Liberals: The coalition of coastal mercantile interests and agrarian interests in the American south and the west, largely united by their support of free trade. The party found its origins among supporters of Andrew Johnson following the veto of the 1872 Tariff and the subsequent splintering of the National Union Party. Extremely popular among the urban bourgeoisie, German-Americans, and the white southern lumpenproletariat empowered by land redistributions during the first Reconstruction. Derided as the party of "mob rule" they would often manifest their mass support through lynchings against Afro-American and immigrant communities.

Nationalists: The ideological successors of the Whig Party and dissident sections of the National Union Party which would form the second Know-Nothing movement. The party found its support base among the industrialists, intelligentsia, and evangelical groups who held more pro-tariff and nativist sympathies. While attacked by the opposition as "monopoly elites", their technocratic and developmentalist attitude ensured their broad support base, particularly in New England and Appalachia. Mass industrialization, universal education, the Christian amendment, and the federal eugenics program are among their distinct achievements.

Socialists: A century ago, Andrew Johnson reluctantly signed the Civil Rights Bill of 1866 in exchange that moderate Republicans would not support any further acts or amendments to enfranchise Afro-Americans. As a result, state governments were allowed to deny "non-whites" the right to vote, often segregating them into ghettoized communities. It was this growing solidarity between Afro-American, Amerindian, and European migrant workers that would form the American Socialist Party. Banned following the assassination attempt on Thomas Edison over federal actions during the Irondale Massacre, the Socialist Party would survive through the political underground, as corporatist industrialization created a growing labor movement. The party would continue to grow throughout the colonial Pan-Atlantic Wars and the Panic of 1922 leading to the subsequent Second American Revolution under the leadership of [...]

Okay, these coalition recombinations are getting confusing

The Kingdom of Conscience

- Al Gore is elected in 2000 over Bush
- 9/11 happens as it did IOTL due to the failure of the American national security state caused by intra-agency rivalries and the empire's support for untrustworthy "rouge" entities
- The invasion and occupation of Afghanistan occurs with Gore refusing to negotiate with the Taliban to surrender Al-Qaeda, establishing a new government which comes under the rule of various warlords which come to support the liberal former monarch, Mohammad Zahir Shah
- Like in our timeline, attempts at nation-building are largely behest by corruption, ethnic divisions, and rivalries between occupation-backed warlords
- Unlike our timeline, the 2003 invasion of Iraq does not occur. Rather the international community grows alarmed by the Darfur genocide, leading to the invasion of Sudan under a US-UK-French coalition.
- This violent act of liberal intervention incenses political instability and ethnic violence within Sudan as attempts at nation building prove deeply difficult. Despite this, the country is nonetheless divided between private militaries in service to western mining and energy companies.
- Despite this, Gore remains a largely popular president elected, being elected in a landslide against his political opponent.
- In the coming years, civil uprisings occur in Iraq, leading to Libya-style interventions under NATO to oust the hostile regime. The succeeding coalition-backed regime grows increasingly violent and pillarized around military-corporate figures similar to Libya
- The Great Recession occurs: Dan Patrick is elected as president. Despite touting a populist conservative platform more hostile towards “globalism”, the presence of American troops in Afghanistan and Sudan surges as stealth bombers fill the skies.
- To ensure the stability and prosperity of the core under the world systems theory, the destruction of periphery nation-states is the natural result of violence being applied to establish a regime which upholds its interests. The actions of the empire will be justified through liberal optimism or reactionary nationalism, but the goal remains the same.

The Heroic Age - “In the end? Nothing ends, Adrian. Nothing ever ends.”

1941-1944: Franklin D. Roosevelt/ Harry S. Truman (Democratic)

- During the year 1943, President Roosevelt establishes the Department of Peacekeeping, the first government agency of "superheroes" consisting of costumed prohibition-era vigilantes and colorful government agents. The only superpowered member of the group is the enhanced being known as "Trinity", a gesalt entity with control over the forces of electromagnetism and gravity created in the aftermath of the Philadelphia Experiment. With the exception of Trinity, the Peacekeepers are largely used for propaganda purposes and are believed to be a method of raising the hopes of America in their war against the growing Nazi war machine.

1944-1949: Harry S. Truman / vacant (Democratic)

- Following the Second World War, Trinity elects to resign from the Peacekeepers, declaring that they joined the Peacekeepers to defend humanity and that serving the American government will no longer ensure the betterment of mankind. They then leave the solar system to explore the universe. As the Cold War begins, the Peacekeepers grow increasingly unpopular due to America's failures to prevent the fall of Greece and China/Taiwan to communism. The Peacekeepers are eventually abolished under the Truman administration.

