By 1921 Adolf Hitler started building himself a comfortable career as a figure of the German far right and the NSDAP’s most prominent figure,but it wasn’t a particularly stable one.
See,in August 1921 Anton Drexler was having merger discussions with the German Social Party and Otto Dickel’s Völkisch Work Community,the latter having been invited to Munich to give a speech instead of Hitler,who was away in Berlin and rushed back as soon as possible to Augsburg (where Drexler was meeting with other völkisch leaders) after hearing that Dickel’s speech was a success,trying to stop him and Drexler from sidelining him. After being unable to break up the discussions Hitler,angry as fuck,went to Munich and resigned from the party,protesting against the planned fusion and viewing Dickel as someone who would “dilute and weaken” the movement,demanding that he be given total control of the party.
Thus started for a while a dispute for the leadership of the party where Hitler showed up unannounced at NSDAP rallies and attacked Drexler while Drexler’s supporters wrote pamphlets accusing him of being a traitor and secretly Jewish and acting under the orders of Charles Habsburg.
Eventually though Drexler gave in mostly because Hitler was the main reason why people came to NSDAP’s rallies and without him the party would lose supporters and let Hitler have complete and unquestionable control of the party.
But if Drexler didn’t give in? What if he stood his ground and the planned fusion went on,while Hitler made his own party?
