  • Thank you to everyone who reached out with concern about the upcoming UK legislation which requires online communities to be compliant regarding illegal content. As a result of hard work and research by members of this community (chiefly iainbhx) and other members of communities UK-wide, the decision has been taken that the Sea Lion Press Forum will continue to operate. This forum will continue to operate

Thank you to everyone who reached out with concern about the upcoming UK legislation which requires online communities to be compliant regarding illegal content. As a result of hard work and research by members of this community (chiefly @iainbhx ) as well as other communities UK-wide, the decision has been taken that the Sea Lion Press Forum will continue to operate.

Some of our forum rules will be refined in the coming week to ensure 100% compliance, but there will be no noticeable change in how the forum works, beyond the appointment of some more moderators - vital to maintaining compliance is the ability to ensure that any reports can be swiftly dealt with, whatever timezone they take place in.

We have also been advised by Ofcom's own guidance that we do not need to implement age verification for the forum.

I'm sure everyone is as delighted as I am by this turn of events and I am only sorry for the distress caused in the interim. While nobody can say what the future holds (particularly when it comes to legislation), it is wonderful that this community will be able to remain cohesive and on this forum for the time being.

Finally, while it was gratifiying to receive many approaches offering support, including financial, I said from the start that this situation was not one fixable via fundraising. That remains broadly true, but the extra steps we need to take are going to have a non-zero impact on SLP's bottom line, and it bears saying that for unrelated reasons, the forum's server disk space is nearing capacity, which will drive up costs or necessitate a cull of older attachments or posts. Anyone who wishes to support SLP, for this reason or any other, can continue to do so at patreon.com/sealionpress
Thank goodness. I am superbly glad to hear about this.

There’s an interview on the Today Programme today (c. 0752) with the chap who runs the cycling forum (amongst 300 others) that’s shutting down.

Very much echoing what I think is the common view of “I don’t think I’d have much personal liability, but I simply cannot afford to risk it”. Follow-up chat with an online safety campaigner (his daughter, Molly, took her own life following some online goading) and likewise thinks the Ofcom guidelines are misplaced.

And of course we already have the media screaming for OFCOM to do something (complete with "scary computer user" stock photo):

And, obviously, they start with something which is hard to defend. But photos and video footage of people dying isn't inherently illegal.

If the admins of this site are in the US, they may have bigger problems than OFCOM, given just how broad a view the present Administration take of "promoting terrorism" when it suits them.