1949-1957: George S. Patton/ C. Wayland Brooks (Republican)

- Throughout the next era, the Peacekeepers either enter the entertainment industry or serve American interests in clandestine operations as special agents or private mercenaries. While Truman attempted to distance the American government from their actions, the election of President Patton in 1948 and his subsequent heightening of Cold War openly endorses the actions of these "superheroes against communism" as Jetpack Jack, Mr. Mental, and the Bannerman openly endorse the actions of these growing pro-American vigilante filibusters across South America and post-colonial Africa. This is in spite of their open collaboration with WWII fascist figures formerly labeled as "supervillains" who now serve their anti-communist interests.

1957-1959: Stuart Symington/Robert A. Heinlein (Democratic)
1959-1961: Robert A. Heinlein/ vacant (Democratic)

- President Stuart Symington is elected and his reluctance to intervene against Communist Cuba and desire to investigate the actions of the CIA's support of these "anti-heroes" is met with much scrutiny, even as they openly collaborate with fascist supersoldiers. He is assassinated by a drifter addicted to Laotian heroin and former Senator Robert A. Heinlein takes the Presidency under a platform of a New America fueled by the liberal promise of peace and justice for all. His liberal idealism sees increased interventions throughout the Congo Crisis, significant cutbacks to labor protections, and a watered-down civil rights bill being passed.

1961-1969: Robert A. Heinlein/ Frank Clement (Democratic)

- Heinlein's desire to create a "new American hero" persists, leading to the revival of the super soldier program through eugenics and experimental science. His administration also sees the beginning of the War on Drugs to counteract growing movements in favor of civil rights, anti-interventionism, and anti-establishment politics. A new generation of strongmen in costumes deputized by local police departments harass minority neighborhoods and political movements, continuing the legacy of prohibition-era vigilantes. Despite growing discontent towards his administration, Heinlein is the first president to serve more than three terms since Roosevelt.

1969-pres: James McGlothlin/ Homa J. Porter (Republican)

- The Republican Party nominates WWII veteran, movie star, and famed mercenary, the former superhero James McGlothlin better known as "Powder Boy". While he is a drug-addicted philandering racist, that doesn't stop America from loving their new President. Though the national security state believes that McGlothlin is an easily manipulated figure to rally popular support, little do they know his desire to expand the Space Race with a base on the moon is secretly a part of his grand scheme to find and capture "Trinity", to ensure they become an American asset once more.

Dreaming of Democracy: An Alternate Reformasi

1967-1970: Suharto (Independent)
1970-1974: Suharto (Golkar)
1974-1975: Hamengkubuwono IX (Golkar)

1975-1983: Sumitro (PNI)
1983-1988: Sanusi Hardjadinata (PNI
)
1988-1998: Sumitro (PNI)

The 1974 Malari protests in Indonesia represented a rising nationalist discontent against the new liberal regime instituted by General Suharto following his purge of leftist factions and institution as president. The growing role of foreign investors in government policy and criticisms of corruption would led to a rise in discontent targeting Suharto and his clique of personal assistants. During the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Tanaka, student groups filled the streets to protest leading to violent riots that saw over a hundred deaths. This led to growing criticism towards Suharto, especially from the military elite which had long distrusted him as a former low-ranking intelligence officer who now relied on gangsters and spymasters to cement his rule.

Led by General Sumitro, military units created to crack down on political dissent were used to arrest Suharto’s personal assistants on charges of corruption while Suharto himself opted to resign from power than face a terrible fate. Indeed, Sumitro was a prominent critic of the Suharto regime who had sympathized with the protestors and their desire to reduce the influence of military in politics. Under his rule, the Indonesian National Party (PNI) would be revived signaling a return to the era of Soekarno and national pride against foreign influence. Foreign businesses were further regulated as a series of economic reforms to bolster native Indonesian industry was instituted.

Yet this did not signal the beginning of a humanitarian liberal democracy that would be brought about by our timeline’s reformation. Under Sumitro’s regime the influence of the PNI was further cemented as political cadres and militant student wings sought to cement the new party regime through brutal means. Oftentimes, this manifested through programs against the ethnic Chinese, perceived as a race of business owners with an culture and economic status that had to be placed under control. Brutality against saboteurs and ethnic minorities cemented the new regime before former political rivals were offered positions of power in exchange for acts of fealty.

After all, Sumitro was a man who owed much of his rise to his close relationship with Suharto and his own role during the violent purge against the communist party during 1965. He would not shy away from bloodshed to cement his own power as threats that could not be bought off with public funds would be dealt with swiftly. Despite initial criticisms of his rule from Langley, the new regime did not entirely isolate itself from the west. Foreign investment was encouraged once more as the new regime was established and with assistance from the IMF, state owned enterprises were fully empowered to build a new Indonesia.

