poblet, but the heart of Jaume I The Conqueror rests in the Cathedral of the Murcia he gained and secured for the Crown of Aragon. But what kind of place earned such a gift? Some people still mistake Murcia for a Mini-Valencia, but they're wrong. Surpassing even Valencia in literary tradition and enjoying popular floral games in its own Renaixença, it's nothing but natural that it remains a bulwark of Murcian language, as the local Catalan variety is known. Murcian is lexically close to Valencian with even greater presence of Arabic borrowings, but the difference really lies in its pleasantly musical sound, of proto-tonal functions. The gracious and Elven-like accent of the Murcians, even when speaking Castilian, is certainly the most admired and imitated in all of Spain, and it is often said it can make even the ugliest person look sexy. So it is quite understandable that their Regionalist, at times Nationalist pride, never devolved into a clash between Pancatalanists and Blaveristas like in Valencia, because it is a false dichotomy for them: Devoid of complexes and identity crises, Murcians know they are a part of the Catalan-speaking family and know they're a distinct part of Spain. Their Statute of Autonomy was even corrected and revised in 2004 to include a reference to the Murcian national reality without much of a fuss, but that only was possible as at the time there was a People's Party government looking the other way; today, while the region remains overwhelmingly Unionist, most look at what has happened in Catalonia with noticeable empathy -Catalonia has always admired Murcians and treated them with utmost dignity and brotherhood, so it's just natural. Murcia has evolved from a Conservative Desarrollismo to a more plural political environment where the right and the left turn, with the Regionalists and Nationalists of Sud-est En Peu often as kingmakers, and a residual presence of Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya.

A3: El Carmen Commune, 1985-Present.

The 1873 premise of not accepting any Republic that wasn't built by arms from the vicinity upwards was a particular kind of intransigence, and the 1936 premise of embracing a new world to the point of demanding a cathartic, often murderous act of physical destruction of the old was another form of intransigence. In El Carmen neighbourhood, at the lower marging of the Segura river, both mixed up during the course of the Civil War. It would be arduous to detail the psychological and social factors that made a group of revolutionary exalted from several Communist and Anarchist syndicates to do what they did in 1937, and why the neighbors collaborated so enthusiastically: They built barricades first at both sides of El Carmen -called several names during its First Commune period, such as Barrio de la Pasionaria, Barrio de Malatesta, Bielorrusia del Segura and just Barrio del Carmen again-. To the north lay the river; to the south, the easily blockable path of the railway. The city of Murcia, part of a war effort and a with lot of shit on its plate, would not try to retake its main and lost outer neighbourhood with its full capabilities, allowing a Carmelitan narrative of heroic resistance. Choking the neighbourhood didn't work either: it was too close to fertile orchards and it controlled one of the main train stations. The commune itself would work as a chaotic council of exalted and misdirected communal fervor in which the small size helped the organization and not being a priest helped a lot to survive. It persisted even when Colonel Casado cut short the excesses of the wartime Republic, and when Franco's troops finally came, Murcia had to be taken by a sizable aerial and land force, El Carmen giving a fierce fight and being the very last part of the Spanish social experiment to fall.
This instigated harsh punishment measures during Francoism, and the Commune period became a hidden but very present marker of the nighbourhood's identity: many would tell you, just not in the open, that their place was somewhere else than the city. Years later, with communal symbols legal and visible, industrial reconversion and the heroin epidemics hitting hard the Murcian economy, and discontent so high that goddamn Herri Batasuna had been the most voted party in the district, it wasn't surprising when El Carmen finally went for a Round 2 and even sent delegations for Castro and Gaddafi to endorse them. After some clashes, it was solved in the less tragic way: by denying there was a problem at all. So they're still de facto independent, just without recognition. In either case, times changed and its character of oddity would end up meaning gentrification, later full hipsterization, as magic mushrooms and coffee shops replaced needles, and the almost centennial, precarious dwellings ridled with bullet holes and the social housing blocks of the late Francoism got filled with neohippie murals and artistic graffitis. Nowadays, the Commune is mainly politically active in trying to suspend the city works around the underground train pass: the train must keep passing on surface, lest El Carmen loses its distinctive insularity.

