The cover follows @Thande's principle whereby (I paraphrase) alternate timeline flags should not actually be very good, because flags our timeline's flags are often a bit naff too.
I've not finished it yet but the amazing thing about For Want of a Nail is how it prefigures so many fully-formed academic AH tropes - not a flawed prototype but a masterpiece from first principles.
Yeah I don't quite know how to describe the feeling that something I had largely encountered online had this fully formed (and mostly better executed) precursor.
