Consequences - Jazz, Charle Brown, and Maths: The Strange Origins of ‘Google’

This may be an urban legend, but I did hear that the reason for the misspelling was their first big investor only having heard it spoken out loud and so writing it down wrong on the cheque, and it being easier to change the company name.
Possible; I remember my best friend thinking the number was called a "gillion" when we were at school, due to only hearing it once and making it fit the more common name format.
