Could Spain have preempted forever France's conquest of Algeria? By conquering its northern coast at any of the following points, the 1500s, the 1600s, the 1700s, or the 1815-1830 timeframe, and - more importantly, holding the land on a regular basis through the mid 20th century, through any period in which France might have been interested in making a colony of it? (IE, if the French ever grab it in a war of one of the Louis or a Napoleon, or another power grabs it, is just a short term occupation and Spain gets it back post-bellum). Interested in both a Spanish Algeria, however far back or recent its heritage goes, and an Algeria-less France.