B1: Hydraulic Commonwealth, 2056-????

It wasn't war, nor disease, nor even catastrophic climate change, though they all played a certain part in the aftermath of the Switchoff: it was a ripple in the Sun, a long geomagnetic storm unseen since even before the Carrington Event that plunged us into a new Dark and No-Signal Age. And out of the new authorities that reclaimed Iberia after the Switchoff, the Hydraulic Commonwealth was the most ruthless and brutal, as well as one of the least ideologically mobilized and the rawest in its pragmaticism. The Southeast was one of the main clusters of population of the Peninsula, one suject to increasing desertification turning into famine and dustbowls, the water decanting systems of the Old Spain falling into disrepair. They had to be secured by force: water must flow. The idea was simple, as it was the identity -the Hydric Nationalism of the lost years turned into a vertebrating creed by sheer force of the faits accomplis-, and the powers that sustained them -The old River Basin Confederation and the surviving agroindustial and corporate subsidiaries that profited from intensive irrigation, now from a fragile subsistence equilibrium among the rust and dust of the barren fells-. Communities under suzerainity are kept on a leash, adding force of work, levies and drafted recruits to the Decanting Brigades in exchange for partaking in the rationed Pax Hydraulica and their healthy silence about the way things are done and about who killed the world they know. Survivalist, devoid of friends, land-hungry and basin-thirsty, the question is not when the Hydraulic Commonwealth is going to stop, but who's gonna stop it.

B2: Murcian Soviet Socialist Republic, 1922-1999

It's true that the odds were not really in favor of the Canton Murciano, but little the radical decentralizators who instigated it knew that its fate was to be subject to foreign powers for more than a century. First annexed by a Bismarck who saw their declaration of war and thought "It's free real estate", then by its own accord as a result of the Great War, when Moscow really seemed like the center of the world and the nascent Union of Assemblies seemed like the future motherland of all workers. Its location, far from Moscow and close to the Western colonial powers and an Irredentist and humiliated Spain, made people think it was not long for this world, but those who tried to invade the by-then fortress enclave, no cliff and no range devoid of cannon batteries and concrete layers, had the bad habit of imploding in a civil war or being dragged into a world war more destructive than the former. By the time the Soviets backed their presence in the Mediterranean with atom bombs, people outside refused to do more than containing Soviet pretensions of reaching Lorca and Albacete, and Murcians went from fighting to rebuilding, high-density and high-rise concrete rising over the meadows - a Socialist realist staute of Antonete Gálvez crowned the Monteagudo Castle, and the Stalinist wedding cake that was the Polytechnical University of Cartagena seemed to defy the Cathedral of the valley. Here, the New Men and Women brewed vodka infused with aniseed and lemon peel, chain-smoked Belomorkanal resenting how flavorless and soft it was, developed a knowlegde or passive competence of Russian language that gave birth to one of the weirdest dialects of the Multiverse. But above all, the NKGB worked extra hours there. Agents of all known intelligence agencies; Soviet reformists and hardliners, and Liberal dissidents; Communist, Fascist and Liberal Spanish Unionists; Communist, Anarchist and Liberal Neo-Cantonales -probably Fascist Neo-Cantonales too, at least enough to fill a table-... all of them had plans for the enclave, all of them hid their intentions, anyone could be one of them.

B3: Bailiwick of the True Cross, 1679-Present.

