Caribbean Cold War: Anguilla vs the Empire

I should mention that in March 2017, I was aiming to write an AH travelogue around the Caribbean, the Haiti bits of that later were reused into Vodou Props and, having struggled with the limited sources about Anguilla, asked @Stateless to send me some civil service documents from the time for the chapter there. Which he did.

I never actually wrote that story, but here five and a half years later I finally used those sources for something. So thanks, Stateless.

@Gary Oswald

I knew a bit about this, due to my curiosity on looking up Nottinghamshire MPs, but I now know the fully what happened which is nice.

William Whitlock’s career getting destroyed because he made a faux pas and then followed it up by claiming that ‘Violent Black Nationalists’ had taken the island seems very in tune with the clumsy nature of the Wilson Government and it’s dealings with former colonies.

As for the remaining question, why do I get the sense that an independent Anguilla would become the setting of a Death in Paradise type show.

I can see it, mostly because I can very easily see an independent Anguilla offering very generous perks to people wanting to film there as long as they provided some local employment.

It reminds me of a point I made about if Malta had stayed a British Overseas Territory Ala Gibraltar it would likely become the location for cheap British Detective Shows and Films, probably have the Sweeney 2 type energy.

You know, reading that the possibilities for independent Anguilla were assumed to be either Castro or Lansky I don't think I've ever seen ti done where the latter and the rest of the Mob simply set up shop in another Caribbean island. And to do it in one that's a micronation and where they can have a far greater influence over government is an intriguing story setting.

Not to mention create their own parties just in case and run the country themselves.

Minister of Internal Affairs Anthony John Spilotro has a nice ring to it.

This sounds like something from a setting @Coiler would write in.

One of the background details of The Stomach of Man Under Socialism is a "successful" West Indies Federation based on both greater West Indies involvement in WW2 and on Whitehall believing a Federation would be less susceptible to American influence, and being a lot more willing to put in the work to keep the colonies together.

I'm enjoying this series so far, great articles on an underused region.
