France keeps Gabon

Gabon didn't really want independence. Léon M'ba actually asked De Gaulle to make Gabon an overseas department but he refused. What if he had accepted? Gabon has a rather small population and a lot of oil, which allowed it to be one of Africa's most developed countries. It wouldn't be too much of a burden for France. The problem I see is that it would become a major attraction for illegal immigration, even more so than Mayotte because it's not an island. In addition, the Organisation of African Unity wouldn't like it though if most Gabonese are in favor, they couldn't plausibly point out to self-determination.

French Guiana has become a major destination for migrants from neighbours, like Brazil and Surinam, but the volume of the migration is limited and the French are able to keep French Guiana for being a transit point to the metropole.

Gabon has a somewhat similar geography, with the population centres being surrounded by dense nigh impassable rainforest and with neighbouring Congo-Brazzaville being as relatively underpopulated as Brazilian Amapa is. There may be more immigrants using Gabon, but not many more. IMHO.