Even considering how syncretic thoughts and ceremonies flourish in the lands directly administered by the Order of Solomon's Temple, the lands of the Vera Cruz are somewhat an oddity. In theory, a bastion of Christendom surrounded by the multiconfessional Res Publicae of Garnata, Toledo and Valencia, except Christendom here comes in flavors either Orbital, Specular or Fraternal, with allegiances to the dozens of popes and rites out there, at times hardly distinguishable from ideas we could call Liberal Capitalism, Positivism, Socialism, Post-Structuralism, National Mysticism. The line officially followed the the Bailiwick and the one that enjoys most popularity venerates a fragment of the True Cross allegedly brought by angels inside an ornate form. A small-vehicle-like faith of social vertebration as it is, the allegation of miraculous properties of the Cross has grown with time until it has become a true form of idolatry in which the relic itself takes the form of an increated, eternal aspect of the Christian God -at its most derivative, the Christian God has been disposed entirely. Living off money lending and offshore banking for the semi-free polities of the world like the other bailiwicks do, turning its totemic symbol into a niche brand that fuels what we could call a wholesale Toys'R'Us of iconolatry, the land thrives. The True Cross rules from the shrine above, and the shrine rules over the old and bustling city of Caravaca, where the grudgingly-tolerated and quite lucrative chapter of the Order rules over the earthly matters of the territory. Money and ideas flow, insitutions ossify, speaking ill of the Cross is a terribly bad idea.

C1: Islamic Republic of Mursiyya, 1928-Present.

Mursiyya has known worse times, and yet its situation is dire if we compare it to the really prosper emirates and republics of the Peninsula -Batalyaws, Tulaytula, Ishbiliya, Daniya, Leyyun. Those eventually found lasting political dynasties and even set commercial ventures in Europe and even modest overseas outposts at times -instead, it could be said that, in Mursiyya, the Fitna never ended, it just found an apparent political truce with the advent of its current republican form after the contenders to the Summer Palace and the families they sustented bled themselves to death for the Nth time. Its consultive mechanisms were nothing of the sort, but set in motion a heavy form of political pillarisation that was already felt in shouts and gunshots inside the twists and turns of its streets. It was felt as a success, as the rivaling Arab families, the Berber clans, the Mozarabic groups of interests all agreed on a degree of rotating participacion and control, even when some of then were still more equal than others. In practice, territory itself, with its historical enclaves in a conflict the neighbors wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, reflected a national turf war on a standstill. Even afterwards, some fool would break the codes from time to time, some tragic unavoidability would take place, maybe just some intractable disagreement by the official channels, and the streets would speak with bullets again. It's bound to happen, though, because the Islamic nature of the republic doesn't mean the religious rigor and the zeal of the Neo-Fatimids down south. Of course civil disputes are solved by sharia courts (and boy, there are quite a few civil disputes) but what's in the name is how the Muladi groups, subject to distrust and all sorts of theories about their natality and how they can replace and christianize Mursiyya, are kept down and out. You can see their slogans in the walls, and at times, you can hear the bombs they plant under the vehicles. Still, it's the closest to a social peace this impoverished corner of Al-Andalus has found. At least until the demographic equilibrium between groups really alters, the precarious economy plummets under the institutionalized corruption, or both. Then, all the pieces of the land will speak.

C2: VENVS MVRCIA, ????-Present.

