Boxing is unique (and not in a good way) in that it doesn't have a single dominant FIFA esque governing body, instead having several rival "alphabet " ones.

Is there a credible way to have it be ruled by one accepted group like almost every other sport, including combat sports?

That feels like the real question is how boxing is the outlier.

See here for the best short history I can get.

There's also the issue in that there are arguably too many boxers to make a good classification without having to resort to arbitrary decisions (and the power to arrange title matches was one of the things that gave mobsters control over the sport in the bad old days).

What it sounds like from that is your problem is the NBA taking forty years to become the WBA, by which point it's already US-dominated, while groups like FIFA started out as multinational. You'll need that changed earlier; forty years in, reform is a mess and you can't have another body become THE boxing authority because the WBA won't want to go anywhere.

Alternatively, you need to have the International Boxing Union do better so it can eventually absorb the NBA.

The only other even vaguely "major" sport which has a split is Darts.

Depends how you look at it, tbf.

Like given how often you get dual code players in Rugby, you could argue that's one sport with two governing bodies.

And Chess had a darts like split for years before reunification.
