Operation Morrell was the cursed success of the Reagan administration. Intended largely to flex US muscle against Vietnam, the operation--sending a mentally ill ex-vagrant to find an illusory group of US POWs--was never meant to bear fruit. Yet somehow it did. John Rambo, who three years ago was a domestic terrorist, was now seen as the greatest American soldier since George Washington. More importantly for the administration, the Republicans could point to their success in "bringing US boys home". However, not quite enough people saw it that way.

Many have claimed that Perot sold his soul to maniacs for success. This rosy view, largely driven by nostalgia during the North presidency for a "sensible conservative", is completely ignorant. While he might have unleashed forces beyond his control, he was well-connected with said forces from the beginning. The POW/MIA movement, radicalised by vindication, transformed from a small group of soldier's wives to a cauldron of right-wing madness, had always seen Perot as one of them, and he was certainly a fellow-traveller before it was popular. Reform might have been started to break out of a two-party mould, but it quickly became the political wing of the National Alliance of Families for the Return of America's Missing Servicemen. This was always the Reform Party that succeeded; it is nonsensical to pretend otherwise.

The ability to outflank the Republicans from the right gave Reform a Presidency; the ability to work alongside them gave them a future. The two parties became unstoppable when combined, and have dominated ever since. The Reform Party, founded on the principle of bringing American soldiers home, became the party of sending them abroad to maintain America. Fighting for democracy (ignore the Thai army crushing protests), Christianity (ignore the Afghan Caliphate beheading Nestorians), and basic rights (ignore Hussein gassing his own people), the American aegis stretches from Burma to Britain and from Poland to Peru. The war even, on occasion, returns home to us. The fundamental doctrine, with hypocrisy removed, is nothing more than naked strength--the US must never lose, like it did in Vietnam.

And it all started in 1970, with a unit of Green Berets marshalling for battle...

Coda:

Polling for the Republican Primaries, 10th February 2020:
Former President Chris Christie--2%
--- With a lacklustre performance in office capped off by a corruption scandal, few are willing to give Christie a second term.

Virginia State Representative Jerry Falwell Jr.--6%
--- Despite plenty of die-hard evangelical support, Falwell has been outgunned by others, and has been plagued by personal scandals, making him highly likely to drop out soon.
Senator Connie Mack IV--15%
--- Running on a platform of increased support for the Visegrad Pact doesn't enthuse most voters, but Mack remains a contender to watch for.
Governor
Mark Green--31%
--- Having managed to steal Falwell's religious base while keeping his business backers has paid off, with Green in a strong position for Tuesday after wins in NH and SC.
Former Marine Captain
John Rambo---45%
--- Back in the public eye after defending his home from drug cartels, and with the backing of the neo-con faction, Rambo is a very strong frontrunner, even if some have raised concern about his bellicose language towards opponents...

The Year is 1979 and despite nearly 35 years of constant ups and downs and those last four which were very squeaky bum time (remember when we were all going to die in Nuclear Hellfire over China, those were the days) the world has managed to keep spinning despite it all.

In the U.S.A. it seems that the great experiment in Paleoconservatism...umm...went poorly. Larry MacDonald thought that by simply setting fire to the glorious (and wheezing) Industrial Consumer Cooperative Democracy set up by the Lewis-Voorhis administrations and replacing it with Milton Friedman’s wet dreams, that America would become a great country again. This went poorly, leaving America at the mercy of Market Forces was a terrible idea with the Dollar at one point being worth less than the Warsaw Rouble as a Global Recession occurred. The Conservative project ripped itself to shreds as the State Righters left, grumpy at MacDonald’s lack of reinstalling the idea of Jim Crow or the fact that he didn’t use machine guns to dispose of rioters in Harlem. Meanwhile Left and Right Wing Militias battled each other, as Striking Miners re-enacted the Coal Wars of the 1910s and AIM battled Neo-Nazi’s at Wounded Knee as America looked like it would rip itself to shreds.

John Lindsay’s victory in 76’ for many symbolised the victory of Common Sense, of American Liberalism triumphant return after it blooded itself over the argument between Yorty, McCall and Spock in 72’. The New Left would grit there teeth, salved slightly by the appearance of Walter Reuther as the Vice President as he advocates for the creation of a Social Democracy which is slightly out of step with Lindsay's Liberal, New Deal, Social Market ideas. Whilst John Lindsay seeks to rectify the chaos created in Larry MacDonald's wake the Conservative movement wonders where to go next, with some advocating for a reunification to oust Lindsay whilst other's advocate more...direct means to say the least.

