For some time,I had some curious dreams about the Eighties trashy proto Glenn Beck conservative loud mouth known as Morton Downey Jr.More specifically,dreams of alternative history kind,in a timeline where Ronnie Raygun dies in ‘81,George becomes President and manages to win in 1984 against Hart(granted,harder than the OTL ‘84 election was for the GOP).Here the timeline diverges from dream to dream,being two main directions tho: one where he’s the running mate for Trump and is insulting Bentsen/Simon to a uncomfortable degree and another one where,discontent with Laxalt losing to Dole,decides to run for office to send a message,being quite memorable in the debates against Dole and Dukakis,yelling that they,along with Bush and the rest of Washington,sold out America to the lobbyists and bankers and destroyed the Dream.In both timelines he has a star and stripes suit and warms Escobar that “America is coming for your ass,so you better start praying,you drug dealing kid killing sum bitch”.His slogan is “Take America Back” or in some cases “A True America for True America”(hard to say).
Yes,it’s absurd,but it made wonder:in the timeline where he runs independent,who would be willing to be his running mate?(Note that Mort doesn’t actually want to win,he just wants attention and sent a message) How well could he do? And will it create something more dangerous for America?
Also,it should be clear that he starts feeling increasingly uncomfortable in this role he created as a loud mouth tells it all in the dream timelines in question,wondering if he’s doing more harm than good.Maybe have a viewpoint from Ted Kennedy,who Mort used to work for and respect before he became a conservative trait talk pundit dude.
