Very good article on the colonial history of North America. I found it rather deterministic, though. I don't think the New Netherlands was too small to survive. It received more settlers than New France did in its much longer history. The actual problem is the Netherlands not caring much about it. I also don't think South Carolina was guaranteed to succeed if the Spaniards were strong enough. I must say I did not know it was founded from Barbados.