Meanwhile in Britain the remains of the Cripps Consensus shuffle onwards, the War and Cripps created it, Eden conserved it and Durbin extended it as British Christian Social Democracy became the talk of Europe. Profumo was in many respects a reaction to State Management and Fabianism of the previous Governments, an attempt to turn Britain into a Social Market nation occurred, but the Trade Unions would battle Profumo at every turn and eventually ghosts from his past would come back to haunt him. Walker tried to continue Profumo's work, but a global recession in the wake of MacDonald's appearance on the scene followed by chaos over a possible thermonuclear war would lead to Walker being left holding the bag when Varley gained a landslide victory.

But Varley is being presented with an awkward Britain, the Cripps Consensus is beginning to feel it's age and Britain never really recovered from the recession as well as other nations. The raise of the Syndicalist/Democratic Socialist CommonWealth on the Left and the raise of the once moribund National Front on the Right has meant that Varley has become reliant on the Radicals for support, which may not be a bad thing. Labour has lagged behind on the Civil Rights and the Radicals ideas on spreading the Cripps Consensus outwards through decentralisation instead of routing everything back to Westminster may bring new life to a wheezing system.

The Soviet Union isn't your grandad's Soviet Union, one of constant Famines, Stalinist rule and an economy heavily tied to Heavy Industry, Stalin's death in 45 would pave the way for the eventual victory of the Leningrad Group of Technocrats, Market Socialists and the raise of 'Capitalist Communism' because whilst the Zhdanov Doctrine would unify the Warsaw Pact culturally, the Voznesensky-Koysgin doctrine would unify the Warsaw Pact economically as it went from being the puppet states of the Soviet Union, to being an economic trading pact which openly competes with Europe and America. The Soviet Union no longer extends it's reach via force, but via a system of elaborate projects and economic pacts with developing nations reliant on support as America spasmed during the late 60s and 70s.

But all is not right in the Soviet Union, just because it has a vibrant economy doesn't mean it's not experiencing it's own problems, corruption is rife and battles between Farmers and Gangsters in the early 70s lead to the raise of Pyotr Masherov, a member of the supposed Left of the CPSU, he has advocated reform away from just being an Market Socialist system but to one that could be called a Social Democracy if you squinted very hard and ignored the Authoritarian aspects to it. Whilst Pytor symbolises a supposed new step in the Soviet program of modernisation, the same old aspects of it remain, dissidents still arrested, free speech stifled and any form of democracy outside of the monitored workplace democracies scrubbed clean from the earth.

China has been the bubbling pot for the past 35 years, if Wendall Wilkie did anything of note outside of being America's Brief War President and dying it was his fascination with China brought about by a late night stand with the Madame Chiang Kai-shek that meant that the Republic of China managed to cling on to some territory on the Chinese Mainland, even if being an ROC official in Guangdong is the equivalent of playing Russian Roulette but with car bombs instead of revolver bullets. Meanwhile the PRC tried to continue the ideals of Stalinism under Mao, but the Great Leap Forward nearly lead to a China so depopulated that the ROC could have just rolled tanks in and drove all the way to Beijing. The Soviets decided that this wasn't to be the case and Mao would be sent to a small guarded Dacha in Siberia to live out the rest of his days with his wife. In his place, Zhou Enlai would step in but his stubborn refusal to join the Soviet Economy would see his removal within in three years to be replaced by a reformer in the shape of Li Shaoqi who managed to keep China humming until the global recession graced the PRC's door in 1974.

To Lin Bao this was the sign of failure within the Chinese system and he would perform a coup. The next 3 years would see the China's preparing for war as Lin Bao and Chiang Ching-kuo macho waved there nuclear ICBM's at each other supported by an ailing Kosygin and Larry MacDonald in full Anti-Communist mode. In the end American and the Soviet Union had enough, Lin Bao would be deposed in a palace coup as the Gang of Five (a coalition of the CCP's Right and Left) united to overthrow the Bonaparte that was Lin, supported by the Soviet Union. Meanwhile America would support the National Democratic Coalition of Reconciliation, part of a wave of Pro-Democracy revolts that swept across the globe as everywhere from Portugal to Egypt to India would see Pro-Democracy Revolts. As the Reformers in the PRC establish there grip and finally join the Warsaw Economic Pact and the ROC embraces Democracy for the first time, it seems the world whilst not perfect is managing to stabilise itself.

Well for now at least, who knows what the next year will bring as the new Muslim Democracy of Egypt stares at Israel intently...

