Sport and Politics. The Olympic Games, Part 6

An interesting 'chain of consequences' for Atlanta 1996 is that the brothers behind the influential Homestar Runner webtoon franchise wrote the original children's book it's based on while working behind the scenes at the Games, and I think there was some direct inspiration given the (soon abandoned) initial sporting theme.

Each child earned Brothers $10 per month from the Korea Christian Crusade agency, which became the Eastern Social Welfare Society.
One can see why they changed the name.

I remember Ben Johnson's fleeting moment of glory--I was an exchange student in Canada at the time, and my host family were rooting for him. That is, until he was found to have cheated.
