Apparently, Abraham Ribicoff was offered the position, but he declined it "because he felt it wouldn't be proper for a Catholic and a Jew to try to put Negros in white schools in the south."

Perhaps RFK takes the seat that Teddy took IOTL, which could have some interesting effects on the latter. After serving as the head of western outreach for his brother's campaign, EMK was hoping to move to New Mexico, California, or Wyoming with his family. IOTL his father kept him back in Massachusetts, but perhaps he's less insistent with the senate seat staying in the family without him.

Interestingly enough, Mike Gravel, not foreseeing a successful career in his birth state of Massachusetts decided to move west; he chose Alaska over New Mexico because he didn't enjoy the hot weather. Could have some interesting ramifications on Alaskan statehood and Gravel's own career; maybe NM ends up with two left-wing senators born out east leading their delegation!

Abraham Ribicoff or Arthur Goldberg are possible choices, but with the whole "Catholic and a Jew" thing, how about Morris Udall for some weird reason.
