To put £50 back then into context, my father started working as a BBC sound technician in 1960 (he would later work on 'Doctor Who') and earned £7 per week.

If they had made The Red Fort, by Terry Nation and set during the British Raj, then that might have been for the best.The saddest timeline is one where the BBC did make these shows and then pulps them to reuse the reels.
In addition to the historical serials and character details, it's interesting to consider some of these recurring ideas during the early years that could have become the norm. The notion of more single episode stories, the notion that the TARDIS could shrink itself as well as travelling in time and space, and the frequent use of another planet in the solar system that would eventually evolve into Mondas for the final serial of Hartnell's tenure.

Shoutout to the timeline where they did a counter-earth story and forgot about it when it came time for Mondas, accidentally saying the First Doctor's heroics had all come to naught!

That did happen in the second series story Planet of Giants. The Tardis lands on Earth, but it has shrunk so that the crew are only an inch high.
This contrasts with the later American TV series Land of the Giants, where a space ship from Earth happened to crash on an Earth-like planet where everything, including the inhabitants, were twelve times larger.

Crossover idea: the TARDIS visits the planet from Land of the Giants but due to a malfunction the ship and all its passengers are sized relative to the planet and its inhabitants.
That did happen in the second series story Planet of Giants. The Tardis lands on Earth, but it has shrunk so that the crew are only an inch high.
IIRC this was one of the earliest ideas for a story, it was in the pitches and mentioned as an idea for the very first episodes!
