German Intervention in the Russo Japanese War

The two alliances being Germany, Russia against France and Britain is interesting. Wonder if that’d lead Austria to seek help from France and Britain and as a result Italy has both possible irredentism targets united against them.

    Alternate History General Discussion

There’s something very British Empire about the fact that they could’ve maintained some of the empire by absorbing the parts that wanted through integration into parliament, but racism and fiscal anxiety meant they’d rather just let it disintegrate.

    Alternate History General Discussion

I heard that one of the reasons Britain refused to annex Malta amongst several was that they didn’t want to set the potential precedent that all colonies could be incorporated into the UK. What potential colonies would’ve wanted this?

WI: Immediate Effects of Soviet Europe After WW2?

Actually, this brings up a good point. By the time the Soviets had effectively conquered all of Germany, France could possibly liberate itself. Not sure on that, someone with more knowledge on the French resistance may need to correct me, but that might lead to the Maquis or other groups...

WI: Immediate Effects of Soviet Europe After WW2?

But would the Soviets be willing to let that happen? They tended to react rather aggressively to different styles of Communism or reforms to the systems they had in place as we saw with Tito as well as the unrest events within the Warsaw pact. The question would be whether they'd be willing to...

The Tom Wintringham Thread, or 'What to do with "England's Last Revolutionary"?'

Common Wealth might have potential, the problem is that Attlee is pretty popular. Don't see how a left of labour party can really succeed if I'm being honest in the climate established after WW2. Eventually its just not going to survive. Maybe if Labour was more pluralistic we could see him...

The Tom Wintringham Thread, or 'What to do with "England's Last Revolutionary"?'

I don't know how common it is to have a thread on just one person, but I find Tom Wintringham fascinating. In the book 'Tom Wintringham: The Last English Revolutionary', written by Hugh Purcell and Phyll Smith, he's quoted as saying: "Spain woke me up politically. I rediscovered democracy, the...

WI: Immediate Effects of Soviet Europe After WW2?

Would be fascinating if we ended up with basically Vichy France give or take some territory as the WAllies government due to more resources being put into Dragoon, while the north/formerly German occupied section becomes a Soviet aligned state. I know 'immediate effects' are the main focus here...

Edward VIII remaining King and its potential effects on World War Two and British Politics

On the other thread we had a discussion on a 1940 ceasefire. That could sort of bring about what I guess I mean, without it being a permanent peace.

Edward VIII remaining King and its potential effects on World War Two and British Politics

I guess my point is that if he tried to intervene and go 'Hey, can we maybe do that negotiation for peace to preserve the empire?' during the May crisis. I know its a bit unrealistic I just find the idea of it happening fascinating.

Edward VIII remaining King and its potential effects on World War Two and British Politics

But wasn't he more willing to express his views and support than the other royals? Even to the detriment of the institution as a whole?

Edward VIII remaining King and its potential effects on World War Two and British Politics

Now, this is a bit of a weird one. I'm not particularly attached to what the reason would be to keep him in power, whether that's him not marrying Simpson, or whatever would make sense. I'm curious as to the effect that, if Edward VIII had stayed as monarch, what happens if World War Two and...

I'm having tremendous trouble responding to threads

I'm now able to type, but that might be because I changed to my laptop for work, still a bit laggy but it now lets me post. Good sign.

I'm having tremendous trouble responding to threads

Already told Gary, but I’m suffering a similar issue. Post something, three loading bars appear, fails to send, but works if with a bit of lag on phone.

    Franco assassinated in 1948

Spanish anarchists never get a timeline when they do well. Bless them. I believe this time is long after they got executed/fled to France.

    Franco assassinated in 1948

Don’t know how realistic it is, but the US had at least some ideas on intervening in Spain to get a more pro-US regime. If fears over socialists or communists taking power is there then maybe we’d see a coup of some sort?

How could you ensure a successful USSR?

I know it’s cheating but just swap in whatever the left SR’s would do, even if that means something that isn’t the USSR in the way we know it. Technically a successful post-Russian empire socialist state.

What if RFK wasn't assassinated in 1968?

Don't have much to say beyond the title. He was hugely popular, and was easily one of the frontrunners, if not the frontrunner. Do you think he'd have won the primary? What about the actual election? What would his platform be if he won? There's a lot of good questions here and I hope people...

The United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and Malta?

Dom Mintoff of the Maltese Labour Party proposed Maltese integration into the United Kingdom, in which they would gain three seats in Parliament and roughly have a similar position as Northern Ireland with its own local parties. The referendum to join Britain, while boycotted by some, had 77% in...

The Hammer and Sickle with the Stars.

Looking back at this scenario, unfortunately while its not realistic, my brain's imagining a glorious or optimistic future with a UN space mission. Something about the idea of the project being expanded into a UN Permanent Security Council mission, with five astronauts/cosmonauts one from each...
