For what it's worth مرتدّ (murtadd) is a better translation of "apostate" than زنديق (zindeeq) which is closer to being a heretic

This was actually intentional, and I went back and forth on it. My understanding is that zindeeq has more severity attached to it than does murtadd, and was chosen here for his status to show that his re-conversion to Christianity throws the sincerity of his initial conversion to Islam into question.
