'River of Teeth' review

So what I get from this review is that the hippos are a marketing gimmick rather than the point of the story?

It is reminiscent of Turtledove in one of his lighter moods, or perhaps John Birmingham.
I rarely see John Birmingham referenced in a good way. Usually when people say that something reminds them of his books, they meant that disparagingly.