This cooperation with the west was further cemented as Indonesia invaded the nation of East Timor with western backing, seeking to eliminate a leftist government a swim’s distance from Australia. While it remained firmly nationalist and anti-communist, the PNI regime would not allow Indonesia to become a puppet to the west, welcoming Chinese investments to ensure relative independence in foreign and economic affairs, akin to Mobutu’s Zaire. With new transmigrant programs of ethnic resettlement disguised by a new vision for Indonesian industry and the consolidation of the ASEAN economic bloc, it seems Sumitro’s regime will remain for a while.

After all, Sumitro himself did not retain to his promise of serving only two terms, drawn back by the allure of power and control. But while the regime seems immortal, the man himself is not, plagued by poor health and old age. While he presents the image of a strongman to the people, the men in suits know that he is not for long and a new leader must secede him.

My Blue Heaven: The Folly of the White Working Class and the New Deal Coalition

1945-1949: Harry S. Truman/ vacant (Democratic) [1]

def. Robert A. Taft/ George Aiken (Republican), Henry Wallace/ Vito Marcantonio (Liberal)

[1] Unlike in our timeline, the Truman of this timeline suffered from severe injuries during the White House Reconstruction. Due to this, he would delegate much of his responsibilities to his secretaries and trusted advisors. Among these "advisors" was his wife Bess Wallace, whose personal antisemitism persuaded Truman against recognizing the newly-established State of Israel. Meanwhile, segregationist State Secretary James F. Byrnes was able to successfully prevent the desegregation of the armed forces, turning black and Jewish voters against the Democratic Party and towards Henry Wallace's newly established Progressive Party. As this occurred, blue-collared white-skinned workingmen flooded into suburbs across America, spurred by the booming post-war economy and ideals of white home ownership that would come to define the New Deal Coalition.

[2] The heir to the Rooseveltian New Deal Coalition was elected on a promise to keep the good times going for America. His first term was moderately successful, as Roosevelt reluctantly oversaw the integration of the army and federal government at the behest of civil rights leaders. Yet he would also reverse several New Deal-era policies with a desire to restore the ability of petit-bourgeoise business owners to subvert unorganized labor, further promoting car ownership by establishing a national highway system. Abroad, he would recognize Israel and send a considerable amount of aid to Greece as it underwent a civil war between communists and royalists. Yet not event these milquetoast successes would win re-election, losing with a southern splinter ticket opposed to the ruling of Brown v Board and a betrayal from the prodigal brother.

[3] A major voice for civil rights and labor protections, representing the dying breed of progressive populist Republicans. His liberal programs were successful thanks to his alliance with northern politicians though attempts at instituting major civil rights bills were stonewalled by segregationists in the Senate. Eventually, he would push through with his policies of desegregation, by cutting off federal aid to states that refused to comply with federal civil rights acts, leading to a massive surge of "white flight" into the suburbs.

[4] With the South growing alienated by Stassen's perceived radicalism on civil rights, Roosevelt's moderate platform of gradual reform became increasingly favored by the segregationists who initially opposed him. With support from the AFL and other "white unions" across the nation, Roosevelt's revived New Deal Coalition of organized labor and city machines won against Stassen's re-election campaign as many business-minded Republicans grew disaffected by his prairie populism. Though the coalition has shrunk to exclude more left-wing factions supported by black and Jewish voters, the white working class, petit-bourgeoisie, and influential industrialists stand firmly behind the ideals of homeowner rights with blue skies and white fences.

The Crisis of the 21st Century and the Slow Death of Capitalism (2030-2XXX)

- The War of Smoke and Mirrors
(The "conflict" between China and the US is non-existent, it is a pure farce. Global capitalism and ethnonationalism are not in conflict, the latter is merely a way of cementing the former)

- Plagues of Egypt (The rise of viral hemorrhagic arenavirus and severe forms of botulism have been exacerbated by the climate crisis during the modern era as people flee desertification, flooding, and civil conflict)

- Jerusalem Is Lost (The Middle East is struck hard by the growing crisis as the decay of civil order in much of the Mashriq and civil war between settler colonial factions in Israel leads people to turn to plurinational movements inspired by Rojava and the Arabian Republic)

- Romance of the Three Prophets (The growing economic crisis has created a generation of disaffected workers crushed by long hours and corporate overlords. in response, the Chinese New Left reasserts itself as People's Republic experiences a pink tide)

- Bonnie Blue Helmets (Years of civil conflict and climate disasters have forced the federal government to surrender much of their authority in the American south. Now the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Dixie must step in to restore order)

- Glorious Revolution (A millennia ago, the Italian city-states and the Hanseatic League were governed by a proto-capitalist mercantile system before being subsumed by feudal interests, leading to their dissolution. Yet history marches on and generations later, capitalism would become the defining ideology of most nation-states. A century ago, the Soviet Union established a scientific socialist system inspired by the writings of Marx before its eventual dissolution. Yet history continues to march on.)

