IIRC, the Doctor Who Magazine strips were discussing whether to switch to Grant when they heard about the new show.  That could have given us two years of Other Ninth Doctor strips!

My big fan theory is if Grant wasn't already cast as someone in 2012, Moffat would've had him play the War Doctor when Eccleston wouldn't come back. It's the sort of thing a fan would do, Grant would be a 'name' for the special, and big selling point for Shalka DVDs!
