A pretty straightforward question : how could Yugoslavia (understood as a pre-1992 multiethnic state, although the borders or form of state do not have to remain the same as 1954's although in a similar enough shape) have joined the EEC and what would have been the consequences?
Everything is fair game, up for example to an actual switch to free market economy if you deem it plausible enough for the sake of the thread.
 
I think this works if Yugoslavia can stay relatively stable and convince everyone any tensions will be managed - especially with EEC membership! Keep Slobodan out of prominence and that might be doable. Which might mean Yugoslavia survives but as an infamously fractious headache for the rest of the EU

That would certainly be an absolute requirement for a late Yugoslavian entry in the EU (or an EEC on the verge of becoming the EU at this point) but what would be a pathway to an EEC membership (or at the very least association) in earlier decades, comparably to say, Greece or Spain?