Basic premise is that the Xinhai Revolution's a lot more militarily successful, and most Qing forces stand down after piecemeal negotiations between the revolutionaries and local garrison commanders. Li Yuanhong and Dr. Sun cut a deal where Li gets the presidency in exchange for guaranteeing the power of the National Assembly, which is soon dominated by Nationalists. Sun's vision of a parliamentary republic mostly dissipates when he becomes president himself six years later, and his interference has lasting consequences on the health of Chinese state institutions and democracy.

Nothing too crazy here. Coolidge running for a second term leads to Hoover being locked out and by the time the nomination is open, he very much doesn't want it. He instead focuses on running for Governor for California where his race against Upton Sinclair makes him a legend among conservatives. Meanwhile, Ritchie's nomination means the continuation of the old school Democratic conservative control. His sudden death puts McAdoo in charge who is distrusted by the party old guard and is only placated by the adding of the right wing New York Governor to the ticket.

Hoover runs in 1936 and loses respectably considering the whole Great Depression thing. McAdoo passes much of his program but the recession in 1938 hurts his political capital and the aging President is mostly turned into a lame duck. That's when Hoover comes in and storms into the White House, exploiting a division in the Democratic Party as well as on the left more broadly. He enters office, continues New Deal programs, fights a war with Japan, cuts spending, and fights a war with the vast Greater Germanic Reich in that order. He ends up serving as many terms as he needs to completely reorder American society.

In the end, the Hoover coalition puts the GOP as the main force in charge, beating back conservative Democratic challengers until after 20 years, the public finally tires and embraces the moderate Catholic Senator Joe Kennedy who defeats President Green by promising nondescript change and development.

Hoover will be widely remembered as one of the greatest Presidents that the United States has ever had and continues to influence party politics until his death in 1964. His behind the scenes political maneuvering of shanking Richard Nixon in the back would see his own successor, the consummate entrepreneur and popular governor, take the nomination though the elder statesman would not live long enough to see his final triumph.

“We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.”-The Hacker Manifesto, 1995

“Hackers of the World, Unite” Zer0 Cool, 1995

It’s been an odd 30 years to say the least, what started with the United efforts of Hackers everywhere to take down another corrupt hacker has turned into something...else.

Some say that the cracks emerged after the Clinton Takedown or when Barlow took over Reform or maybe when Dean brought about the ‘Superhighway Act’ which gave everyone the chance to connect to the internet but all the same the Hacking Community it could be said has split in two, on one side ‘The Frontiersmen’ and on the other ‘The Collectives’.

The ‘Frontiersmen’ would dominate the politics of the early 21st Century, as the followers of the teachings of Barlow managed to enter the mainstream. These Techno-Utopians believed that the way forward for mankind was to be harnessed by the power of the internet and accidentally helped by Dean they would manage to get into the highest office of all as the Republicans collapsed into bickering and the Democrats were outmanoeuvred by a revived Left.

But the Utopian ideals of Lessing and Free World and People created by a Free Internet would be undercut by his dealings with people like Epstein and the death of his compatriot Aaron Swartz. In his place stepped T.J.Rodgers who combined the idealism of Lessing with a love for the ideals of the Randian individual and Lassiez Faire Capitalism.

This wouldn’t have the effect has anticipated and American began to collapse on the world stage, something similar had been occurring across the major nations of the world as the forces of business and Capitalism began to spin out of control. As his age got to him, more and more power would be given over to Corporations and his Vice President, as the Free Internet became a breeding ground for Fascists who lashed out in increasingly violent ways.

This is where the ‘The Collectives’ come in. The Left of the Hackers Cause, unlike the Right Libertarians of the ‘Frontiersmen’, the ‘The Collectives’ are united by the philosophies of Kropotkin, Bookchin, Graber and Sterling, with the idea of the Communalist society transplanted from those thinkers into the ideals of the internet. These Hacker communes are disparate but united and collectivised. It could be said that Beto O'Rourke made them a legitimate force but Zero Cool is what made them a fighting force.

And so the battle for control of America, the internet and the world was fought between those would believed in the ultimate ideal of the Randian individual and those who believed in the ideas of the collective. This battle would lead to the collapse of the ‘Frontiersmen’ there new LoFi Fascist Leader causing the Republicans to go for a less sinister figure in the bland exterior of Ken Howery.

The Democrats would gain power of a broken country but one with the potential of hope again. Katie Porter seems happy to battle the big corporations who have grown off the back of Rodger’s lacklustre tenure and with the support of ‘The Collectives’ gain control of Cyberspace away from the forces of the Right.

But they will have to contend with the Reform-EFF’s new leader, as the broken and battered party finds itself with a new leader. He calls himself Eugene Belford, but most people know him as “the Plague” and he is ready to take revenge on the world and “The Collectives” for defeating him all those years ago...

I fucking regret nothing.