You could draw a scalene triangle over the orchards around the city of Murcia, with its vertices located under Alfonso X's heart sepulchre (heavily patrolled from the nearby Royal Casino, which secretly extends downwards), the Monastery of Los Jerónimos and the Hell Chasm of Monteagudo. Those are the main entrances to a labyrinth of connected and growing underground corridors and halls, like a mockery of the irrigation channels above. The corridors creep pushing to spread towards the fourth crucial point -The shrine that guards over the Chain Pass and keeps the True Fuente Santa- because VENVS MVRCIA, already near the apex of her power, knows she'll be invincible afterwards. She was here long, long ago, when the valley was visibly a swamp, but she's way older. In signaled days, the entrepreneurial and political caciques of the area put on their huertano dresses and their black hoods, and enter the labyrinth to comply with the grotesque rituals that are most pleasing to VENVS MVRCIA, in exchange for favors. Due to her nature, the more ascended you are, the more deluded about who she is: they think it's the embodiement of fertility, growth and plenty they're courting, but many don't even see something suspicious in their benevolent goddess having too many eyes, too many pincers, too many udders, definetely way too many hooves. The gifts she concedes serve her to raise her underground army: rats that look like ducks and ducks that look like rats, the corpses of the dead caciques and bishops turned into lich kings, amorphous neocatechumenal families excreting newborns like a machine gun vomits bullets, small owners with fangs around their massive bellies and dewlaps, infestations of lemon-like polyps, prostitutes passed on like a joint to seal accords and later turned into mummified succubi, golems made of bouncer meat. For VENVS MVRCIA is the primordial goddess of laziness and apathy, and her gifts always carry a rot. As gifts of power, they allow a temporary degree of control over the powerful stream of Zarangollovisión she extends over the land. And Zarangollovisión is her greatest weapon: a distortion of reality that fills yours eyes with Zarangollo and makes you think the crumbs of well-being in the city and the region make it a hidden paradise, that all problems are solved with a beer and a marinera in an Instagram-friendly bar, that those who say something is wrong are Anti-Murcian traitors and those who mock it from outside are envious or malicious conspirators. And so she slowly leads the region towards the crumbling putrefraction she holds dear, stagnating and fattening, slowly becoming one with the land. Murcia must be freed from VENVS MVRCIA, but that means going deep into the dungeons, and all those who tried either never returned or have been forever tranformed by the power of Zarangollovisión.

C3: Grand Duchy of Los Vélez, 1744-Present.

The Safest Key of the Kingdom became bigger than the door long ago, even after there was nothing to guard anymore. The Marquisate got more land, gained duchal privileges, gained its right to sit in the Segura Basin City, gained its unlimited hold over its lands while Spain bled dry in wars abroad, succeeding by pen where the Dukes of Medina-Sidonia couldn't by sword. The surname Fajardo inspires fear here, as well as awe in the light of its vertical, concrete-and-steel Mannerist works that make cities and tows look like lewd oases in the arid plains. And not just because of the Grand Duke, who simply watches over the charade of the Concejos and the Cartas Otorgadas. Wherever there's a university, a sports team, a private security conchabía, a pulpit, a pressure brotherhood of friends, a court, a gazette, a bank, a mount of piety, a hospice, a vineyard, a construction cartel, a factory holding or a ranch, you can be sure the surname Fajardo will show, at the very least once. If you scratch a bit more you'll find behind the drug mobs, the smuggling of the docking colleges and the hidden creeks, the clandestine barber shops, the houses of rendezvous, the game parlors, the matasiete and the wheeler conchabías, the surname is there, often with the same first names attached. Only the prostitutes of the Arrixaca Vieja have managed to pact a well-earned truce that takes them out of the reach of the Putero Mayor del Ducado, a Fajardo himself. But even them know nobody needs to scratch that much about who's who because everybody knows, and nobody wants to know out in the open, and whoever scratches is trying to bring things out to the open, and a dirty consciousness is a formidable source of power you don't want to disturb. The powers that be will debase and destroy you in ways you cannot suspect before your remains join the desert or the sea. Lie low and keep your integrity if this dry land allows you, or by an act of divine providence, be on the radar and keep yourself relavitely untarnished. But don't expect to win. Who wins and who loses has been set already.

D1: INEXCARM Panel, 2029-????

