Malaysia has tried to cosy up to China as of late, but I think their government’s ideology is quite independent of the PRC’s agenda.

Able to access with a Kuala Lumpur (capital city)-based VPN. I was in Johor (southernmost state) when I encountered these issues.

I didn't know this was a thing-conversly, the Russian nationalists are obsessed with this sort of thing.

That's bad. We're going back there in March, and perhaps staying for a year or so later on.

Some sites are banned there - I think fanfiction.net was banned in places.

I’m back in Johor with no issues—it might have somehow only been banned in the capital, Johor Bahru.
