Of course the other advantage (which I didn't mention) is you don't have to worry too much about the broader strategic direction of the war being plausible if you only see it from the perspective of the bloke in the trench who doesn't know what's going on.It's a good point about the immediacy of standard prose (or play scripts etc) VS textbook in your foreword. Same reason we get anecdotes from people's accounts in straight history books, Beevor can describe the big overview of D-Day but the bit that sticks is a paratrooper seeing an oddly calm comrade with red gloves on and realising that's not gloves.