The Mar Menor crisis was one of the first serious social points of rupture in the Murcia Region since the People's Party started its decades-long rule in the area. The lagoon's euthrophization at the expense of an extractive agricultural model that made very little for the Murcian economy but was very close to the centers of power was a sentimental blow, and also jeopardized the way of life, the little credibility and ultimately, the entire economy and sustainability of any decent living in the region. And yet, at the same time, the regional political inertia, with a comfortably numb opposition and decades of feeding the most reactionary elements within a pervasive clientelar network, made any non-denialist option impossible to articulate any significant form of political power. Like a mini-Earth, Murcia had created a suicidal inertia. When the popular initiative to give juridical personhood to the lagoon failed, tension reached new heights, and the powers that be thought Ayuso's presidency assured things, but the effects of the climate and political crisis in the world and the ecocide in the lagoon didn't understand of power transfers. Murcia started to see episodes of street violence that a decade prior were more associated to Catalonia, except the bulk of protestors were the ones asking for the suspension of their own autonomy, and they wanted it permanent. Though a motion of no-confidence brought down Ayuso in 2025, it took many years until the commision of investigation opened by the presidency of Marc Pons allowed to do just that. The autonomous institutions of Murcia were dissolved, the coalition regional government was detained and, instead of setting new regional elections, a panel of environmental scientists, urban planners, automation engineers and tax researchers, directly answering to the Delegation of Government and swiftly taking over the municipalities, took charge sine dine -The Panel of Outer Intervention of the Autonomous Community of the Murcia Region, the INEXCARM for short. Between its first measures was a delimitation of areas of special intervention: Cartagena, the Mar Menor and its area were a given, but the Nortwest Area and parts around the Ricote Valley also were designated as such, to be subject to draconian Preservationist and reforestation measures. And so were the Altiplano and the Northwest, subject to an ambitious desertification reversal plan, while the coast between Águilas and Mazarrón was expected to reduce and contain the pressure of urbanization. Murcians still being able to vote in any other instance -including, in theory, the municipality-, they had been subject to the first Technodemocratic experiment in the world almost by tragedy and almost by accident. Illiberal and corrupt in its own ways as it was, it wouldn't by far be the last.

D2: Satrapy of Bigaztrid, 1161-Present.

Four Noble Truths about the wheel of Dharma came to dominate the spheres of civilization: their spread westards came by the sword, first to Persia, then via the Iranian invasions that feasted on the long agony of Rome. But the further away from the birthplace of the Gautama, the weirder they got, and in Ispahanistan's case, they reached a syncretic accord with the worship of the Krishtós, considered a privileged bridge between the Gautama and the Maitreya to come, visited by the Mahabrahma. Bigaztrid became one of the main centers of peregrination of the West Wind Blow, and while centuries went by and the Ispahanistani dynasties adopted orthodox revivals, left-hand-path schools disproportionatly grown out of revolts between the Humiliardi, finally the Nai-Lokaiata streams -the weightless materialistic schools of the latter centuries- Bigaztrid remained a fairly rural and pious place tied to the Krishtani schools of yore, maybe not that diferent from how the Shikoku region is perceived IOTL in Japan. Still, it would be a great mistake reducing Bigaztrid to a culturally stagnant satrapy of Ispahanistan, for it is a place where the Loom Wars rage with intensisy under the surface. All over the world, influenced by the growing urbanization, well-being achievements and acceleration of the eras, the idea that the endless cycle of rebirth is actually a gift is catching on. To those semi-organized, often full-clandestine and at times conspirational Schools of Rescue, Enlightenment is annihilation and a refusal of the gift and nothing else, and the schools or the Gautama are plain and simple metaphysical death cults that must be resisted; humanity must be saved and the paths towards so-called "Enlightenment" must be stopped: No Boddhisattva will be spared. In Bigaztrid, the Schools of Rescue are as well-hidden as they are numerous. The new generations are increasingly discontent with the enforced pastorality of Bigaztrid, and Bigaztrid is a sacred land, and sacred lands are usually the places where faith goes to die, if at times, between shadows.

D3: Community of Todmiria, 1979-Present.

