Could the two main parties position on currency been reversed? If so, how could it had been done?

I don't think it's particularly possible

Republicans were very much the Party of Business and of Established Interests. And of Northern states which benefited economically from a Gold Standard. Meanwhile, Democrats tended to be of the rural South (and with the absorption of the Populists, the West) so they benefited from Silver

One can get the Democratic Party to go gold, they vacillated on it for a number of years and Bryan was probably the deciding factor, but Silver Republicans in charge is a much harder issue.

Possibly a more brutal Reconstruction might do it, as Southern African-Americans would benefit from silver, while, assuming most White Southerners are disenfranchised, the Democratic Party would evolve to favor Northern issues more, in turn weakening the Republicans and making them rely more heavily on their new Southern conquests.

No matter how you slice it it's not gonna last.
