As a fan of unsolved mysteries (though in this case the solution is fairly clear but has been obfuscated by embellishments and omissions in many popular accounts), I've always been intrigued by the failure of the Roanoke colony in modern-day Virginia. One cannot help but wonder what might have happened if due to better planning or more favorable conditions the colony had managed to hang on until they were relieved. Would a settlement have persisted into modern day? How might the early colonization of North America have changed?