Antonete Gálvez came from his exile in Oran changed: the kind of things he said in his comeback, in a time where Costumbrismo was at its height, found ears between Murcians of all social extractions, writers like Vicente Medina to articulate them, newspapers to difuse them. If something had proven the episode of Cantonalismo, it was that the kind of democratic liberties Murcia demanded were an integral part of its identity. The area was articulated by the need for pact from the times of Teodomiro: Pacts between urban spaces, pacts between irrigation communities. Spain could not provide unless, at the very least, recognized the singularity of Murcians -from now on, in Regionalist and Nationalist circles, known as Todmirians, as the region was defined in a Murcia-Cartagena-Lorca axis. It was the most expected of happenings, then, that the province of Murcia was one of the places that got its statute of autonomy during the Second Republic, and that his political life would be dominated by the Partido Federal Todmirio already at the time, as it would be after Francoism; it was not less common than the most dissafected from that party turned violent during the last dictatorship, and that the climate of disaffection coupled with that of extortion and intransigence created by the BBCC, the ruthless Brigadas Cantonales, were only amplified after Todmiria got back its autonomy -something that never spread to the Basque Country, for Sabino Arana, wary of the Murcian developments and a domino effect in a Vizcaya full of Maketos, turned up to eleven the Traditionalist elements of his discourse at the expense of others. As for Todmiria, it spent the first decades after the comeback of democracy under a torn-apart, deah-toll-heavy form of culture war in which station channels and reunion places barely crossed each other, the time of the party-sponsored Barracas Federales and the financing spots in the mural-heavy Tascantones; where being part of a Spanish source of authority, expressing pro-Spanish sympathy, entering politics except under the umbrella of Enza Cantonal, or susciting envy in the wrong environments, could be a death sentence. Only after years of dirty war, compromises of cooperation from what what had been the Moroccan and Gibraltarean havens, periods of appeasement and some fatal blows, with Todmiria being at the brink of militarization it its worst moments, it was managed to force the disbandment of the BBCC. Disaffection towards Spain is high in Todmiria, and a good third of the population has explicit desires of independence, but the worst seems over: the BBCC doesn't condition the Todmirian political life anymore and its pressure is fading away even from radicalized municipalities such as Archena and Torre Pacheco. Full social reconciliation will still take some time, and many people at a national level will never trust the credentials of the Cantonal ticket Ajuntaera, nor will forget what the Cantonal ticket has left in its trail.

Some Lit Uplands
This scenario is partly an excuse to introduce tongue-in-cheek childish humor, because why not. Its premise, though, is a seriously divergent cultural and political path for the British Isles -In a "not necessarily better nor worse, just different" sense-, starting from a seemingly minor POD: the Anglo-Saxon invasions included a substantial Frisian substract.
This increased the competition for settlement and made the first centuries substantially bloodier, something of which the Norse and the Brythonic tribes managed to take a comparative advantage. There was never an equivalent of an Angevin dynasty in this world, and the polities that consolidated in the Middle ages in what came to be called the Thulian Islands were more numerous and culturally divergent between one another; a patch of kingdoms, aristocratic republics and chieftain federations, united by trade and at times at war, with Thulian Frisian as a prestige language that eventually pushed forward the Hansa-like Enspannings Unjoon, the Endeavoring Union.
Ireland is divided between the republic of Ailech, bulwark of the Gaelic cultural space in the north, and the southern Kingdom of Yverland -as Danish Pikternland, fully norsefied as of today. The confederal Brythonic kingdom of Britaynn is a proud and insular nation that keeps opting out of the EU; it takes care of the defence of the Damn County, home of the Damnii, where a weird Brythonic/Norse creole culture has taken hold, and a place that takes special pride in its old-fashioned but efficient railroad network. Cornuvia is an Oil-Speaking maritime nation with strong Norman influences, and the Covenant of Nosex is a pious and a bit dull place where Anglo-Saxon culture persists. Though Britaynn and especially Ailech can compare, the powerhouse of the Endeavoring Union is the Republic of Uswetland, Frisian-speaking and dominating the interoceanic trade routed from the mouth of the Thames, not far from the archeological remains of Londinium.
Bound by frenemity, free from post-imperial hangover unlike the former global empires of Angloscania, Normandy and Cantabria, the merchant nations of the northern islands are expected to keep thriving in the future as long as competition doesn't lead to miscalculation.

