Honestly, most of the time, it doesn’t even feel like research. It just feels interesting, there’s an excitement to it, the thrill of discovery, uncovering the thing, and the next thing, pulling at this thread or that. You can get lost doing that.
Indeed. I'm sure we've all, at one point, crossed that line where research is no longer about laying the groundwork for your TL and becomes an end in itself. Personally I'm still trying to extirpate myself from that particular rabbit hole.
 
So that's a lot of books I need to start buying!

A good point about blunt titles: Axis Of Andes tells you everything. "Grunt! Axis is WW2! Andes is South America! Me want WW2 in South America!"

And the anecdote of trying a loathed genre for money and getting no money is sobering
