Yeah, it was a pleasant surprise to see the "Wannabe Chessmaster who's not as smart as they think they are" trope I love done so well.

Also there's just one book left in the whole Kirov series before Schettler moves on to a fantasy war project he's announced. Can't blame him after a decade of radars and time machines.
 
So with the final, genuine, 100% real serious conclusion in the Kirov series just released, we finally have Volkov's final fate.

He's killed by an alien monster he thought was held more securely than it was. It's kind of anticlimactic, but the author was desperate to wrap up a series that simply couldn't end gracefully.
