While the polls were close. Vice president Nixon the state of Illinois and that was enough to tip the election in the vice president's favor.
Senator Kennedy will stay in the senate till 1972 after he dies from Addison's his brother Teddy will replace his as senator.

New York Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller divorces his wife. The governor also breaks up with his mistress of many years.

Senate majority leader Lyndon Baines Johnson wins nomination of his party as presidential candidate. Although the economy is doing well. the u.s. backed ousting of Fidel Castro has leader of Cuba was controversial and civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King jr. criticizes President Nixon for doing nothing on civil rights.

Governor Nixon scored a comeback in 1966 winning the election of governor of California, defeating Edmund Brown. Nixon said time and time again he would not follow the path of president Cleveland and try to run for president again he said many time he would refuse the nomination if it was given to him and instead would endorse either Goldwater or Rockefeller for the nomination in 1968.

Johnson announced a bid for 2nd term as president of the United states. the u.s. involvement in the Cuban civil war had soured the popularity of president Johnson in the eyes of many Americans but he did not think a Republican could win in 68 ,the 64 election was close but Johnson got Medicare. Civil rights by the end of 1968 Cuban civil war would wind down regardless of who won the election.
Governor Rockefeller 3 term governor of New York and Jim Rhodes debate with other Republican challengers in Miami. although, Rocky as many in New York call the governor, wins the Republican 68 Florida primary it is no landslide, in fact Ohio Governor Rhodes was a close 2nd in place.
Before senator Goldwater entered the race, Ohio governor Jim Rhodes was a challenger for the 1968 Republican nomination but he did so poorly in the first three primaries he dropped out of the race and Arizona senator Barry Goldwater entered the race to become Rockys chief rival.
Senator Eugene McCarthy challenges president Johnson for the Democratic nomination. vice president Humphrey resigns the vice presidency and endorses Eugene McCarthy over president Johnson, senator John Kennedy also breaks ranks and endorses senator McCarthy.