Montezuma's Revenge: An Alternate 16th Century
  • Cocoliztli was a disease that killed over 80% of the population of New Spain during two drastic pandemics, targeting white colonists and native inhabitants alike, with symptoms of delirium caused by pain, as skin turned yellow from jaundice, tongues turned black due to dehydration, then an extreme bleeding from the orifices
  • Though several researchers have theorized the disease was a viral strain of salmonella, the symptoms do not match any known strain leading many to believe that the deaths were caused by a mix of drought, typhoid fever, and cocoliztli itself: an undiscovered rat-borne hemorrhagic fever, which for the purposes of this timeline, will be attributed to a form of New World hantavirus spread by rats and humans
  • In our timeline, most white settlers on the coast were spared from the pandemic as farmers in the drought-riddled interior or indigenous slaves packed into poorly sanitized slums were most susceptible to the disease. In this timeline, an outbreak occurs in the port of Veracruz during the 1576 pandemic, as several infected rats scurry onto ships headed to Seville, ships filled with gold and slaves
  • Cocoliztli spreads across Iberia, wiping out much of the Habsburg Empire then spreading from Lisbon to Brazil and ports across Europe, the primary one being Antwerp. The authority of the Spanish Inquisition is eliminated as the Empire becomes crippled by succession issues. Deurbanization becomes a major consequence of the pandemic with centers of noble power decimated as massive numbers of people flee into the countryside. This allows Phillip II centralize royal power as Portugal and Aragon are rendered wholly subservient to the Crown of Castille. All colonies are divided between the Council of the Orient and the Council of the Americas.
  • In France, cocolitzli spreads across the countryside, leading to a massive rise in support for Protestant Calvinist theology while much of the royal family and the population of Paris is taken by disease. Eventually, the rise of a Huguenot King in the form of Henry IV solidifies France's growing break away from the Church with the Habsburgs too crippled by disease and war to support the Catholic party of nobles.
  • Out of all the nations of Europe, the Netherlands is the hardest hit by cocoliztli due to its high urban population density and status as a center of trade. With many burghers fleeing to the countryside as Protestant merchants are crippled by strict quarantine measures, Habsburg governors begin to solidify their control over the region. After Dutch Revolt is put down, many rebelling lords have their lands taken away and given to Iberian nobles.
  • The Wars of Religion continue across the Holy Roman Empire, as the Cologne War spirals into a massive conflict between an alliance of Protestant nobles and the crippled Habsburg Empire, continuously plagued by succession issues and their rivalry with Protestant France. After a lengthy war that sees epidemics of cocolitzli, typhus, and influenza erupt across Germany, much of the leadership on both sides is killed by warfare and disease.
  • Through this anarchy, an Anabaptist preacher named Elias Kortenaer proclaims that the four kingdoms of Daniel: Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome have all fallen to make way for the fifth and final Kingdom of God. Gaining the support of revolting armies, disaffected merchants, and various peasant communes, he unites them under the banner of the White Horse, representing Christ as the first horseman of the apocalypse. But in the minds of many Kortenaer’s enemies, he symbolizes the horseman of pestilence.
  • With the Hapsburg Empire in shambles, the Ottoman Empire continues its grand march across the Balkans in a quest to defeat their enemies in the form of the Papal Holy League. But with city-states across Italy growing largely depopulated due to the wave of disease and France growing increasingly aggressive to Rome, the banner of the crescent star sweeps across Europe. Now, with the Hapsburg Empire devoid of wealth and prestige as the entirety of Germany has entered a state of turmoil, the Ottomans sack the city of Vienna. Though they decide against keeping the poorly defended city, Hungary is under their unquestioned control.
  • England sucks idk what they’re doing
  • In the aftermath of the pandemic, the Iberians only retain nominal control over much of the New World, abandoning them in a matter similar to Hispanola IOTL. In the Caribbean, Spaniards, Taino, and slaves begin to live communally, establishing new societies based on sustenance farming rather than cash-crop plantations and largely ignoring colonial trade monopolies.
  • In the absence of colonial oversight, the quilombos in Brazil begin to establish powerful kingdoms of their own across the Amazon, expanding across the coast. Native puppet kingdoms in New Spain begin to break off from Iberian rule as the Purépecha Empire reasserts its autonomy and control over western Mexico. Meanwhile, the Inca Empire has re-established itself in the Viceroyalty of Peru under the rule of Pedro Bohorquez, a Jesuit-educated explorer of Moorish origin who claims to be a descendant of the great Tupac Amaru.
  • Though Europe is eventually able to recover and begin to re-assert its control over the parts of the Americas, settler colonialism is practiced far more rarely. To gain access to colonial markets, France begins funding now-autonomous Indian and mestizo states with guns and gold to cripple the Iberian Empire. As both the Old World and the New recover from this apocalyptic era of pestilence and disease, a new future emerges.
This is mostly Peter's idea
