I don't know if I've talked to you about this before but I've always been AH-speculative about the fact that Mikhail Bakunin was friends with William Gwin's secretary Joseph Heco - possibly the first prominent Japanese-American - and iirc was in the US hanging out with him shortly after the outbreak of the Civil War. It'd be super interesting to see what this big name political theorist thinks, being there at the birth of a state!