The 2024 US Election was AOC vs Donald Trump. Having suffered badly in the midterms and with an aging POTUS, the 2024 Democratic presidential primaries were the final straw for an aging and dissatisfying partisan consensus. As for Trump... at that point, he simply had no real contender. The elections were presented as (yet again) decisive and polarizing. Heavily contested in several key states, AOC won by an even narrower margin that Joe Biden had four years before. A significant part of the GOP and its voting base called voting fraud; most, but crucially not all of the US Army accepted the electoral results. Protests turned into civil clashes and acts of rebellion that put the 2021 Capitol attack to shame. Texas went beyond denying the validity of the results and declared a provisional emergency government. Two irreconcilable ways out of a decades-long global path faced off. The Second American Civil War had begun.

Jibung-In
Name: Jibung-In

Population: 1.920.000

Languages: Korean -locally called Jibunggeo-, English

Ancestry: Korean, and still considered the main part of the Korean diaspora.

Region: United States, some presence in Canada and Australia.

Religion: Majority non-believer, with significant Evangelical Protestant and Buddhist communities.

Culture: Regarded by some, including many among the Jibung-In community themselves, as the Third Korea, after the Northern and the Southern republics that ideologically divide the Mother Country. Some things set them apart -their accent and slang has become its own form of vernacular. From their radio stations and their TV and streaming channels, they broadcast a certain form of audiovisual entertainment which in many ways echoes cinéma verité and Dogma 95 as much as it echoes more conventional soap operas, and a kind of music that, if you ignore the peculiar rhapsodic structure, has much more to do with the Pochombo Electronic Ensemble than with K-Pop and American trends. Dog meat carries substantially less of a taboo than in the Peninsula, though no dog is involved in the several dishes whose creation they pride themselves in, like the Naseong jiggae, the kimchi-based kaseolol, or the Heodeuseun bulgogi, which usually includes sturgeon slices. None of this, though, truly speaks about what makes Jibung-In people unique -the reason it might have given, for its size, an unusual amount of prominent astronomers, poets and civil engineeers.
This diaspora group started to acquire its distinctive cultural traits early in the 20th century, when a sudden price rise of US real estate as a result of speculation, a particular migrant wave byproduct of the Third Plague, and the wave of anti-Asian sentiment it exacerbated, conspired in the way the Koreatown ghettoes organized: many migrants in the big cities could only find themselves bargaining the usage of the upper part of cramped tenements, often devoid of any accomodation: in a rather extra-legal fashion, they built huts in the upper part of those buildings, and where neighborhood communities started to form, they even built improvised wooden and metal bridges connecting the upper buildings together above the streets. The first attempt to cramp down these add-ons to the neighborhoods they inhabited... it showed they understood very well their second-amendment rights, and gave them the insular and mistrustful aura they still carry out. Still, they earned, as decades passed and ran successful small businesses, the status of exemplary migrants -by then, the custom of dwelling a connected maze on top of a neighborhood had become, by habit and pride, a part of what they were. When further Korean waves of migration came, they rapidly adopted the lifestyle -even in small towns, a typical Jibung-In dwelling will be a shop where the space of habitation is accomodated on its roof. In the cities, the maze of improvised lanes and bridges of the Koreatows has eventually become a true upper layer of streets, with its own stairs and elevators, its own schools, temples, shops and clinics. And those are heavily armed and guarded layers, in which outsiders can only enter by acknowledged permission of a respected dweller: their siege mentality, often based on imagined threats, at times based on real ones when riots and crime waves happen, keep their bonds together. This is why, though they thend to consider it a slur and prefer to be named by their vernacular name, they're universally known by the world at the bottom as Roof Koreans.
