I'm watching Star Trek: Voyager at the moment, and this is something that's occurred to me. Our intrepid crew get a lot of lucky breaks over the years, cutting what was originally a 75 year journey to a small fraction of that. But what if it had taken as long as they originally expected - even accounting for some finagling and advancing the ship's systems, there is plenty of stuff that could have slowed them down.

I'm thinking less about consequences for the wider world, but how Voyager's society might have evolved as it effectively became a generation ship.
